  1. So I had a very old bone cow jaw to go in my BTS cage as decor. To sterilize it I read that you can soak it in 10% bleach solution then bake it in the oven. Well I did this but when I was baking it, the most rancid smell came from the bone. In fact it was so rotten that it almost made my eyes water (there must have been some rotten flesh on the inside or something). I was gagging and coughing while trying to get rid of the smell that wouldn't go away. Some few minutes later my mate walked in and said he could smell fish and chips and wanted to know if there were leftovers :rotf: . I'm not gonna lie, I was tempted to dish the bone jaw up to him on a plate haha.
  2. I got a couple of blue tongues but have never owned a beardie. Mine are friendly as hell although one is a little bit more shy than the other. It just matters how much you hold them imo as the more you hold them, the more the get used to you and realise that they can trust you. I dunno....it worked for me. And the other thing is each animal has a different personality so you can get socialble blue tongues and grumpy blue tongues. Same goes with a beardie I would imagine.
  3. Cheers man. Yeah the background is simply polystyrene cemented over and highlighted with paint (dont worry, I have researched paint and cement that is able to be used safely in reptile enclosures). I have actually meshed over the vents and the gap at the top because he can squeeze through gaps in the vents and I also found him once when I got home, chilling on top of the enclosure lol. Didn't know BTSs could climb that well . I mean that is a vertical rockface that he scaled
  4. Ok guys...here it is. My BTS enclosure I've been working on for a little while now. I have built everything myself incl wiring and background and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Here's the details: Size: 1200x600x600mm Material: Top, back and sides - 18mm 7ply. Front - Two panes of 5mm glass Lighting/Heating: 1x 60mm flourescent tube light for uvb 5.0 tube. 2x spot bulb fixtures, one with 100w basking spot and the other, a thermostat controlled 100w moonlight lamp for better temp regulation. Substrate: NON-pine Aspen shavings. Decor: Cow bones and goat bones and a cruddy wooden box lol. He's in his hide at the moment but he's been roaming like a bauwss already.
  5. I would definately say that it would be an argentinian black and white tegu for me aye. Those things are so cool cos they look like a monitor and are completely docile (if trained right). Some say even as much as a dog. Oh.....and they grow to about 4 feet. Damn right my place wouldn't be burgled lol!
  6. Ok cheers, will that be harmful to the Lizard though? Does the two days in water get rid of all bleach residue? I would imagine that the bones would soak up some of the bleach but not sure as to whether it can be washed out or not.
  7. Ok so I forgot to mention I left them soaking in hot water overnight, and then put them through a brief stint in the oven. One jaw bone smelled so bad I had to throw it out. The others kinda smell but nowhere near as bad.
  8. So I've got some old as cow bones that I collected when I was little and thought they would look so badass in my BTS enclosure. The only problem is that I don't know how to disinfect them so that there is nothing harmful on the bones (parasites, fungus etc) without using a disinfectant that would be harmful to my lizard. I don't know whether there is anything harmful already on the bones as they have been sitting in a box for years and years but thought it better to be safe then sorry. Anyone got any ideas? They would be much appreciated thanks.
  9. I need someone to pick up some potential whistling tree frogs for me that I hopefully am going to buy (depending on the results I get from this question). I live in Palmerston North but am far too busy to travel down to wellington. I can help out with petrol if need be. Give me a buzz if you can help out.
  10. So I was thinking of having a basking spot bulb, flourescent tube AND a heat emitter (red or ceramic). Is this too much? Do I only need the basking spot bulb and flourescent tube?
  11. Oh, its not for whistlers haha. Its for a blue tongue. I got the tank wednesday and I'm wiring up the lights and electrical side of things with an electrician mate this weekend hopefully. Off to buy mesh and turf tomorrow. So for BTs, is that a good temp then?
  12. Is it better to use those red infrared heat bulbs or ceramic heat emitters? Or does it matter? Also, would a 60w of either suffice to bring temp up to about 25-30 degrees C in a terrarium (not used as a basking lamp)? Neet advice Cheers.
  13. Flies are good, but not much nutrition thats the only thing compared to something like a cricket. Definately the most readily available (for me anyway) and if bought, probably the cheapest. However, if you have the energy to breed crickets, then thats probably best. I feed my whistlers on little pinheads (and fruitflies for variation) at the mo. Will feed them larger ones as they grow. Other foods can be slaters, small-med locusts, grasshoppers, cicadas (my golden bell loves cicadas in the summer), moths. Just make sure they are from pesticide free areas.
  14. The reason why I ask this is that I want to buy one of gregs tanks. The cost is $180.00 for the tank so I was like sweet . Then I asked shipping price and that is about $160-$170 . So if someone was going to or from auckland, maybe they could pick this up for me? I am willing to pay an amount for petrol. I cant go because I cant get the time off work and I'm real busy outside of work as well esp. easter. Cheers guys.
  15. Another question. I know that BTs need UV light. Its essentail for promoting D3 in their bodies and helps avoid MBD....and so on. Just looking on the net at a Reptile One 10.0 36inch 30w UV tube. Cosidering that the lamp is going to be 60cm approx away from the reptile, is this powerful enough to reach the BT? Is it too powerful? What do other people use (give details)??
