  1. oh dear, poor little guy. I had as BN once who got heater burn. The silly fish latch on while it's on the off cycle and don't realise when it's come back on and slowly burns them. let us know how you get on, and do add the salt - my choc zebra was perfectly OK with the salt. Just remember to reduce the salt concentration gradually afterwards.
  2. found plenty of guppy fry in my trickle filter , sometimes still alive.
  3. mafia wars is quietly addictive. can't be bothered with any of the others.
  4. wow, really - far out! I see there are a few unanswered questions on that auction.
  5. is there a problem if they are kept in ponds and not released?
  6. wow.. I've never seen oto fry before
  7. Mmmm, a bit of baked cheese on the pastry rodents would really tempt me!
  8. I now rinse all my new plants in a bleach solution. There is part of the whitespot cycle that can stay on the plants and you never know if new plants have been exposed to live fish or not.
  9. well i once lost my baby whip in the java fern.. right there in front of me but couldn't see him. I thought he was a dead leaf. I have also once trimmed up the Indian fern and found him hanging off.. so be careful while he's small!
  10. just heard the news about the Dolphin , most likely Moko. So sad. Poor thing, I have friends in whakatane who will be devastated. I'm glad an autopsy will be done, so they can find out what happened.
  11. it's just Inidan fern.. grows quickly in most conditons and is easy to transplant. It can be planted in substrate or left free floating.
  12. they grow slowly , taking about 18 months to reach adult size. Mine loves feeding on decaps brine shrimp eggs.. it floats all over the tank before settling on surfaces but he always finds it. Mine have never touched any sort of veges, they will happily eat blood worms, sinking tablets and flakes.
  13. well I'm mystified as to what happened to him then .. I looked everywhere and even in the filter. There is a very small opening at the back for the cables but it would be quite a high jump for him and to also be able to get past the cables. They can kill each other.. the breeder Phil did mention that. Though I'm not sure how. JS I don't think you need to worry about the whiptail and the Kribs.
  14. isn't that your flying fox?
  15. I put two small black whiptails in my community tank which houses female betta, dwarf gourami, guppies, kuhli loaches, otos and choc zebra. They were only 3.5cm and 5cm so very small and skinny! The smaller one disappeared after a day or so and I'm pretty sure the other whiptail killed it and then all the fish then ate it. The other fish have not bothered the 5cm one at all and they all get along just fine, which is why I think the 5cm killed the 3.5cm one. When I bought them, the seller bagged them up separately for me in case they turned on each other in the bag .. so that was my first warning! He said they shoudl be fine together in a community tank with lots of hidey places .. but I think I wouldn't buy two together again unless they were both the same size. I have an almost full sized black whiptail in another tank. he was put in as a baby as well, with a male betta and two platy - no problems there either. here are the two babies, the one on the glass was the tinier one. here is my adult whiptail who interestingly has become a creamy brown colour.
  16. I have two "black" whiptails, one is near on full size at 9-10cm so they don't grow too big .. and yes always visible. they tend to have their favorite spots. My smaller one is always right at the front on an ornamental log. They love decaps brine shrimp and get quite active walking all over the tank looking for it. And it does look like they are walking - cool fish!
  17. i have two dwarf gourami in a 160L tank. One is definitely dominant but they both chase each other around the tank. No harm is ever done and then the other will turn around and be the chaser. They just chase in short bursts and then go back to their merry ways. It's actually quite amusing to watch and I love how when they get close to each other they raise their ventral fins to feel each other.. it doesn't always end in a chase. I have bushy Indian fern (gosh i love how that grows so fast) and other hidey places if they want. But usually they are in close proximity to each other.. it's like a love hate relationship. so funny.
  18. most definitley they came with the plants. I got some recently, I even dipped the leaves of the plant in a weak bleach solution and then ran it under running water. But STILL managed to find snails in the tank after putting the plant into a bare bottomed tank with no snails previously. I now have some little baby ramshorns and a snail that looks like a little pond snail that hatched from eggs in jelly that i later found.
  19. I've only been there once and yes it was a truly beautiful . We are very lucky in NZ to have so many varying landscapes.
  20. most of the worm treatments seem ok for the bio filter. I've used prazi and aviverm and not had any problems.
  21. make it more like 4 Tablespoons which will give you around 60 - 70g salt. This is still under what plants can tolerate if you have plants but you could go up to 5T short term. That's the concentration I used for my Plec and I doubled it over a few days until spots cleared and then started reducing again. I think BNs can tolerate salt quite well and my choc zeb was fine with that.
