  1. Use 2 nets. Be careful moving pregnant fish as they may abort.
  2. For those who thought their marine tanks used a lot of power, we just visited a small fruit processing factory today. Their power bill last month was $52,000 (usually "only" $45,000)
  3. They get along fine at the moment you mean. Goldfish, unless they are the fancy variety, are better off in cold water (they will live longer) or better yet - a pond. They are very messy and need a lot more space than tropicals. A 4ft tank for 2 large goldfish is not understocked. What size is your tank Kyle?
  4. Keep all critters out of it for more than 2 weeks. The whitespot will die without a host.
  5. Oh you have a dog! I thought the doghouse was for you!!
  6. Please make contact with the Waikato Aquarium Club and get a member there to help you (several are regularly in here like Dave or HandS). Your tank must cycle and you have already added too many fish, plus unsuitable ones. Take the sharks, at least, back to the shop and preferably the fighter as well. If the angels are small enough they might make it but I have concerns.
  7. Perhaps he just needs to grow a bit more Loopy.

    Gravel-Aragonite?

If you belong to the Dunedin club, ask Gordon what substrate he uses in his Malawi tanks.
  9. Polystyrene can make a big difference. One of my tanks is enclosed on 3 sides by solid wood and the other is exposed all sides except the back. The enclosed one keeps a much more even heat.
  10. What? The washing machine or sock fish?
  11. It is well done but would it make you go out and buy that particular washing machine?
  12. Chimera make sure your dog house is big enough for you to turn around in
  13. Based on freshwater only, at a temperature of 22˚C, total consumption for a small tank (38L) is about 150kWh a year. A medium tank (114L) 150 - 200 kWh per year and a large aquarium (208L) 200 - 400kWh per year. This is using basic equipment only and merely an average to give you an idea. Exact usage requires an ampmeter, which measures actual energy used and not the energy based on the max output, as some equipment does not run full time (eg heater). watts/1000 x hours x kWh cost x 30 = 30 days cost of aquarium
  14. Welcome Will. If you are going marine it would be best to direct any questions etc to those in the saltwater section as most of the salties don't read the rest of the site.

    Tonic salt

Iodine is not the free flowing agent added. They are separate. Did you know Roman soldiers were paid in salt? That is where we get the term "Worth his salt." The word "salary" comes from it too. Rock salt is mined from the ground, unlike our table salt (from Garssmere) which is harvested after evaporation.
  16. A divider is a good idea. It is just that a lot of fish seem to panic in the confines of a breeder, whether it be plastic or mesh.
  17. They do form a gravid spot. The fry will eat crushed flake. Many livebearers do not like being put in a breeding trap and will often abort of moved into one. They are better off in a small tank with lots of plants. As to when the fry go into the main tank - when they are big enough not to fit in the mouths of the other fish Peas are good for constipation. Cooked and with the shell removed. They will go mushy when put in the water.
  18. The reason they don't grow as large is because the small aquariums stunt their growth and this is not fair on any animal. A number of fish are friendly when young but get more aggressive as they age.
  19. Could be both but most likely constipated. When pregnant, they get fatter at a steady rate (like humans), they don't suddenly double in size overnight (although I am sure I did with my second ).

Bet he was hoping you drove the beer wagon with the Clydesdales!
  23. No such thing as too much filtration but there can be too much water movement and current depending on the type of fish.
