  1. Very simple. The males have long bristles around the mouth and up the middle of their head. The females have short bristles around the mouth.
  2. Those little red ones are all over the place down the Kaikoura coast. They don't get much bigger and won't cope with water constantly over 16C.

    Disaster

Not sure that brand has anything to do with it. There will always be a dud product, even in the best of them. Just one of those things. It should be covered warranty though so you can get a replacement, even if it doesn't cover the fish losses
  4. Redwoods are CLOSED FRIDAYS but otherwise open 11am - 6pm. I too recommend Organism, cnr Clyde and Ilam Rds.
  5. Try the forum in The Tropical Tank Mickey. It is UK based.
  6. I hate ornaments in tanks (terracotta pots for breeding don't count) and prefer the natural look in decor and colour. Also dislike unnatural colours in gravel - eg blue (no offence to those who like it, it is my personal opinion only) I like a tank with lots of smaller fish, like barbs and tetras, rather than a few large ones. Currently down to one tropical community with tetras, barbs, gouramis, hoplos and bristlenoses.
  7. Some will, some won't. Frequent water changes might speed the process up. So may carbon in the filter
  8. Hi Gavin. You might be interested to know WAWGS recently affiliated to the FNZAS Welcome
  9. Five tanks is not an obsession, it is merely an interest Welcome
  10. Fish are fish Julie. Try different stuff and see what they like. Make sure it hasn't any sprays on it and remove any uneaten bits before they go soft and rot.
  11. I have some full colour A4 posters for you if you like. I designed them for just this sort of thing. All I need is the actual details to add to it and I can print them and send them up.
  12. They produce every 4 - 6 weeks and how big they get depends on the individual females and how many fry they are holding.
  13. What sort of tank do you want? Planted or rockwork? Do you prefer a few large fish or lots of smaller ones? Do you want a slow, peaceful looking tank or a busy, active one?
  14. You two need to get together and plan a meeting then put posters up advertising it. Be proactive. An article in the local freebie paper helps too. Put the posters on noticeboards in supermarkets, libraries, vets, schools (if you don't do it until school has started again), malls, anywhere you see a noticeboard. Don't try and wait until you get enough people to hold a meeting, organise the meeting first or it will never go ahead.
  15. What size is your tank? Give us dimensions please, not US gallons. Is it tropical or coldwater? What sort of fish in it?
  16. Hi L and welcome to The Fishroom.
  17. The heater has a thermostat so will only turn on if the water gets cold enough. In summer (well, here anyway) it is always so warm the heaters never turn on so do not use electricity. If you meant you would turn it down to 24 - 26C from 28C then that makes sense.

    nibbled fins

Your Betta fins will continue to get nipped. Tetras and barbs can't resist the flowing fins
  19. and all this because I wanted to point out that the correct word for young fish is FRY and not bubbas
  20. Do not adjust the heaters. If the temperature is high enough in the room the heaters will stay off so not use extra power. You will not save anything by turning them off. Turning them to low will not make them safe either. If it sticks on, it will stick on high no matter what the temp is set to.
