  1. The guppies will cope with a wide range of pH, anything from around 6.8 - 7.6.
  2. Any good quality goldfish food and live foods I should think. Hopefully wok sees this as he breeds orandas too if I remember correctly so is sure to be able to help.
  3. Welcome Warick. As said, check out the saltwater section (and don't let them put you off ). The rest of us are always friendly
  4. If you gave some to Jude, Stu, she is visiting me on Friday and I am visiting Marty in a couple of weeks so could play courier. Have a spare tank to keep them in until then too.
  5. My apologies rnbo, I must start wearing my glasses when working at the computer
  6. Something will be there after 3 days - but enough? Depends on the fish load I guess. I assumed he meant the whole new filter was running on the existing tank.
  7. Check this thread out http://p069.ezboard.com/fthetropicaltan ... 1688.topic
  8. I like to give mine a couple of weeks to be sure. Would think 3 days wouldn't be long enough. Compromise and say 1 week 8)
  9. Very nice indeed. Love that central driftwood shape too.
  10. I am going to make one for Jude and Ian when they visit on Friday Don't waste it on the kids! For those Weight Watchers - one Banoffi Pie, as per wine biscuit recipe, is approx 94.5 points!!! (It might actually be less, like only 90, as I worked out the points using Girl Guide biscuits which are higher in points I imagine than wine biscuits.
  11. Personally I am not a fan of Siamese fighters in community tanks, I feel they do better in a species only tank but many people would disagree and have no problems with them in communities. Keep them with other slower moving fish. Guppies would be fine, so would the platies. Avoid gouramis as they tend to think fighters are other gouramis and can get aggressive. Cardinals would be ok too, as would the bristlenose. A Jack Dempsey would ruin everything! NOT a nice peaceful community fish!! What sort of filter is on your son's established tank? If it has removable media, use half of it to seed your tank (plus a few handfuls of gravel) or run your filter in your son's tank for 2 weeks and the cycling would be pretty much done. Then you could add the fish - still not too many at once mind you!
  12. But they still tend to dash in short bursts
  13. So how many (and who) went? Anyone take pics?
  14. The angel shape is tall and they are a still fish. Other fish are better in longer tanks as they zip about and need room to move, whereas angels serenely glide and will not bash their nose against the end panels due to lack of length.
  15. Bristlenoses are nocturnal so to have it stay inside the rock all day would not be unusual in itself. Assuming the holes are large enough for the fishes to fit through, it should be ok to leave there. Are you sure the angel and platy were stuck or perhaps they were unwell and drifted into the places you found them? What size is the tank (length, width and height) how long has it been set up and how many fish are in it?
  16. BANOFFI PIE 1 pkt wine biscuits (crushed) 120 grms melted butter 1 tin of Nestle Caramel Condensed Milk 2 bananas sliced 1-2 teaspoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon of Instant Coffee Powder 2 tablespoons plain yoghurt 200mls whipping cream Chopped Walnuts and Chocolate Chips/Hail Crush biscuits and add melted butter. Mix and place in a loose bottom pie plate and cook( 350F-180C) for 15-20 mins. Cool, then chill in fridge. Spread on Caramel Condensed Milk and then add sliced bananas. Whip together cream sugar and coffee powder and when cream is stiff - fold in yoghurt. Spread over bananas and smooth the top. Decorate with walnuts and chocolate. or, this is supposedly the original recipe... To serve 8-10 12 ounces uncooked shortcrust pastry 1.5 tins condensed milk (13.5 ounces each) 1.5 pounds firm bananas 375ml of double cream Half a teaspoon powdered instant coffee 1 dessertspoon caster sugar A little freshly ground coffee Preparation Preheat the oven to gas mark 5 (400F, ). Lightly grease a 10in x 1.5in flan tin. Line this with the pastry thinly rolled out. Prick the base all over with a fork and bake blind until crisp. Allow to cool. The secret of this delicious pudding lies in the condensed milk. Immerse the cans unopened in a deep panof boiling water. Cover and boil for 5 hours making sure that the pan does not boil dry * (see CAUTION) . Remove the tin from the water and allow to cool completely before opening. Inside you will find the soft toffee filling. Method Whip the cream with the instant coffee and sugar until thick and smooth. Now spread the toffee over the base of the flan. Peel and halve the bananas lenghtways and lay them on the toffee. Finally spoon or pipe on the cream and lightly sprinkle over the freshly ground coffee. *CAUTION It is absolutely vital to top up the pan of boiling water frequently during the cooking of the cans. 5 hours is a long time and if they are allowed to boil dry the cans will explode causing a grave risk to life, limb and kitchen ceilings. Hint - Banoffi is a marvellous "emergency" pudding once you have the toffee mixture in your store cupboard. We therefore suggest that you boil several cans at the same time as they keep unopened indefinitely
  17. OK it is a caramel like topping on a biscuit crust base. Has coffee and sliced bananas in it, hence the banoffee - as thought, banana and coffee. Served with whipped cream.
  18. The trouble with banoffee pie is it varies so much in taste from place to place. Some of it is delicious and others are just so-so
  19. It is recommended you get at least 6 discus then see if any pair up. If you have a pair then they would fit in it but IMHO they would not look their best in a tank that shape, it would not do them justice. Perhaps I am just biased as I am not a great fan of hex tanks :-?
  20. We try to keep it friendly and family suitable too. 8)

    Cutting Glass

Don't forget to always attempt to wash blood out of clothing and carpets with COLD water Hot water will set it and make it impossible to remove.
  22. You could not put discus in that tank it is not big enough. That pair of angels of yours would look good though I would suggest undergravel filter or external canister. The trouble with heater/filter combos is that if one part dies (and I gather they do) you have a problem with having to replace one or the other components. A heater would fit nicely in one of the back angles with long vallis planted in front to cover it. You can also put in a deep bed of gravel without it looking odd, due to the depth.
  23. The other gouramis get to 6 - 8cm. It is normal for some to do weekly water changes and good for the fish. How much and how often depends on stocking levels. Some people like to change 10% every week but others will do 20 - 25% every 2 weeks. I personally rarely do water changes but I have a very good filter and few fish. Those who do the regular water changes will have happier fish and they will breed often and regularly (the fish that is).
  24. Always check your insurance policy!!! We thought we were covered as we had specifically asked if the tank was covered in our house policy and they said it was. What they DIDN'T tell us was that the damage from a broken tank was NOT. They only covered damage from normal household water supplies (eg if a pipe had burst or sink overflowed). I tried to explain that tanks were a normal household water supply in our place (we had 18 of them) but they didn't listen
