  1. My daughter is 29 today so I took a birthday cake to her classroom. I am not the world's greatest cake maker but it is the thought that counts. At least the kids took one look at it and said "That's Denny Crane!!" so they knew what it was supposed to be. Kelly has a Birman she named Denny Crane after the character in Boston Legal. She felt they had the same attitude. Denny goes to school on occasion so the kids all know him. Kelly threatens one pupil with a knife  Cutting off his tail Admiring Denny's profile Denny was vanilla and on top of a chocolate cake so there was plenty for the class, staff at playtime, and leftovers to take home. The kids were very bloodthirsty and keen to see Denny sliced up. One was disappointed there was no blood when the knife went in :-?
  2. Red streaks in the tail can be caused by a number of things; 1. Poor water quality. Check ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Some say red streaks are associated with either high nitrate or low oxygen. More water changes are the answer. 2. Bacterial infection. If water changes haven't helped, test results show water quality is good and the fish is lethargic, then a bacterial infection may be the problem. You can buy meds for bacterial infections. Do not medicate unless you are sure of the disease! 3. A natural colouring in the fish. If they are very pale coloured fish the bloodlines show up in the fins. If the red streaks are associated with ragged looking fins it may be a bacterial infection or a result of vigorous spawning.
  3. BNs have large orange eggs. Don't know what colour SAE eggs are or if they breed in tanks.
  4. Having had Fluvals, Eheims and Jebo I found the Jebo quietest. I have to put my hand on it to feel the vibrations to make sure it is running.
  5. From the Dream moods dictionary - a site that helps you interpret dreams... Fish To see fish swimming in your dream, signifies insights from your unconscious mind. Thus to catch a fish, represents insights which have been brought to the surface. Alternatively, a fish swimming in your dream may symbolize conception. Some women dream of swimming fish when they get pregnant. The fish is also an ancient symbol of Christianity and Christian beliefs. Consider also the common phrases "like a cold fish", "fish out of water" or something that is "fishy" about a situation. It may also imply a slippery or elusive situation. To dream that you are eating fish, symbolizes your beliefs, spirituality, luck, energy and nourishment. It is food for the soul. To dream of cooking fish, indicates that you are incorporating your new realizations with your spiritual feelings and knowledge. To dream that you are cleaning fish, suggests that you are altering your emotional expression in a way that will be presentable to others. You are censoring yourself and not expressing how you completely feel.
  6. I sometimes dream about living underwater. A recent dream (non-fish related) was odd but the only bit I can remember is saying to a little girl of about 4 or 5 yrs, dressed in red Christmas outfit with white fur trim) "You realise at this time of year girls are called Christmas tarts?"  I thien woke up. That one was a bit of a worry!
  7. I have never dropped a fish. I have had plenty leap out of hands, nets, tanks and buckets, but I have never dropped one
  8. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say the area your tank was sitting on is level, rather than the tank itself
  9. Same thing. Water sprite is also known as Indian fern and is Ceratopteris thalictroides I was thinking of WCMMs when I mentioned the oxygen weed so you are probably right, 22C will be too warm for it
  10. One of our members used oxygen weed from the local river. Can't get cheaper than that Water wisteria and Indian fern are good too. They can hide in the floating leaves and the root systems.
  11. Aaron-betta I am drooling over that printer. I WANT ONE!!! Think how fast I could get the Aquarium World magazines done! Better yet, I want a machine that folds and staples books. My husband and I own a computer company plus I work one day a week as a medical receptionist. I also do desktop publishing work (small print runs of cards, advertising brochures, calendars, posters, Aquarium World magazine etc) mostly for clubs and other community groups. Never got around to getting a degree as I couldn't see the point since I haven't worked out what I want to do for a career yet
  12. and some of you are wondering why you are too broke to buy Christmas presents
  13. No but they can be pains in the A****
  14. I have never understood how anyone can drink Coke or Pepsi. Dreadful stuff! Not as bad as those V things and other caffeine laden energy drinks though. Yuck!!!
  15. You say the only thing different was spirulina chips. I tried a new brand of these once and the fish didn't like them so left them lying on the substrate. I noted they swelled up a lot more, once in water, than the previous brand of chips had done. I wonder if a chip has expanded inside the fish and now has 'gone off' as it hasn't been able to pass it? I once had a BN swell up (no extra bubbles anywhere though) and it exploded and died. All other fish fine.
  16. The rise in temperature does not 'get rid of it' on its own, it just speeds up the white spot cycle so the meds work more quickly.
  17. When we did our pond I contacted the council and they said since we weren't swimming in it, it was not a swimming pool therefore did not have to be fenced. No idea how deep it is but I think it is over the 400mm in places.
  18. I would check the legality as I believe it is protected.
  19. 1. They aren't fussy but can cope with quite a bit of current 2. You can never have too much aeration 3. Yes, but not as much as guppies do 4. Mine were happy with flake food 5. Varies with size and age of the female but not as many as other livebearers

    Keeping tanks cold

Frozen bottles of water did not work for us as the temperature differential was too great (the room sat at 28C and the water had to be 15C). It also meant our poor old freezer was running non-stop freezing more water! We can't keep a cold water marine here without a chiller. A standard cold water fresh is different though as they don't have to be as cold and Slikka pads or frozen bottles of water might be all you need.
  21. No the spray bar doesn't have to be above the water. Mine are below as I can't stand the noise otherwise.
  22. Feb is going great spink. More is always good though as it gives me choice when it comes to making sure each magazine has a little bit of everything (ie, tropical, cold, marine, food, disease etc) rather than have several breeding articles in the one magazine for instance. I also have to get May done and printed before we leave the country at Easter! We get back a couple of days before we leave again for the coromandel and the next FNZAS conference
  23. Some good idea here http://ezinearticles.com/?Look-To-The-9 ... &id=396771 or some printable free 90s theme games are here http://partysupplieshut.com/90s/90s-party-games.htm Top Ten TV Themes for the 90's The 1990s were a fun decade for television. It also was a fun decade for TV-show theme songs. Here are the top 10 TV-show theme songs of the '90s. #10. Everybody Loves Raymond Theme Song: What theme song?Everybody Loves Raymond actually never had an official theme song. It did have opening montages (for most of the episodes) which I found as funny as the show itself. I loved season 1 where the family goes by on a conveyor belt ending with Roberts saying in a very exasperated way "Everybody Loves Raymond". My other favorite was season 3 where Ray, Debra and the Kids realize Roberts parents are coming. Beethoven's 9th Symphony plays in the background while they hide any signs of life in the house, and Ray locks the door just before Marie gets to it. She then puts her hand in the mailbox slot touches Rays head. #9. Theme Song from Married... with Children: The TV show married with children debuted in spring of 1987 and ran until June of 1997. The theme song was "Love and Marriage" sang by Frank Sinatra. While the theme song was not specially made for the show, I know of few people who hear it and don't immediately think of the very popular, irreverent Fox TV Show. #8. America's Funniest Videos Theme Song: Also known as AFV, This series started in 1989 with Bog Saget who hosted the show until 1997. Daisy Fuentes and John Fugelsang took over the show for three years, and it is still running with Tom Begeron. There is no sign of it ending. Jill Colucci who sang the song live in several Bob Saget episodes originally recorded "The Funny Things You Do", the theme song. The song has been revamped over the years, but the song is still catchy and fun to sing. #7. Nanny Theme Song: The song from the TV show The Nanny is almost as distinctive as the laugh of the main character, Fran Fine played by Fran Drescher. The opening theme was called "The Nanny named Fran", and was written and recorded by Ann Hampton Callaway, a singer/ songwriter also known for starring in the Broadway musical "Swing!". #6. Full House Theme Song: The late 1987 sitcom that overlapped into the 1990s and still runs strong in sitcoms, Everywhere You Look; the theme song to Full House was as touching family song to go along with a touching family show. Jesse Federick who also co-wrote it with Bennet Salvay performed the song. The full version of the song was seldom played, but and even shorter versions are played in re-runs. Here is the complete first stanza much of which as often truncated: What ever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy, evening TV. How did I get to livin' here? Somebody tell me, please. The whole world's confusing me. Clouds as mean as you've ever seen. Not a bird who knows your tune. Then a little voice inside you whispers, "Kid, don't sell your dream so soon." #5. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Theme Song:The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a television sitcom that aired 1990, to 1996. The theme song, sang (or rapped) by the show's main character and recording artist, The Fresh Prince (Will Smith). Many think DJ Jazzy Jeff composed the music, but it was actually done by Quincy Jones III who was credited at the end of every show. The first three shows had the full version of the song, which told the entire premise of the show. It was later shortened, but few knew anything was missing. #4. A Different World Theme Song:A Different World, as show about student at a black college was a spin-off from the Cosby show. Although the main spin-off character, Denise Huxtable was dropped after the first show, it managed to run for six seasons. Phoebe Snow originally sang the coming of age song also named "A Different World," but in the second season, it was re-recorded by Aretha Franklin. In the final season, the song was sung by Boyz II Men. The lyrics make this theme song powerful and unique. The song lyrics are credited to Bill Cosby, Stu Gardner and Dawnn Lewis. The first stanza is: I know my parents love me, Stand behind me come what may. I know now that I'm ready, because I finally heard them say It's a different world form where you come from. #3. Friends Theme Song: "I'll Be There For You" by the Rembrandts was as big a hit as the debut of the TV show Friends when it premiered in 1994. (The show ran until 2004). This song was written by Michael Skloff and Allee Willlis and originally offered to the Rock groups They Might be Giants and REM. It was then passed to the Rembrandts who usually wrote all of their own songs. The song was not recorded as a single until a Tennessee DJ looped the short version of the song into a full-length track. The immense popularity spurred and official recording. #2. Cheers Theme Song: Who can't identify with "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name"? While this show started in the 1980s and ran until 1983, and the reruns are still going strong today. The song, "Where everybody knows your name was written by Gary Portnoy, who along with Judy Hart Angelo, also wrote the song from Punky Brewster "Every Time I Turn Around" and the theme to Mr. Belvedere. #1. Frasier Theme Song: The show Frasier ran from 1993 until 2004, and was a spin-off from Cheers. The song "Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs" was included on a CD released in 2000 featuring a number of songs taken from the show. An interesting fact is that the song had alternate endings that played at the end of the show. The endings included "They're callin' again.", "Good night, Seattle, we love you!" and "Scrambled eggs all over my face. What is a boy to do." The song was written by Bruce Miller and Darryl Phinnessee and performed by Kelsey Grammer. If the songs sounds like a blast from the past it is because it is an updated version of a "scatty nonsense tune instrumentally reminiscent of the vibe sounds of Gary Burton, the revival vocalese style of The Manhattan Transfer and the cartoonist humor of Bobby McFerrin," according to Miller. When commissioned to write the theme song, Gary Miller was told her could not mention psychiatry, crazy people or radio, but the song had to match the show. The lyrics ended up being rather cryptic, but on point.
  24. I find the fibreglass ones are not made deep enough and can overheat in summer without shade. Have you thought of using stock troughs?
