    "Ocean Rock"

ask bob at redwood hes been around for a while might know if you can still get it
  2. you can get get a natural black gravel(not resin coated) from bunnings in small bags
  3. having seen them before i can vouch its pretty impressive also the biggest filter ive ever seen . see you guys there
  4. Sex: Male Name: tim Age: 24 engaged
  5. its been adult size for quite a while now
  6. i just noticed i have a new male too i wonder if it will be sterile like the original male (lyretail/sailfin cross) its certainly gunna look interesting when its sailfin develops as it has a lyretail as well it would have only been male for a week
  7. so its basically a custom top filter i made a small 1 out of a klip klap container and im using an ar 620 top filter sitting on top of my goldfish tank . if you made a hood up for the tank it could even be disquised easily
  8. i find acrilyic easy to cut with a jigsaw you just have to take ur time and use a fine blade not a wood one. if you go too fast you will end up melting it instead of cutting it and the melted sections will glue back together straight after the blade slides past and will leave a rough edge when u snap it
  9. you dont need a really huge tank to keep them why not buy a small tank and put in a divider and have the best of both worlds. i have been told by people if you can get them to feed ur doin well im not sure but i get the feeling that they are slow growing as well
  10. thanks i seen a close relative of my kadango in the tank where the yellow came from this one was a lot larger and way more colour but my 1 will get that way eventually. i had another look you may not be wrong there he is chasing away every other fish except the big yellow male even the guppies lol hasnt chased anething before . the other fish seem to being staying out of his way
  11. i added an electric yellow today from my4age instantly the melanochromis from the pictures in my other posts coloured up and started shaking in front of the yellow to assert its territory i have caught it on video
  12. a hydrometer is a good idea but dont be too worried about keeping it bang on the salinity you want .in a natural brackish enviroment the salinity changes all the time with tides etc ,as long as you keep it between 1.000 and 1.010 . but bare in mind salty water evaporates faster than freshwater and a full tank at 1.010 will quickly be 1.015 in a few days (tank volume dependant also)
  13. mine will take lil bits of flake but i wouldnt reccomend using it as a regular thing . i feed mine minikrill or daphnia and sometimes tubifex and bloodworms. they will start growing if you are feeding them right mine are about an inch long now
  14. i think the fish in question is a beautiful fish(even more so if it had of been the real thing) . hybrids are bound to show up at some stage and yes it would have been better if it wasnt sold as something else. i dont really agree with culling hybrids unless its the last resort - i mean known hybrid fry can be fed to something and i think you have done the right thing here by giving them to living art for a display tank , as there is plenty of people out there like me who dont have a huge interest in breeding (im slowly stocking a male only display tank) that would still have an interest in a colourful hybrid! on another note im wondering arent a lot of hybrids sterile ? , im thinking like a mule or i have sailfin mollies crossed with black lyretail the male i have is sterile
  15. 1.005 isnt much to raise it by you could do that in a week i keep mine inbetween that and 1.010(i have a puffer as well . by the way that is a very good photo ive found mine really hard to photograph
  16. is the queens gardens where the eel walk is(behind the courthouse)? they have ponds in there that were originally made just for eels but the ducks seem to be the main attraction. the supposed geographical centre of new zealand is also in nelson a bit of a hike up a hill but worth the veiw
  17. kaiteri is a bit of a drive tho bout 1 and half hrs . nelson has tahuna beach oh and i also forgot natureland (if it hasnt closed down yet) its a small zoo with a braindamaged monkey called ricky well worth it the admission fee is really cheap too
  18. mapua touch the sea aquarium its a 30min drive from nelson . afaik there is 1 petshop in nelson and 2 in richmond. you could also drive up the top of the port hills and take in the view of the harbour
  19. those pictures are pretty amazing he has had some real practise since the first 1 he made. i find using paint easier and cheaper than epoxy now but the sand doesnt stick to the paint anewhere near as well as it does to epoxy and the epoxy is a lot stronger (a must if its for turtles or lizards with claws) i used a waterbased epoxy in previous backgrounds i made its called equis epistixx clear (eqquis is on fiztgerald ave) its slighty cheaper than other epoxies and you can mix in paint(acrylic artist or house) to colour it so this would save using different coloured sands while also giving you a wider range of colours (see the red and black background in my old goldfish tank). i recently made a background for a friends frog tank that didnt use ane sand and has a reasonable rock effect too riversand ($6 a big sack at oderings) has fine particles all the way up to small bits of gravel and can be used to great effect on its own another method is to use expanding foam instead of polystyrene i have more information about that if you would like just let me know all in all if you have patience and with careful planning you can get the results you are after .
  20. mite be able to get a skimmer to fit in the box off ebay or something and for ligthing you could possibly fit a 70w metal halde(fan cooled) in there
  21. the best thing ive found to feed to tadpoles is boiled lettuce cant say ive tried tomato that could be part of your problem as some tomatoes are rather acidic. are your frogs brown or green?
  22. glosso is a new zealand native it can be hard to come by even here in new zealand. its sought after all over the world for aquariums
