  5. u could buy a foam camping mattress u know the blue 1s they are cheap at the warehouse , cut it up and cable tie it around ur hoses could also cut out pieces and duct tape them together to make a sleeve to fit over ur filter
  6. they some times have puffers down here, they are neat lil fishes so are the gobys mine are getting bigger now they are in brackish water my tanks not that serious its a small tank made up of odds and ends and a rough but working excellent DIY filter i was using organic sea salt (no flowing agent or iodine) now im using red sea marine salt the colours have come up good in the gobies
  7. i like the look of plain river sand its grains run in size from tiny to very small gravel nice and natural looking also very cheap

    pH

try feeding the fish less as less food equals less waste which is acid
  9. mmm mite have to up grade at some stage then its a really small tank its similar to an r338 but with an more effiecent filter has fluidised bed as well as way bigger in (but now on top) hood filter as well as a magi jet sand from supramanxj and jave fern and java moss (which will prolly die if i dont reduce the sg ) i did think about going open top with mangrove seedlings roots hanging in the water however i couldnt source ane.

    Burnt plug

bad connection arcing , sparking lots of heat lucky no fire
  11. yes i forgot about that site  that answers my question bout salinity i will lower it a bit to allow for evaporation and temperature fluctuations , its dosent say anething bout housing puffers with mollies maybe this is a no go mite make a puffer set up in the future then im sort of thinking my tank would be too small for a puffer aneway
  12. thats true ane animal or plant in an estaurine environment must be able to handle a fair whack of salt and salinities changing all the time
  13. yeah i read somewhere people use them to cycle marine tanks another thing how slowly should u change SG the mollies where in freshwater 3 days ago dont know if thats bad i hope not they still healthy tho
  14. i guess 1.010 is a bit high this early on before i know its almost half seawater! but both species appear healthy and display normal behavior does ane1 know from experience? i would like to get a puffer if tank size and compatibility permits the 1s i have seen for sale lately are in 1.010 water( though i will be testing this with my hydrometer and noting the temperature before i buy 1) im reasonably sure mollies can handle a fair bit of salt so its really the gobies im worried about
  15. hi all i have looking for a suitable SG to set my brackish tank that will suit both mollies and bumblebee gobies its at 1.010 now a lot of the google results have different values so could some 1 in the know suggest a good value ? also wondering if FIg 8 puffers are ok with mollies and what the minimum size tank u need to keep them in is
  16. yeah it depends how much u are willing to pay for the look u want i like the look of a bluey white
  17. i have a small brackish tank with 2 mollies and two bumblebee gobies(btw looking for more!) i wanted to hatch brine shrimp so i thort about this and im now using an old gupping fry trap one of the cheap plastic 1s i put this in the tank and sprinkle the eggs on top they are held in the surface tension as there is no turbulance in it, they hatch overnight (these are the nz brine shrimps) 2 feed them out simply lift the trap 1 or two centimetres out off the water this sucks the 1s in mid water out into the tank thru the gaps in the bottom of the trap while the un hatched eggs and shells remain at the top , and they will still live and possibly grow inside this once u think all the eggs are hatched use an eye dropper to suck them off the top then do a last final feed of the mid water 1s,. perhaps this could be improved with a lite proof lis and sides so they naturally swim out to the bottom , however i dont think i will do this as my filter will get most of them i turn the filter off 4 a few mins while feeding so so they arnet sucked away.
  18. i depends on the paint itself ive been using sand over it then painting over the sand its not shiny then
  19. bluff oysters are exported and i'll go with 'New Scientist' on this one sorry dude: http://www.newscientist.com/blog/enviro ... bulbs.html
  20. it will be a tight fit put some towels down around it no doubut u will spill water pull straight up using the handles around the sides of the top
  21. i work at a recycling centre down here we do not recycle the energy saver bulbs as there is no current viable option for recovering the mercury , ni- cad batteries are the same; however it astounds me how many people say to me "but wat about the mercury?cadmium?" this is what i say to them do u eat fish and chips once a week ? they say yes. do u have ane idea how much mercury u are eating over a year from the fish? depending on the fish and age of the fish up 2 10 times the amount of mercury that is in the bulb u are complaining about! this normally shuts them up if they go on about mercury in landfills , i tell them to think of where the mercury comes from in the first place its out of the ground! then i reasure them its not leeching out into rivers(CHCH has a high tech land fill at kate valley where thick plastic sheeting is laid on the valley floor b4 ane rubbish is dumped this means leechate runs off in to special holding tanks at the bottom end of the valley and is sprayed over top again or disposed of safely if there is too much) now if they are complaining about cadmium , i ask them if they eat bluff oysters. they normally say yes i love them , then i tell them bluff oysters have so much cadmium in them they cant be exported. in short the mercury thing is a crock of #### as far as im concerned this goes for dental fillings as well. another thing is NZ fishmeal its too high in mercury to be used as animal feed or fish food here so most of our fishmeal is exported mainly to china where a lot of it is rolled up to lil balls and used to feed baby eels on eel farms. when u buy animal feed containing fishmeal or straight fishmeal here it will be imported from china with low mercury
  22. u can buy epoxy paints as well or buy a water based epoxy clearcoat and mix in paint however some of the solvent based epoxies wont set with paint pigments in them but u could try a layer of epoxy then a layer of paint then another layer of epoxy
  23. yep i will give u some when he gets round to catching me some
