  1. the other fish are guppies, female betta, 1 platy, kuhli loaches, Otocinclus, dwarf goruami. plus I had some guppy fry for a few minutes lol.. just watched the gourami and Betta eat them. They seem all clear this morning. I've added salt and increased the temp to 28 and will increase again this evening to 29 I will try treating the choc zebra in a QT with meth blue and salt. I found this article on treating plecs for ich... what do you think: http://badmanstropicalfish.com/articles/article60.html
  2. SALT I'm goign to put some salt in the main tank tonight, I won't try and catch him till tomorrow but the salt will help in the meantime and also for the other fish. I am mindful of the kuhli and whiptails so was thinking 6 teaspoons of salt - the tank is an AR850 which i think is about 155-160L 6 teaspoons enough?
  3. thanks for the advice and reassurance. I'm so glad I found this forum! It has been immensely helpful in my fishkeeping journey. well no need to rush out to HFF this weekend. Was going to QT some new import guppies and get the rainbow shark, But the shark can wait and I'm sure they will get more guppies in again. I must be patient.
  4. My temp is 26-27oC . Not sure of temp he came from but have emailed the breeder. Can't think of anything that would stress him other than the move itself. I haven't seen any fish picking on him, he comes out when sinking food is out in but hangs back a bit. Oh i soo didn't need this!
  5. I guess I'll "Try" and catch him tomorrow to put in the QT tank! do I need to do anything for the main tank? and getting a rainbow shark for the main tank Is probably off the cards now right?
  6. eek.. do I need to quarantine him, or do I now need to treat the whole tank anyway. None of my other fish are showing signs. What is the incubation of ich and how did it get in my tank? Darn it, was really wanting to get the shark this weekend OK, do I need to halve the salt and any medication?. I don't have whitespot cure so i'll need to go get some .. is Blue circle the recomended one? will it turn the silicone blue? I just have meth blue and acrifialvine and furan 2 on hand.
  7. I've only had this little guy since the weekend and tonight noticed he has white spots on him!!! I can't tell if they are raised or not. I've not dealt with ich before so don't know exactly what to look for. All my other fish are fine. This fish was bought from a reputable breeder so is there a problem in my tank? What should I do? I was planning on getting a small rainbow shark this weekend but not if ich is in my tank!
  8. oh , sorry to hear your dream is crushed. But maybe better in the long run. That might be hard to hear right now but it did sound like you needed to sort a few issues out in your current tank and those L46 are mighty expensive fish to learn with! Not even I would be game , even if I had the $$. Though I would like some one day! I can understand how pricey it would cost to set up another whole tank just for them,... there's several hundred dollars right there! But keep that dream in mind for the future - I am! Hopefully the price on zebras will go down in future years if anyone can get a hold of breeding pairs. We're going into HFF this weekend (to get a rainbow shark) so i will once again drool by the zebra tank! .. and then go home and will my chocolate zebra to change it's stripes haha. I got him from a breeder so haven't seen the HFF choc zebras yet but will have a nosey. My choccie is coming along nicely by the way, has really darkened up and comes out in the evenings for us to see him.. just can't photograph him as he's scared of the camera. Everyone is getting along nicely so hopefully the rainbow shark won't upset things, I will get the smallest i can find and he's the last addition to the tank .. as advised!
  9. by the end of the year it will be 16. My 15 year old isn't bothered.. wants to get NCEA out of the way first anyway.
  10. I liked the guppies in the picture! But it's my delta tail red tux that performs the sneak matings while my wildtype male tries to show off with his pathetic little tail and does the whole shaking courtship thing. (but he is quite pretty in his own right!) you're a fish??
  11. I use mine :-) got a guppy in there right now! recovering in peace from a torn tail inflicted by an annoyed female. Lightly salted water which he wouldn't get in the main tank. Will probably put my rainbow shark in there too when I'm ready to buy one.
  12. a qauranatine tank is a really good idea, not only for quarantining new fish but also isolating sick fish that need extra TLC or medication. I keep a 20L tank for that purpose as none of my fish are really big (biggest is dwarf gourami) . It is bare bottomed for easy cleaning, can just use a turkey baster to suck up waste daily. Has a Hang on filter , but I also have a sponge filter if a betta or a really weak fish needs to be in there. I keep it cycled with platy or guppy fry so it's always ready to put fish in. (and the fry go back into whichever tank they came from) I really would recommend one, especially if you're ever buying livebearers from a petshop!!! I speak from experience as they are the only fish I have ever had problems with -- on more than one occasion too. shop bought livebearers! (notably guppies)
  13. they do look like female guppies except that their dorsal fin is set further back than a guppy. They were brought into NZ as mosquito fish because soldiers thought they were going to get malaria here! there are fines if you are caught breeding them or releasing them.... and yes very aggressive. will even turn on each other!
  14. i can almost guarantee they won't be guppies.. they will be gambusia.. an illegal pest fish - you must not keep them nor return them. You now have to destroy them,. sorry!
  15. probably just means - do the whole course as per instructions on card, the same as if you were on antibiotics,. Drs always tell us to complete the course, even if symptoms are gone.
  16. Have you made any decisions yet Jennifer? there's no way i can have a fancy plec so will live my dreams through you lol.
  17. my Betta makes bubbles nests , no female in his tank eiether I haven't seen dwarf gourami females around.. do you have one?
  18. i think phoenix means the L270 Choc zebra and L46 b&w zebra
  19. oh wow ! how exciting! You'll want to make sure everything is going well before you put those in. Let us know when you get them! Hmmm, how far is beachlands from wattle downs ;-)
  20. oh that is really awful for you and frustrating not to know what is wrong. I've had a similar problem with my guppies, one after the other dieing, but mostly males. This was after adding imported guppys.. never again! I have since learned that mixing imported with NZ bred guppies can cause this. Have been clear for a few weeks now.. until tonight :-( just noticed another of my male guppys with a tell tale whitish spot developing. agggh, Only my guppies are affected , nothing else thank goodness. I had already broken down my quarantine and disinfected it and was in the process of cycling it again when i noticed the new one. Hopefully he'll pull through. which sort?? I finally saw my chocolate zebra again today, he comes out of hiding but then dashes for the driftwood when he sees me.
  21. what is that? oh wow - I want!
  22. I know - silly fish! hope he doesn't try that again. He really was quite stuck and I thought I was going to kill him just trying to get him out. How about daily salt baths, as I'm not keen on putting salt in this tank because there's kuhli in there.
  23. pics of the injured fish the driftwood you can see below is the piece he got stuck in!
  24. mcrud, well ZEB or ZED as my hubby insists is hiding under a piece of driftwood so I can't get a good pic but will try again tomorrow. here's a couple I took while he was still in the floating bag though. He's darkened up since being in the tank and is still a baby so I guess he will even colour up some more as time goes on.
  25. I got one today too! they're very cute aren't they. Will try and get a photo later.
