  1. Hi Candela and welcome to NZ I don't think you are the first Malaysian we have had in here but don't let that worry you. We have rain forests here with lots of moss. A big money earner on the west coast of the South Island is the gathering and drying of sphagnum moss.
  2. One of my African cichlids is missing all its tail too. Am keeping an eye on the fish but he seems to be able to swim and is eating.
  3. The barbs are partial to some plants too plus the plec will uproot them and destroy delicate plants

    Algae Problem

Yes, how many plants have you got in there?
  5. They fit on the dual taps - the ones where the hot and cold come out the same slim bit. They do not fit all taps. My tap has an end that unsrews so I can put different ends on it to adjust the way the water comes out so I just unscrew that bit and screw the python on instead.
  6. There are 2 Critter Kingdoms. One is in 213 Blenheim Rd and the other 250 Stanmore Rd.

    sick betta??

I assume you have done water tests? Some fish are more sensitive to water conditions than others so one may look unhappy while others appear fine.
  8. Mistymu would be able to tell you and I know she has been breeding them. I have seen them for sale in most of the ChCh shops.
  9. You would be hard pressed to find any specific guppies in NZ as they are bred for quantity, not quality. There are a few line breeders about though if you can find them. Most guppy types here refer to tail shape, not colour, although 'snakeskin' is commonly recognised. People selling them seem to think they can get a better price if their guppy has a specific name like 'red snakeskin veiltail' etc

    Hi from Holland

Hi Douwe and welcome to NZ  We have quite a few Dutch in NZ as many came over after the war. Marcel (scalare in here) is Dutch and lives in Christchurch (and, of course, our webmaster Cees is Dutch also) You are going to be disappointed I think in the fish and plants available here compared to what you are used to but hopefully the friendliness of the people will more than make up for it I would love some P denisonii but the price is beyond me at the moment
  11. Hi Lynda and welcome to the fishroom. By the way, joining this board does not make you a member of the FNZAS, it just gives you access to us . To belong to the FNZAS you must join an affiliated club. Unfortunately, the Levin club went in to recess a few years ago but I assure you there are fellow fishkeepers there! Nothing to stop you joining any of the other affiliated clubs though. Click on the FNZAS logo at the top of the page then look for the CLUBS link. As misnomer said, a bit more information about your tank would help. How many fish are in it? What sort? What sort of plants do you have? What is the tank pH? What is the tap water pH too for that matter? What happens to the plants when you add them to the tank? The answers to these will help us to help you. You can also join us in the chat room most evenings around 9pm.
  12. Ain't love grand? I can see you getting lost more often
  13. I always have an extra internal filter sitting in one of my main tanks so if I have to set up another tank in a hurry, for whatever reason, I already have a fully mature filter.
  14. Too many fish too quickly. A tank can't cycle in one day. How did you set the 2nd tank up? If you used half the media from the 1st tank's filter and put it into the 2nd tank's filter it would be a big help. Do lots of water changes over the next few days. The poor guy has had a bit of a shock but will hopefully recover over a few days.

    1st killies

PM Alan or caserole. They both belong to the NZ Killifish Assoc.
  16. Very pretty penejane. Matt-Man, that fly spray beside you tank concerns me. NEVER spray flies anywhere near a tank, pump or filters unless you cover it well. I only spray flies at the other end of the room to the tank and mine has a glass lid plus another wooden one over that!.
  17. Whatever gave you the idea that everyone in the fishroom was an expert, or had access to one? We have a number who are extremely knowledgeable, pegasus and Alan the most so. We are all hobbyists wanting to make sure people keep their aquatic pets in the best possible conditions. Many of the points raised, although not pertinent to you, could help someone else in the future.
  18. Sorry I can't help as I have never kept these fish. About the only thing you can do is find a lab to disect it and see if there was something internally wrong.
  19. "Cold" is a relative term. Danios, and quite a few tropicals, can tolerate lower temperatures but are not true cold water fishes. Give the fantail time to settle in. Your son said he has seen him out and about so just make sure he is eating.
  20. You Invercargillites (Invercargillonians, Invercargilli?) must get a club going down there! Werner, if you can make it to the Dunedin parade then please do so. Look under the thread about it (under FNZAS Clubs) and ring one of those listed for details. If you want posters re a club printed etc let me know, am happy to help.
  21. If your house is a nicely insulated warm one you may get away without a heater. Danios are tropical fish (22 - 27C) and fancy goldfish (which most say shouldn't be mixed with tropicals) like slightly warm temps (18C). The danios may not be upsetting him at all and he is just getting used to new surroundings but if he is not used to other faster fish, it might be disconcerting. Just a thought. These fish will show their colours more with dark gravel. Fish camouflage themselves so they can't be seen by predators from above so try to blend in with what is below. Light gravel (white is for marines) makes them pale and washed out.
  22. Fancy goldfish spend a lot of time just sitting. Their odd shaped body and finnage make it harder to swim. The danios may also be upsetting with their speed. He will take time to settle too.

    changing tank

Mitch did I remember to send you copies of the pics I took of your tank? That link just takes me to the main page to sign up with the site, it doesn't show the pics.
  24. Letting the bigger one eat first is quite likely.
