    18000K Tubes

i had a yarn to chris at lamp specialists today he explained a great deal to me he is on this forum (cant remember his username ) he explained that a machine tests k rating and this technology has been around sine the early 1900s , however human eyes cant see the full spectrum so a tube that is high in blue light (not all of the blue is visible) may have a high 18000k rating but appear pink to us humans because we can cant see the blue light its putting out but may see some of the red which is (in the eyes of the testing machine) a really small part of the light output. perhaps if he sees this he will explain it better than me
  3. 1/4 teaspoon of yeast in a bucket of water outside should do it
  4. in the instructions for the cf1200 it recommends that you put the spray bar across the back .this way you can make it longer wit the pieces provided, so more holes in it more water volume but at a lower velocity(the velocity of the jets will affect turbulence ). a longer spray bar (or pointed down spraybar )would be better for a planted tank as its less likely to stir the surface of the water(which drives out co2) but im assuming this is for your african tank where that wont matter possibly just using one of the spraybar attachement(the come with two that clip together to make 1 long 1) across the opposite end of the tank to the intake strainer and pointed down at the substrate in the middle of the tank to help push some of the crud towards the intake strainer.
  5. wana get me some too? those lil holes will be great for fry to hide in if you are intending to breed a few in there
  6. if you keep bb gobies and say a fig8 puffer the salinity wont need to be over 1.010 so you wont use heaps of salt if you decide to use a marine salt mix (also being only a 50 l tank) this i feel is the safest option as you dont want to introduce ane nasties into the water. however if you decide to get saltwater from the sea i dont think i would be getting it from around the port or even tahuna as the water at the port is very polluted from industy. also be aware bb gobies really need a source of live food be this daphnia, small shrimp , other small water creatures or whiteworms (a variety is best , some will take meaty dead food but it shouldnt be relied on) but congrats on deciding to start a brackish tank with a lil planning and research it will go well
  7. there is aquarium specific led lights some are meant to be suitable for reef tanks
  8. thanks lynn didnt take too long to make as the was no really detailed carving was all made with a heat gun. my cichlid tank is now a cichlid tank as i have a copadichromis borleyi "kadango" (thanks lynn) 1 male melanochromis , some jewels , and a pair of lionheads (thanks again navarre) as well as a big red spot plec and a bns and some random guppies and fry(i have too many) here is some pictures finally
  9. i remember you telling me that you were not sure about keeping tropical fish tanks as it sounded a lot harder than keeping turtles. well donna after this i think you could cope with ane tropical fish! p.s background is coming along slowly but looking very good have just got painting to do on it

    Red Worms

i have been told tiger worms excrete a bitter tasting compound when under stress and would not be suitable for my frogs. ordinary earthworms on the other hand
  11. clown loaches can do some damage fighting each other 2
  12. im sure i saw a big bottle of o2 at pet world in ferry road if you asked nicely they might let you use some
  13. you forgot the rice has to be basmati for authenticity(or jasmine if you just like the taste. my trick for cooking basmati rice as i was taught by indians: get a large microwave safe bowl (a normal bowl shape not some unusual shape) chuck the rice in , put ur hand in the bowl placing ur middle fingertip just on top of the level rice then fill with cold water up to the bottom of your little fingertip(on me this is just under 2 inches of water above the level of the rice, but people with very small or very large hands my method may not work) give it a stir add some salt and around 3/4 a tablespoon of 'jeera' (cumin seeds)
  14. http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/tr/Lila ... andiae.php try this 1 nice carpeting plant doesnt grow too big
  15. i freeze lil bits of meat(mince chicken mussel beef) in the small trays frozen blodworms come in. all the meat i use is raw when the cube are frozen i pop it in a snaplok bag and put put back in the freezer think of it as tv dinners for fish. 1 of my frogs will also eat chicken if handfed (well will eat anething if handfed, even try ur hand)

    silicon

2 reasons 1 it may have mould inhibitors which can be toxic for fish also its not reccommended for permanent immersion, take it back and swap it for the selleys glass silicone its the only sellleys 1 suitable for aquariums(says so on the back label)
  17. http://pet-supplies.drsfostersmith.com/ ... lies/Krill looks like this where i get mine cost $8.95 it lasts a while if u are feeding other foods as well
  18. its carried by insects other animals and humans(though wont affect us, we have our own version) it can travel quite fast via insect via animal etc. doesnt last long with out a host in warm weather but in cold weather can remain dormant for around a month. its quite important to avoid other people with rabbits , petshops also if you have had deaths from it as you will most likely carry it for some time afterwards also disinfect everything to do with the rabbits (a strong bleach solution is fine ) wash ane clothing or bedding used with or around rabbits also. while vaccination is a very good idea afaik there are now 3 varieties of RCD affecting rabbits and only the original 1 is vaccinated against. there are very little symptoms so if you have had 1 infected rabbit quickly vaccinate the rest and disinfect everything the vaccination takes 2 weeks to work so if the remaining rabbits are still alive after 2 weeks you are probably sweet. another note a grisly 1 at that its best to burn carcasses of ane infected dead rabbits as these are highly likely to spread it further( thhe original RCD virus is purposely transmitted to farms using infected rabbit guts and meat) plenty more info on the net if u need more
  19. tony the rabbit chewed and ate some buttons off the tv remote and lots of holes in clothing. we have a tortie cat called tigger who catches and eats flys she also has an un-natrual obbsession with bleach , if you mop the floors she is there rolling round in it purring like its catnip everytime
  20. some of the finer 1s can be pretty hard to grow in gravel especially if there is a koura to pull them out
  21. a bit off topic i know but for ur puffers have you tried tetra minikrill from packet: min 62% protein!"complete organisms, includinding the shell, are an excellent source of protein and roughage for all tropical and marine fish. my puffer loves it so does my bumblebee gobies (even my freshwater burmese bumblebee gobies which are bout 8-9mm long and normally only eat daphnia and occaisional bloodworm)
  22. they are a type of cruststaion (not correct spelling i know) so would be great for ur puffers yum yum nice and crunchy
