  1. Is it possible he damaged the eye, rather than it being an infection? If so, he may well come right.
  2. Interesting information here http://www.fishdoc.net/faq/faq_details.php?faqId=3412
  3. Sorry to hear that. Why are your nitrates so high?
  4. Perhaps he meant it had never been used by him
  5. Are you sure she hasn't dropped her fry? That would explain the vent change. Guppies can drop fry every 4 - 6 weeks like clockwork. They get bigger and the vent gets bigger and darker until they drop. They fry will get eaten very quickly in a community tank unless there is plenty of plant for a few of them to hide in. Poo colour will change depending on diet. Afraid the pic is too fuzzy to be of help.
  6. I don't know about the legalities but most tanks would just be too small for the type of rays we have here I think.
  7. Please get him to take the shark back. Your tank is way too small for him.

    newbie here

Welcome Shane. We have one or two other Dunedinites in here too. I hope you join the Dunedin Aquarium Club.
  9. Small Java ferns float, or drift about in the current until they get sucked up the intake, and block, the filter
  10. Nothing wrong with no filters and bubbles as long as you do regular water changes and tank maintenance
  11. People spawning egglayers do so in bare tanks with grids for the eggs to fall through or these plastic plant mats on the bottom of the tank. I think I remember someone saying they were sometimes available in the $2 Shop or similar.
  12. Difficult for us to help as different filters are found in different countries, sometimes woith different names. Are you looking for an internal or external filter? Not heard of the one you mention.
  13. If people praise the good shops regularly others will soon work out which are the bad ones without their names being mentioned at all and lawsuits avoided

    Hi!!

Sorry. Clubs have had AGMs and Maurice is no longer president. I will PM a name and number for you.
  15. Betta Living? Sounds more interesting than Shortland St.
  16. A nice well insulated house and they should cope. 15C is a bit low for my liking (and the guppies ). I think 18C as minimum is better for them, although obviously they can cope with lower.

    Fish dead help

Hi bigdaddy. That was a lot of fish to put in a tank newly set up. I gather you did not "cycle" it first? I believe a 29gal US is 36" x 12" x 18". If it has only been going 8 weeks it should have started off with just the 6 zebra danios and perhaps, at the start of the second month you could have added the 5 other danios. No more fish than that until the filters had built up the good bacteria required. Please read this link about cycling... http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/cycling.htm Bala sharks grow up to 14" and your tank is much too small for one, let alone 4. Please take them back to the shop. Juveniles can be raised in a 4ft tank but, to thrive, a 6ft plus is necessary. Keep checking the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels and do water changes whenever they are higher than they should be. Although levels may be good now, as a result of the fish deaths so stocking level has dropped enough for the filter to cope, the fish may have been damaged due to the high readings and just taken a little longer to die than the others.
  18. OK, an article in the Aug AW magazine stated that ramshorn snails eat plants and apple snails don't. I have had someone email to say that is wrong and ramshorns don't eat plants but apple snails do. It was my understanding that there are yellow and brown apple snails. One colour eats plants and the other doesn't but I can't remember which way around it is. Anyone with experience of either of these snails have anything to offer? Agree or disagree? I can add replies to the next mag.
  19. A good diverse number of tanks there. Thanks for sharing.
  20. I think hornwort is on the banned list with a big fine if you are caught with it. It is a Ceratophyllum sp and some, like C demersum (coontail) are banned I know. Floating options: Lemna minor - duckweed Ceratopteris thalictroides - water sprite Ceratopteris pteroides - Indian fern Riccia fluitans - Riccia Azollia filiculoides - rubra Microsorium pteroides - Java fern
  21. Now I feel old cos both my kids are over 21 (and I was under it when I had at least 1 of them) I remember I spent my 21st at home with a screaming 3 month old and wondering what on earth I had got myself into. I still haven't found the answer but at least both kids have left home (and don't scream so much) so I can ponder in peace

    poorly fish

Treat the infections with appropriate meds (these vary from country to country) and hopefully the swim bladder problem will right itself in the process. They will be very stressed out, even though they are now in better accommodation. Good on International Fish Rescue for helping them!
  23. I think the crays would eat the others but I haven't kept them so can't be sure. Whitebait will eat flake food. Haven't kept eels either but I think they need fast flowing water and are not suitable for tanks.
