  1. I had a little space and thought you could do with others knowing about Pooks
  2. Of course having your fish pic on the cover and your wife's excellent article featured can't hurt either. I would like to add how easy this month's mag was to put together when so many finally heeded the call and sent articles, poems, tips etc. There were even a few left over for the November issue! Please keep the articles etc coming people as it is a never ending job. We want a magazine full of original articles that other groups ask permission to reprint.

    Glass lid

Any glazier should be able to help too, or second hand house parts dealers.
  4. You belong to Waikato don't you krib and your surname starts with E? If so, you are on the list so it can't be far away.
  5. Thanks guys. It has been pointed out that the first 3 members of Kapi-Mana got their details printed twice in the YB! This does not mean they are twice as important as anyone else in that club (or anywhere else for that matter)
  6. When I set up my Malawi tank I used 4 large goldfish to cycle it then removed them and added all the cichlids (very small) all at once.
  7. Perhaps a bit of the wood has started to rot or break away and that is why it has only started leaching recently. Sounds odd though. I don't think carbon can remove salt. It will dilute over time with water changes and top-ups. Do as misnomer suggests.
  8. Not entirely Liam. Koi used to be legal and were farmed. In times of floods, some farms were overrun with flood waters and the fish escaped that way. Farmers also have them in stock dams and the same thing happens.
  9. I collect it in containers outside in my yard, or stock troughs. If the water is good enough for the animals to drink it should be good enough for the fish!
  10. FINALLY!! They were posted this morning. The delay was due to the time it took for club officers to get their A's into G and send in the information, capitations and Year Book levies. In fact 2 clubs have yet to do so! Their members will not be getting any magazines until their club has paid in full. In case you are worried it is your club - I refer to Dunedin (who finally sent the caps but no levy) and Christchurch. Thank you to those who entered the poetry/limerick competition, your prizes are enclosed with your magazines.
  11. Some people are idiots - and we (all fish hobbyists) get the blame.
  12. The only gouramis I have had trouble with, aggression-wise, are the blues or 3 spot. I mentioned the congos to keep with the tetra theme

    KILLI PICS

They wouldn't stay beside the date! Besides, you would then claim they had died and I had frozen them and dropped them in just before taking the pic  Would I lie? Marty will know they are alive when he gets them on Friday (I hope they survive the trip!) My camera probably has a setting that puts the date on each pic but I would have to read the instruction manual.

    Scratching!

    Keep us informed caper
  15. Inter, you have too much time on your hands!
  16. Leopardfish are a cold water fish I like. Also, rosy barbs, golden barbs, torpedo barbs, guppies, platys, zebra and leopard danios all will tolerate cooler temperatures of 18 - 25C. This does NOT make them a cold water fish as some lfs seem to claim! The giant danios need tropical temps of at least 24C.
  17. Another thing that changes the 'inches per fish' formula is how much filtration you have and how regularly you do maintenance. With good filtration and a regular weekly, or fortnightly, water change you can have quite a few more fish (always adding numbers slowly of course). The electric yellows would love your neons and probably the glowlights as well! They are an African cichlid and their needs are totally different to those of your other fish. If you want them, set up another tank. The tiger barbs may be OK if you get 6 or more as they wil be busy keeping themselves in line so hassle other fish less. Kuhli loaches are cool but remember they are nocturnal and you may not see them too often. As for an alternative feature fish, have you thought about gouramis? Or perhaps a trio of congo tetras?
  18. I have Eheim, Fluval, AquaClear, Shark and Jebo. I gather the Jebao is a different one again but I have not seen one. My Eheim is a wet/dry and I would never touch another again - even with a 10 ft barge pole. I have a Fluval 403 and 404. OK but awkward to cleanout and flow rates drop dramatically very quickly. AquaClear is over 10 years and still using original parts (inc sponge). Love them but design means a gap in the lid which is a problem. Sharks are internal and work well. Easy to clean. The 2 Jebos have been running less than a year so I don't know about longevity but I love their performance so far. Very quiet.

    Scratching!

Symptoms of internal bugs (should have used the word bacteria rather than parasite I think) are a hollowing of the belly, red blood streaks under the surface, gills pale and eroded, loss of appetite, listlessness and a darkening of colour. Most common parasite is white spot of course. The fish will have rapid gill movement, flick and rub against objects, then break out in tiny white spots (so they look like they have been sprinkled with salt). External parasite symptoms include the flicking and rubbing, rapid gill movement and red, irritated areas of skin. I do not know a lot about fish diseases as, touch wood, I have not had any on my tanks for years. I have been looking at web sites for info

    Scratching!

I didn't mean internal I meant external parasites! Fish can carry small numbers of skin and gill parasites which don't cause a problem until the fish is stressed. See if you can find a med for external parasites.

    KILLI PICS

Here are some pics of the 4 fish heading down to Marty on Friday (just to prove they are still alive ). A bit pale in their bare tank with pale wallpaper and stuff but...

    Fish Food

Did you buy and breed the crickets or catch them from outside?

    Scratching!

If the ornaments were designed for aquarium use they should be fine. I don't know about the gel from the freezer packs but would wonder if internal parasites weren't causing the scratching.
  24. Caryl

    Oh NO!!

Both gills or just one side? If one side I would suspect damage from son chasing them again or fish scraping itself on a sharp rock or ornament etc. Goldfish are bot particularly fussy about pH
