  1. a few lessons learnt is: have low numbers of fish per bag, have them in closed poly boxes, if long trips (like moving 12 hours away) have heat packs or bags of hot water to help keep them warm. and pack the fish last and unpack them first.
  2. wow thats not who i was thinking who won it. but whoever won it has some serious tools for sale! i really hope that whoever won it will carry on breeding the killies and make them redialy available. but i only rember seeing one or maybe 2 albino varietes of killie in barries tanks, could possibly be more.
  3. i dont think the guy who now has barries collection will join. (if its who im thinking of) i cant find barried expired auction, anyone got the number?
  4. where abouts in auckland are you? theres atleast 1-2 that i know of whos breeding them
  5. PML that was awsome. my boss caught me watching it during work time so had to try explain how squirting cats with a hose was related to work. it was....
  6. it would probally be better having an above ground pond with a 'radiator' or heat exchanger buried under ground with a pump connected to a thermostat to pump water through when its cold, and turn the pump off when its reached temp. hmmm makes me want to move to rotorua. or use ryan jurys idea, kinda, and get a insulated shipping container and seal off half of it and full it with water. instant monster fish tank!
  7. big tropical ponds required to breed large numbers of prawns but theyve done it. makes me wonder how warm a pond will be if you put one in the back lawn in rotorua....
  8. i bought me an extra string of xmas lights just for this reason!
  9. albino aratus, i know that ryan jury should be able to sort you out with some of the aratus snow whites convics angels thatsx all i can think of from the top of my head
  10. i personally dont like them, i have heard too many stories about them breaking and the last curved corner tank ive heard of breaking was about 3 months ago, but as ryan said the stories have slowed down?
  11. ive got mine in a $10 clip on lamp from the wharehouse. just make sure that its a screw fitting.
  12. remove the parents once you see the eggs and try not to feed the parents in the spawning tank. and you could try another tetra like glowlights first for experience as ive heard that neons are hard to breed.
  13. peat moss makes the water slightly acidic and light brown, not sure if it makes it sofeter. you can get it from gardening stores in large yellow bags
  14. rain water it normally very soft thats why its used. can also use distilled water mixed in with tap water or RODI water or a water softner bag you can get from your LFS. have you read the cardinal tetra article on breeding cardinals? its the same process you need to youse to breed them http://www.fnzas.org.nz/index.php?PG=cardinal
  15. thats a good article, can we get it put into the articles section on the FNZAS home page, in the same section as the cardinal tetra breeding guide.
  16. the quest for the albino black guppy! waiting impatiently for photos of the offspring! I grabed some of them too, im planning on putting one with a half black female to try get a concrete strain of black moscows and the other with some red females to try get a nice red moscow.
  17. apple seeds would be the culprict
  18. but its the same theory, lust double or triple the size, i think having it in a greenghouse and jungle it is a good idea. have half the greenhouse the pond, build it up and have a glass viewing hole 5/6ft x 2ft and your set. cobble stone the other half of the greehouse and add a little table and chairs and it would be a nice place to have your lunch. or add it into your basement instead of outside.
  19. not nessesarily, ive done it alot of times before and the only deaths ive had from mixing a male with a bunch of girls is that i incorrectly sexed one of the 'girls' when it was a male PK and the PK kept killing all the other males i introduced. aslong as theres some cover like plants it works. this is how my first fish tank was setup and worked great. it all ended with the male getting a growth on his side and near the end all the girls where holding him upright near the top of the tank to keep him alive.
  20. if it was me i would do a pair of drawf cichlids like steel blues or kribs. and half dozen tetras. or if you want to do the fighter thing have a long tailed male fighter and 4-6 females in the tank. since it will be planted there will be places for the females to hide and since theres a few females the males 'spirit' will be spread between all the girls. and being a long finned male it will slow him down so the girls can run away easier. could also add 3ish cories.
  21. ive only names one, and that was a CT fighter due to a young toddler said that it looks like a hedgehog. hence why our pets name for the animates card is 'hedgehog fish' i think that fish should only be named if they get to about a foot in length. any smaller and it seems kinda pointless
  22. bloat can happen to other species. fighters are a prime example
