  1. I hope you had enough left over to pay club subs!
  2. We tried a portable chiller we converted to run on mains power but they don't like to run non-stop
  3. I recognise a fellow Belgariad fan too, don't like his latest efforts though. Welcome to the fishroom polgara
  4. I am sure we could Brian - if we had a basement. They might be used to variable temps but our room sits at a steady 28 or more during the day and drops to 18 overnight at the least. The critters did not cope.
  5. Back in Sept last year. Rene was selling his fully transportable fishroom. It was a... "20ft insulated container ,wired up , 33x90litre tanks on metal stands (3 tanks high) each tanks has own floro light , gravel, back drop, under gravel filter. The air supply is via 2 commercial pumps through a central supply system. 5 other tanks of varying sizes included as are all fish plants accessories etc." It was a converted shipping container. Rene lived in Richmond at the time, so local to you. I think he might have been asking $5,000 from memory but I may be wrong there.
  6. How many and what size? Polystyrene boxes are the way to go.
  7. Too expensive to live in Nelson now - look at your real estate prices!!!
  8. Used to be a club in Nelson but it has been in recess some time now. One of our club members is in Motueka.
  9. Now you will be a cichlidiot as well
  10. http://www.wetpetz.com/keyhole.html Try this site.
  11. Congratulations Sue! Here is what my book has to say... Incubation 5 days Feed fry 1st week newly hatched brineshrimp 2nd week sifted zooplankton (which I think is anything live that's small like microworms) from 3rd week chopped tubifex worms (I would use white worms but not sure if I would chop them) Peaceful timid fish (except when breeding it seems!). They spawn on flat stones and the female deposits up to 400 eggs. The fish are monogamous and tend their fry for a long time. As soon as the fry are 1cm long they may be removed to a separate tank. If generously fed live foods their growth is rapid. Sudden fright causes the fish to change colour. Anyone here bred them and able to give first hand knowledge?
  12. we tried it but it did not work

    SEA Chest!

We don't mind you mentioning it. Anything that helps fishkeepers is OK with us! A big pile of sand under the chest would raise the height and add authenticity
  14. I want to set up my cold marine again Brian!! Can't though as it gets too hot here. Good site, good pics, thanks for sharing.

    SEA Chest!

Looking good chrisMack! Love the look of the seachest but would be concerned about its height (or lack of height) for viewing. Did you build the chest yourself or convert an already made one? Good luck with the site and I hope others add their input. Nicely set out and easy on the eye. Keep up the good work.

    ATTN Caryl!

Yes I did know they go dormant, Organism give you helpful care sheets when they sell you the plant. This was well beyond dormant though. Oh 'binata' I misread the writing, the N looks like a U.
  17. Yes, it will have eaten it once it was dead but it would not have killed it in the first place.

Had to replace the Venus Fly Trap Andrew. Didn't notice when visiting boys force-fed sprayed flies to the last plant The other is a Sundew, Drosera biuata. A pretty plant I hadn't seen before.
  19. Good luck with the tank Pauly and I for one would love to see you start a club in Tauranga - and affiliate to the FNZAS If I can be of any assistance don't hesitate to ask. I specialise in designing posters, leaflets etc. and am happy to print advertising posters and stuff for you if required.
  20. You will find they are also called bubble curtains.
  21. Well I am sure some of these people know more about glass thickness than I do as they make their own tanks but my list of recommended glass thicknesses says 120 x 45 x 30cm = 6mm 120 x 60 x 30 = 10mm Both my 120 tanks are made of 10mm glass and are also braced. Pegasus has made his own tanks for years so I am sure if he says 6mm is adequate then he will be correct.

That was us, British racing green MX5 with "Fix A PC" plates!! I wish you had introduced yourself! I vaguely remember someone was in Organism's but didn't take much notice and didn't realise you were also at Redwoods. I was the taller of the 2 in the MX5 (the other vertically challenged one was goldie, whose posts you may have read here also) with black jeans, black and grey striped top with black vest. My husband Grant was the bearded guy who was forced to drive goldie's car so she could get her MX5 thrill (since her husband sold hers). I loved the polypteruses and had not seen them before. Little was spent as, unlike some, I have self-control . I am also a scrooge. I bought a couple of carniverous plants at Organism and some vallis for another of our members. Didn't get any fish though I was tempted by several at Organisms and the polyteruses at Redwoods. Don't be shy next time and say hello!
  23. Welcome ChrisMack. You certainly do have some interesting 'different' fish there. Nice to see more people keeping something a little out of the ordinary.
  24. What do you call cheap? Check Trademe or Buy Sell and Exchange magazines. I got my last tank that size for $80 about 6 years ago - secondhand. Make sure the glass is all at least 10mm
  25. Get a piece of card, or a book, about 12cm long. Wind some wool (dark colours are best I believe) round and round it about 20 times (depending on how big you want your mop), Get another piece of wool about 10cm long and thread this under the wound wool at one end and tie it in a knot so all the lengths are bound together. Cut the threads at the opposite end you tied them and there is your mop. Tie a piece of polystyrene above the mop to keep it floating. The wool will take a wee while to saturate with enough water to make it sink properly. Dunk it up and down a few times and squeeze it to get the air out of it. It will eventually hang down nice and fluffy ready for your fish to spawn in it.
