  1. If you own a large chilly bin then use that. Be prepared for your fishes to lose all colour though! Don't panic, they will get it back once back in a tank.
  2. Western are affiliated and all is done for them. Rogan you didn't hold me up. I am waiting for Waikato and North Shore to pull finger. Devon you must belong to one of the affiliated clubs to be eligible for a YB. If you are no longer in NZKA (assuming you were before) then you will not get the magazines but, as said, you can subscribe to the AW but it is often cheaper to join a club.
  3. I thought I would get a faster response putting it that way Jude. Actually, I am unable to print a user name without express permission as it is against the rules. SO, any other FNZAS members who have not replied, or who I have not contacted, if YOU DO want your user name added to your Year Book details, please let me know as well ASAP. 8)

    Red Algae

Common plecs are tolerant of a wide range of pHs. Red/brush algae usually favours tanks with a high pH. What size is the tank, how long has it been set up, what other fish are in it and are just plecs dying? If so, how long have they been in the tank before death?
  5. Anyone else? I have yet to start printing as some clubs have still not sent their capitations and Year Book levy in to the FNZAS treasurer! Considering the cut-off date was July 20th, this leaves a lot to be desired. As a result, this year's Year Book and the August Aquarium World will be late as both get posted together.
  6. A table would need more bracing added to support the weight.
  7. Very nice puttputt. What better way to spend a rainly afternoon? 8)

    Surface scunge

Gently lie some paper towel on the surface then lift immediately. Repeat until scum has gone.
  9. Is it possible he has been constipated and it is just stuck poo? Is the fish looking healthy otherwise? Not lost weight? Weight loss may be a sign of internal parasites. If otherwise healthy I would wonder if it is just poo.
  10. If they are cut to the correct length (check the instructions) they should not move around much once in place. You want a little movement so you can wipe around them (algae on inside, drips etc on outside)
  11. And what a beautiful heater knob it is too  Looking good zev.
  12. Many fish rest on the bottom to 'sleep'. It can give you a fright if you go and look at the tank in the middle of the night!
  13. Tapeworms are smooth, not feathered, from what I can see from the pics in my disease book. I think they also live in the gut, not hang out the back. Sorry I don't know what it might be though
  14. The gap will not cause the tank stress (not sure about you though  )
  15. It is quite possible the guppies did not have active white spot at the store but were stressed on the way home. It is easy to blame the lfs when it isn't necessarily their fault at all. Note I said "active". White spot is always present (like the coldsore herpes virus on humans) but only breaks out when the fish is stressed or ill. You have treated it correctly. Sorry to hear about the cat. My mum's cat is often getting into fights and getting bitten. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in over the weekend and the cat will be walking better before Monday.
  16. They nibble algae on it but I don't think it is a required part of their diet as much as it is for the Ancistrus sp.
  17. Yes shiuh but it was added to with a further question 04 Aug 2006 which was then answered by Kei Anne
  18. Hard woods rot very slowly over many many years so not a problem in aquariums.
  19. Hi Doug. Congratulations on your new tank. The polystyrene needs to be about 2.5cm (that is what is under my tanks anyway) Depending on what the tank is going on, plywood may or may not be overkill. Putting stuff in the tank is not going to affect the glass, unless you drop a rock on it Good plants would be Java fern, moss and Anubias. Hygrophila is a fast grower too. Nothing wrong with the fish mix but tiger barbs tend to be nippy.

    Hey Everyone

I remember him mentioning a Helen too - and we suspected he was sharing the same Helen with wok in Auckland He assures us he isn't (as far as he knows anyway). Welcome.
  22. Yes. Mine actually stopped for several years and then started again. No idea why. Just make sure you have nice caves and driftwood and feed them well on a variety of foods.

    Garlic vs. Ich

I have always thought that at least if you fed garlic to your fish you would have the added benefit of keeping vampires away  (assuming you wanted to do this - no offence meant to Mystic vampyre )
