  1. Went to measure mine then realised it is a 403
  2. They are more active at night but larger ones do seem to move around a lot more, perhaps they feel braver. As long as the little one is getting enough food I would not worry too much. It might help to buy some more though as corys are happier in groups.
  3. Poor fish. Not sure what more you can do for him
  4. Attention all club members! (of any sort of club). Now is the time to get a Community Post application from your local NZ Post. Applications must be in by September 2nd. This is a great way to save your club money on postage for newsletters. Applications will be considered from any non profit organisations or groups using postage to carry out their activities for the benefit of the community in their region. This includes activities that 1. contribute to community well being 2. promote education and learning 3. offer the community benefit and enjoyment. Fishkeeping offers all 3 of those! 8) Organisations must be 1. an incorporated society 2. a registered charitable trust or 3. a body or club that is controlled by an association of people under an adopted constitutiion and rules, with annual accounts and reports. Well, if your club isn't incorporated, it will at least fall under number 3. The form has an application sheet on the back and you have to describe (max 100 words) the project for which the postage included envelopes are required. (I suggest something along the following...) Our club promotes aquatic animal health and educates the public on the best way to care for their aquatic pets. We also help local council with pest weed identification and promote the destruction of classified noxious aquatic plants. They also ask; Who will benefit from this project? Club members and other members of the public who find out about us, local council and MAF When will the project occur? We have a monthly newsletter so the next 12 months What is the total cost of the project? Work out what a newsletter costs to be photocopied (eg 10c per side of A4 sheet) or printed plus postage How much has already been raised? We have an annual subscription of $X per person plus run the occasional raffle and/or sausage sizzle when required I actually got 100 envelopes on behalf of the FNZAS last year and our local radio ham club applies each year for their newsletters. Give it a go! You have nothing to lose except your postage costs!! :-?

    BROWN ALGAE

My Malawi tank is full of dark red/brown algae and green cyano so very colourful. No plants to compete with the algae. I just wipe it off the front glass and leave it everywhere else. The fish like to nibble on it and at least you know they have something to eat if you go away for a few days BTW my tank (280L) has 4 bright white fluoros.

    Hi everyone.

Guppy fry can eat crushed flake with no problems. Be careful with the egg yolk as it can foul the tank very quickly.
  7. I don't think they are that fussy mystic
  8. The latest Dunedin newsletter has an article from badmanstropicalfish.com called "The Great Salt Myth" - very interesting.

    new to this site

Hi and welcome bulldog. Perhaps you may consider joining one of the Wgtn clubs
  10. OK but I can get 2 female BNs to Dunedin so it shouldn't be too hard to get them to you from there if you want.
  11. Might be able to help penejane, am awaiting a reply from someone I think might have some females. I could bring them down to the Dunedin Tank Parade for you
  12. Don't use the house water supply if it is copper pipes in the house.
  13. Well done to those who are saving these creatures. I do wonder though how you tell if a turtle is 'slow'
  14. I get rata and rimu from the beach at Hokitika where it washes down from the river. I give it a good scrub with a nail brush or old toothbrush, for those small, hard to reach places then rinse well and add it to the tank. Never had a problem.
  15. Greywacke and basalt should be fine I think. It is limestone you need to watch out for as it leaches and alters the pH. Pour a little vinegar over the rock. If it fizzes, don't use it. Some white rocks are fine eg marble. It is times like this I really miss our late member June Goldsack, who was president of the local rock and mineral club. She was a mine (no pun intended) of information.
  16. Personally I prefer not to add any chemicals to my tank.
  17. How many fish (and what size) are in the current tank? If you put media from the established filter into the new one, you should be able to add the fish immediately. Remember, bacteria grow slowly in a filter to match the bioload of the tank. If you have a tank say, with 30 fish, and you then use that filter on a new tank with only 10 fish in it, of a similar size, some of the bacteria will die off. So, how much of the filter media you use from the established filter will depend on the bioload of the 2 tanks.
  18. It is normal, especially in the fancy goldfish.
  19. Just found this.. "The railway sleepers were kept away from the pond. On hot days tar deposits can seep out, and these are potentially harmful to fish and wildlife." from the website http://www.bestgardening.com/bgc/design ... deck01.htm
  20. I too would think the sleepers have tar and stuff on them but they are used to line ponds with aren't they? Or is that just on the outside and the sleepers themselves are not in contact with the pond water?

    cloudy water

Sounds like an algae bloom. Is it white cloudy? Won't harm the fish but looks unsightly. How long has the tank been set up? This is common in new set-ups and should disappear again after a week or two.
  22. and there was me thinking they bounced well if you tied a bit of string around them  Welcome to the fishroom Garry
  23. Also check out the Dunedin club's tank parade coming up. Check the details here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=7924 I will be attending all the way from Blenheim so you guys should have no difficulty getting there
