    driftwood

we collect ours from the local beaches, also check out any largish rivers after a good downpour.
  2. Just becareful to not get too finer sand, otyherwise you will end up with it everywhere. we use "Daltons Propogating Sand" Which is a fine gravel/coarse sand and the plants love it. It is designed for frowing cuttings in out of water and is easy for the plant roots to push through. I also suspect that there is a fairly healthy iron content in it, as we never fertilise or use c02 and have no probs with growth. Bout $6.95 from the warehouse. B
  3. Wok, Tease nooooo he wouldn't do that would he??

    Hi Everyone

  6. They shold be fine, the malawis won't bother them much and the other hoplo will just think he has friends. Just don't get them to small as they might not handle the attention of the malawis yes, as joanwilly have said they will be fine, we have about ten of them in a sand and rock only enviroment, and the are fine. 7. i agree with Wok on thr hoplos but also any of the Geophagus species, as they sift the grael for food Ballistic
  8. And if you are coming down that far, you may aswell hit wellington too Animates x 2 Hutt Pets Animalz x 3 And there is a new one in khandallah combined with a vet clinic It's only and hour and a half from Palmy to Welly Ballistic
  9. they may tend to pick on the 3rd a little, as he will try to be part of the group and they will see him as a threat and constantly harass him keeping him away from the breeding site. Keep an eye on them as the 3rd may learn to steer clear of the other two. Ballistic
  10. Better luck next time ludimac, but at least it looks like you have a pair and the reason I say looks like is that i once had angel eggs only to find out they were both female, so the eggs weren't being fertilised) As Alan has said try hanging a peice of slate in the tank for them, although this works for some it never did for me, they always laid elsewhere and usually on something that wasn't easily removed If you feed them up on things like bloodworms and live foods they will be in good condition next time they spawn. All the best with the breeding Ballistic
  11. The parents may look after the fry, don't count on it, they usually do eat them the first couple of times, but they will get the hang of it. Your other fish will try to eat the fry if they get the chance, often tho the parents won't let others near. not sure of the exact time frame till they hatch but expect to wait a couple of days at least. if you can slide a divider into the tank and seperate the angels from the rest of this fish in the tank, this will give them a better chance at raising the young. Also do not fret if you can't find the young once they hatch as some parents will move the young around the tank. All The best with the first spawn. Ballistic
  12. Hi there ludimac my guess is that the angels are tending their young. The positioning is fairly common for angels, and anything else in the tank would more than likely scattered the eggs all over the place. Also the picking that you mentioned is probably them half fanning the eggs but also picking out any that seem to be fungusing. Of course the other option is that if they are first time parents then they will more than likely eat them.( not saying they will, but be prepared for it. Ballistic
  13. Also in regards to heating the room, as long as you insulate it properly you can heat it during the day with fluro lights, both over the tank and also aloong the ceiling lighting the room. Then to maintain the room temp overnight, you can have normal screw or bayonet fittings with Red light bulbs in them running. As fish don't see the red spectrum, it will not bother them at all. As for summer temps, why not have a small extractor fan on a timer to run for an hour every two or three hours to pull the hot air out of the room. Ballistic Senior
  14. Tank looks good malawiman, don't have any tips as only made a 3 foot tank before and that is the largest I would trust myself to make. Ballistic Senior

  18. This is a little off topic, but why not make thase details a locked sticky at the top of one of the sections and then we can all link to it, and we can also add in fastways details as they will also caourier fish too. this will save on the lengthy discussions of who carries fish, as all the details will be in one place. B
  19. heya Ryan, We tend to use Fastway, and we have never had any problems with them and everyone seems to be pretty happy with the condition that the goodies have arrived in. hope this helps. Ballistic and Mystic
  20. Hey there, you will know it's daphnia by the way that it swims, they will swim in jerky movements ( or little bursts maybe more precise) the daphnia will usually be clear depending on what they have been eating, if they have had strwbrry's they go a reddish pink, and if they are feeding on green water they go a light green in colour hope this helps B
