  1. to confirm it is the black shark (which i think it is) i would take him out and put him in a tank alone for a few weeks and see if the problem is resolved if not then obviously its not so try another one.but i think you will find the problem will go when he's gone.
  2. i completly agree with livingart, i couldnt have said it better myself.
  3. i havnt seen that before and iv kept them rtogether on a number of ocations and plenty of people i know have as well with out any problems.how well feed are your discuss could it be that they are hungry? at the end of the day that is a better dilema than the discus being picked on......just thinking glass half full lol
  4. absolutley i have used plenty of drift wood that i have collected from different beaches and never had any probs other than trying to get it to sink which can take some time depending on the wood.just make sure its had a good soak also just before i would put it in my tank i would poor some boiling water over it just incase there were any unwanted bugs etc on it.
  5. id ee with the others and say the black shark i have heard some nasty stories about these over the years.
  6. heres a easy one.place some schnitzel (uncrumbed) onto a baking tray put some thinly sliced onions, mushrooms, bacon, tomatoe fresh, then cheese and finally some bread crumbs to stop the cheese sliding off.bake in a hot oven 180 c for about 15-20 mins.serve with salad and baked spud.yopu can change any of the toppings ie asparagus, olives etc its basically a pizza with the schnitzel as the base.
  7. they all get on fine but i wouldnt keep the smaller types with the larger ones.you could have a real nice tank with them and some of the smaller south american cichlids wish i had a spare 600l tank.for best display i used to keep only males as allot of the females arnt nearly as colourfull but its up to the individual i spose.good luck keep me posted and some pics would be great.
  8. there are quite a few available from time to time nigrans, bosemani, lacustrus, new guinea red, trifasciata, axelrodi, furcata's,blue eye's,neon dwarf and there are others that i cant remember.they are lovely fish i had a big tank full of them quite a few years ago.
  9. yea its pretty cool no the pond is minnows guppies and orandas the guppies obviously get taken out for winter and also freshwater shrimp.in the tank im going to put crayfish both types of bullies and inanga.i would like to put some pics on but dont no how.
  10. have already done it and on our hottest day it gets to 20 so should be fine.also has plenty of current as the tank sits on the edge of the pond on a slight angle and water is pumped from the pond into the tank which then flows down the front glass of tank back into the pond looks very cool.
  11. im not sure of his name sorry.but im stocked as i can now stock my outside tank with them and put the orandas into the pond.
  12. Their is a guy in raglan who breeds them he has been for quite a few years but i think he had to get through allot of red tape to get a licence to allow him to sell them.as part of the deal he also has to put back a certain % of what he has breed into the area.
  13. Was in tropical blues yesterday and got talking to mark and he tells me they will be stocking koura, bullies, inanga etc aparently them and hollywoods are the only ones who will be doing it in the north island.the bullies have great colour from what he told me and the crays are aparently a very good size.
  14. put on a erotic movie and some nice soft music that should get her going....and maybe a box of chocolate fish lol
  15. i have 3 types in my tank and they are constantly out swimimng around the front of the tank.i feed blood worm white worm algae tabs and trout crumbles.but when i first got them i didnt see them at all for the first couple of weeks and after that they got more confident.its a heavily planted tank with lots of drift wood and a few rocks.
  16. i think i fed a bit of whit worm as well which would be good for conditioning the females and when the top of the tank is covered in water sprite it acts as an insulator sealing of the water surface...also there wasnt allot of water movement either.i couldnt tell ya about my ph but see if ya can get some bog wood as i did have a big peice in there which would also help your ph.my tank def wasnt 27 degrees though more like 25 i think
  17. dosnt need to be a big tank but as i say i would have plenty of the water sprite on top as i also think this made the adults feel secure as well.you could do either with or without but i would have some drift wood in there as i think they need sumfin to lay eggs on before she pics them up but not certain as i didnt see them do it.good luck.i actually couldnt beleive my eyes whan i saw i had babies as aparently they are hard to breed but its just a matter of right conditions i think
  18. um it was about 5 years ago the temp would have been about 25/26c and i think i had about 3 2 females and a male but cant remember exactly.it was just a comunity tank and didnt have any intentions of breeding them so didnt pay allot of atention to detail.but if you are going to i would highly recoment having water sprite or indian fern floating on the top as it gave them great cover and i suspect they were feeding from any micro organisms that may have been in there cause by the time i noticed them they were of a good size and all i had been feeding was blood worm.
  19. yes i have breed them all be it by accident.i had them in a heavily planted tank with discuss.and i didnt no they had breed until i noticed tiny copies of there parents amongst the water sprite floating on top of tank.the sprite gave them great cover which stopped the discuss from seeing them let alone eating them.
  20. i no how you feel i have about 200 plus minnows eaten and 3 small orandas by king fishers i back onto a gully and theres heaps of the buggers.he even left his calling card....a nice dollop of bird crap on the top of the tank the orandas were in lol

welcome so what sort of fish are ya keeping then?
  22. yes i am well aware of that but 12 shrimp shouldnt make a huge impact on the eco system from were i collect them and there are plenty of them there anyway.
  23. yup but im thinking they are allot faster than my big fat well fed oranda's and if they do eat them no biggie there free
  24. they would be about 16cm but as you no they arnt the fastest swimmers so i think im better of with shrimp which is a bugger as the cray would have looked great in there.
  25. i have a pond and have just made a water feature out of a large fish tank.the water is pumped from the pond up into the tank and it just over flows back into the pond and it looks great.anyway my qusetion is i have oranda's in there at the present and i would like to add a couple of fresh water crays?all thats in the tank is gravel which is covered with glossastigma will the cray harm my orandas?any advice would be apreciated.if not i will go with shrimp.
