  1. It was something I thought I remembered reading from somewhere. I know nothing about adding o2 to aquariums but know that, as with everything, balance is the key. I wondered whether there was more oxygen at the top levels than the bottom. Besides which, when you said o2 I was thinking CO2 being added for the plants. Probably totally off the track  Having the kuhlis in the top of the plants is one thing, having them there as they appear stressed is another
  2. It depends on where you get your water from and what gets added to it. I use water straight out of the tap as we don't have chlorine in our supply.

There are so many to choose from it really is a matter of adding a fish you like Tony. One question though, why is the temperature so high? It only needs to be around 24C. Mine is actually 22.5. With a tank that size (and it sounds good, do you have pics?) I would go for medium sized fishes like gouramis or cichlids like keyholes or similar. A massive shoal of large barbs, like the golden ones, would look good too.
  4. That is certainly an interesting site with all you need to know. I have accessed it before.
  5. Guppies will tolerate cooler temperatures, not cold. In a well insulated house where the room temperature does not drop below about 16C they will survive.
  6. Welcome to the fishroom mothertrout. We are all addicts here! Don't hesitate to ask questions and never assume your question is stupid. Perhaps we will see you in the chat room some time?
  7. Hi there! Does that make you de myster?
  8. There seems to be differing opinions as to whether to keep the lead on the plants or not. Personally I remove it when possible. It can restirct some plants, depending on how they grow.
  9. Not a requirement for the fish. It is only to make the tank look nicer and hide the cords from the heaterstat etc. It can also look a little odd depending on the wallpaper behind it . Having fish swimming past giant sunflowers can be disconcerting
  10. I think you will find most of them should survive - depending on what else is in the tank. They are looked after very well by the dad and are bigger than most other fry.
  11. Welcome Myst. My husband and I were very good at killing guppies.
  12. Welcome myst. A female guppy can produce a new batch of fry every 3 or 4 weeks. Often, when they are close to giving birth, you can see the black eyes of the fry through her belly but I don't know about any black spot. They are usually very fat just before birth.
  13. Higher order plants are the ones you recognise as plants - they have stems and leaves. Algae is a plant, but it is a lower order plant. Oops sorry mgilchrist but I did not see your last post
  14. A well planted tank with lots of fine leaved plants lie sprite and Java moss will give the fry plenty of hiding places without having to separate them.

    Electric Yellows

I haven't anything to add to Paul's suggestions. I have a Malawi set-up with 6 EYs and they all get on well with occasional chasing by the dominant fish but he gives up quickly with no damage done. The other fishes also have plenty of places to hide.

    A Prowler from OZ

Hi jelte and welcome. Cees might have a point as you do not mention how many plants you have with the fish. Although fish keeping has got more technical over the years, it is not a great requirement when keeping fish. I always like to use the KISS principle - Keep It Simple Stupid! It works for me (and I do not need anyone making any remarks like - well they don't come much more simple than Caryl - either).

Good to hear from you Greg. I am in Blenheim so you will be just over the hill if you settle in Nelson. There is no club in Nelson at the moment but you could always start one yourself or join ours. There are 3 shops in Nelson and the stock varies. A trip to Christchurch would set you right! There are a number of discus keepers here and I am sure they will be willing to give help and advice when you are ready to set up.
  18. Depends on the type of filter. I clean out mine (external canisters) when the water flow slows down. I never bother using charcoal myself.
  19. Perhaps a ziptie around the jurapari's mouth? I think Warren is right, remove either fish or plants.
  20. I pulled my Eheim wet/dry 2227 or 2229 (can't remember which) apart the other day as it wasn't running properly. Turns out we had a pipe in upsidedown and it was sheer luck it had kept going as long as it had before it blocked. Anyway, I was surprised at how little buildup was in it and it has been running since the beginning of April. Pulling it apart was so simple compared to the Fluval 404 - which is supposed to be easy but isn't.
  21. Good name for him  I have not kept them myself but someone in Dunedin had one a few years ago and it is the only one I have seen (I seem to remember I only got to see part of that one too). I understand they are very timid and shy during the day, especially when in new surroundings.
  22. Nobody mentioned they were virtual fish! If that is what was meant then it is false advertising!
  23. Now look what you've done pies! Everyone wants marines
  24. @ Ira. Actually, it is finding the space in the house that is the problem.
  25. I have both Eheims and Fluvals. For ease of use and cleaning the Eheim beats the Fluval 404 hands down. Sorry I have no experience with other brands of external canister filters but I know they are a lot cheaper than those two mentioned.
