  1. Thanks pies, I should have remembered all those filters on that tank! So true. I think we will use the filter since it is already here and ready to go so he doesn't have to wait for one to be ordered in.
  2. Well done MA! (and danios too)
  3. Thanks Ira. Filter has a spray bar so shouldn't be too bad. Any other opinions so I can go with the majority?
  4. Ha obviously you can never trust the Irish!
  5. Do you have a pic? What colour was he before? Sometimes fish will change colour and darken due to stress. They may also change colour slightly in response to their surroundings (camouflage). You don't have a multicoloured castle in there with him do you?
  6. He has been getting help Kim don't worry. Hope it went well Brian. Let us know!

    HI THERE

Hi luvguppies and welcome to the site. Lots of help and information here. Squished tail disease? Sounds like they may have clamped fins due to stress and/or poor water conditions. Do you have any test kits to check the water quality?
  8. How many times per hour is the water supposed to circulate through the filters ideally in a tropical tank? I know of 2 tanks, 1 is 104L (and quite tall) and the other 145L (standard 3ft). I have a filter here rated at 1000L per hour. Is this too much for either of these tanks, or not enough? I know you can never have too much filtration but I don't want the fish to die of exhaustion fighting the current either :-? I know the current can be turned down but this put extra srain on the filter motor. A quick response would be appreciated as the man involved is keen to go out and buy buy buy - and not necessarily appropriately. He just spent $700 on the 104L tank and stand.
  9. Another vote for mollies here with no connection to the eggs which would have been eaten.
  10. It would only work short term then the pH would rise again (I seem to remember reading that somewhere) - often too rapidly for the fish.
  11. Have you added water from the new house taps? Have you checked the water supply? Perhaps it has old rusting copper pipes?
  12. Well Imust admit my Fluval 404's have been annoying me. I recently purchased a Jebo 819 but have not had it long enough (1 week) to give it a fair evaluation but so far it is very good and quiet. I have to touch it to feel the vibration to make sure it is actually running! Many people swear by Eheims. Just avoid their wet/dry filters. Eheims are a lot dearer than others.
  13. Christchurch - Organism. Corner Ilam and Cyde. You might also find Redwoods, Petworld and the 2 Critter Kingsdoms of interest.
  14. One should not start dosing tanks with medications until one finds out what the problem is.

    Auckland Water

Ring your local council. They should be able to give you a printout with more information than you ever wanted to know!
  16. Finely crush some food when you feed the rest of the inhabitants and they will find it. I know they need to be a reasonable size before being moved (or sold to lfs) but I am at work with no access to information and can't remember how big. 3cm at least I think.
  17. It does root well in substrate bt also forms thick masses on the surface with long trailing thin roots hanging a long way, making it idea for fry to hide in. These floating clumps can be easily broken off then planted elsewhere if desired and take off quickly as they already have a good root system.
  18. Sharks need lots of swimming space so the longer the tank the better so they have room to cruise. A 6ft sounds good to me (for a start  ) I would be more inclined to use external canister filters rather than the AquaClears on larger tanks though. I have an AquaClear 500 running on my 4ft tank but it is usually supported by a Shark internal or another external canister filter like a Fluval 404 or, more recently, a Jebo 819.

    New AR-510

What size is an AR-510? Looking forward to pics. Nice to have a delayed payday save you from overstocking!
  20. Hi Hilary and welcome to the fishroom. I would have thought Aussie and kiwi humour to be similar enough for you not to miss it  Your tanks seem very heavily stocked to me. I hope you do regular water changes and have plenty of filtration. As to a new tank - always get the biggest you have room for and can afford (and the floor can support). You can never have too much tank!! Keep an eye on the larger shark and make sure he doesn't bully the smaller ones. That 6 litre tank would make a good hospital/quarantine tank when required. Quite a few of us are in the chat room every night from 8.30 - 9pm our time so pop in and say Hi sometime 8)
  21. Ceratoptersi thalictroides is also known as water sprite or Indian fern. Often confused with Hygrophila difformis aka water wisteria. Ceratopteris pteroides is also known as Indian fern. All are good as planted or floating plants.
  22. Water sprite floats well. One of our members has it in with her silver dollars as she has found they won't eat it!
  23. Well we had a great fun competition held over 2 weekends. The first weekend we travelled south to Ashburton as we have several members there and they wanted to enter their tanks. Since they entered 18 tanks and 1 pond it was worth driving down This weekend we held the Blenheim end of the competition with a further 10 tanks and 3 ponds - making a total of 28 tanks and 4 ponds! If you go to http://photobucket.com/albums/v490/Marl ... on%202005/ you will see the winners being presented with their rosettes, certificates, fish and/or trophies. You will also see 14 sub albums as tanks are split into household groups. Several of the entrants had never attended a tank and pond competition, let alone entered one so well done to you all! It was also good to have some visitors. Linda from CAPS was able to join us at the Ashburton end as was Eddie (who is also a member of our club) who managed to come up to Blenheim as well. We had a further 2 people interested in joining the club who joined us at the Blenheim end. We all had a great time and ended both weekends with a friendly BBQ.
  24. Thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions. I think it most likely they are diving beetle larvae as there are quite a few of these in the ponds. I fished a few out today and will scopp out more. Can't have them eating all my daphnia! Not to mention the barb fry
  25. For only 2 goldfish the tank is a reasonable size. The problem with ugf's is that goldfish like to nosey through the gravel and sometimes dig through it, disturbing the substrate the plates are under. I find them not enough on their own to handle the mess goldfish make. An air pump would probably make less noise than the AquaClears, unless you can fill the tank high enough to reach the overflow lip on the filter, or you will have the constant sound of falling water. AquaClears are good though and easy to clean and maintain. You might have to rinse the sponges every 3 or 4 days but this is easy to do. Internal canisters tend to block up too quickly as the fish grow so you might consider an external canister filter. These are very quiet.
