  1. the bunnings stuff is quite natural looking not like the dyed stuff you get
  2. well more to the point no ferts added there will be a nutrient value naturally in it but ferts can burn delicate seedlings so are omitted from the seedling mix
  3. potting mix always has fertilisers and what ever pathogens that grow in soil , seed raising mix is better its been sterilised normally and contains no ferts
  4. coke in a reject can that hasnt been laquered properly isnt good , plastic bottles well most of the time i tpour it into a glass aneway now borbon is a different story

  6. the substrate should fill in the 10cm gap if u make it higher at the back and slope it down towards the front of the tank
  7. its quite rare from what i understand is this the 1 that looks like a branche of a tree?
  8. if ur gunna fed them crawling bugs sand would be best or rocks too large to be swallowed same as axies they will quite often swallow gravel with food as their toungues are really sticky

    mirror tint

maybe making the back and sides from mirror glass would help then a white substrate like white sand as white is the next best thing to a mirror for reflecting light

    Keeping tanks cold

is this a peltzier effect 1? like you can take in ur car or an actual fridge? with the peltzier 1s its hard to get more than a couple of degrees drop unleass its a real small tank like less than 10l. a small fridge pulled to bits with tubing for water wrapped around the evaporator then insulated would do but a lot of work and fridges arent cheaps, could also do this with a dehumidifier there is articles on this if u google them, the water cooler 1s on the net may work if u are using a refridgant powered 1 and u adjust the thermostat on the back, but agin not cheap and the peltzier water coolers wont have enuff power to do it
  15. i have trouble remebering the 90s or anething special about it. i think thats a bit wierd for me as 1 was born in 1984 and survived 10 years of it, edit: actually i take that back after reading the list of bands above, the 90s was when i got into 80s music and realised most 90s music was no longer worth listening to
  16. also test ur tap water to see what u are starting with

    Keeping tanks cold

plenty of DIY systems out there on the net but depending on what your wanting to chill to i think u will think buying a proper chilling unit the best option as a lot of the diy units will cost almost the same use more power and not be able to chill to the same capacity or be as controllable
  18. i remember reading a post i cant find now about some type of sylvania tube you can get that has certain percentages of UV light , from a lighting wholesaler and possibly a whole lot cheaper than prpoer 1s
  19. if u can grow green algae u can grow plants first off plants need nice water , then heaps of light no gud if ur tube in ur tanks is 2 years old it may function and looks good to you but its useful light output for growing plants is gone within a year . a decent substrate helps fine gravel of sand(NB without getting to fancy here) . fish to poo to fertilise them basics . from here it starts getting complicated and expensive flourish ecel is a good wway to get plants started and growing good without all the work and may well get u interested seriuosly in a planted aqauarium
  20. i could get u a fibreglass bath from my work if u really want , spa pools come in occaisionally too
  21. put the heaters at the ends of the tank same as filter hoses if the lid of the tank lets you otherwise carefully cut the background about 20cm from 1 end and glue it in so the end is 10-15cms from the front of the tank leaving a triangle shaped gap in the corner put heaters and intake strainer in here. then cut a an overflow peice out of the top or make small holes right thru it
  22. out of curiuosity what is the bottom of ur tank aquascaped with? ie plants? rocks? lil cave?
  23. if u look at buying a bulldog pup a beardy will seem cheap!
