    Spiky Thingies

Vermetid snails? I have them all over my tank.
  2. Oooh, good point. How about lifejackets? Most are made of foam. Prickles can't pop foam.
  3. You'll just need to put a bunch of little water wings next to the pond and a sign saying, "Please use before entering the pool."
  4. I'd just like to comment that I've always gotten good service in Redwood the handful of times I've been there. But their hardware is pretty expensive, like the DIY looking dual 175watt SE MH unit the guy there offered to me for $2K.
  5. I don't know if you can really call it cruel. I don't think they have a central nervous system to feel pain. And it's not any "crueller" than breaking branches off SPS or cutting pieces off soft corals. I doubt a rubber band would be a good idea. Like Steve says, it'd probably slip off and if you had it tight enough it doesn't it would probably do a LOT more damage than a nice clean cut by tearing its way through. Almost garauntee it would be a fatal injury. Edit #3: Oh, and I WANT ONE OF THOSE! GIMMEGIMMEGIMME!
  6. I'd like to build a concrete pond in our courtyard. But the wifey says, "There's not enough room!"
  7. Haha, I had do that. It was on the sand so I picked it up along with a little clump of sand. So I was walking to the sink and it jumps at me to try and eat me! Fortunately it was weighed down by the sand and went splat onto the carpet instead...Was a big bugger too. Like an inch across.
  8. Ah...Ok, yeah, if it's being force fed by a pump with the outlet restricted it would be pressurized a little bit. Still only be a couple PSI.
  9. Don't bother with gro-lux tubes or anything, imo. Just go for cool white tubes, 6500ish kelvin.
  10. The fireplace will have little effect on the temperature of the glass or silicone. There is FAR too much water in contact with it for it to warm up more than a fraction of a degree more than the water. The concern would be the heating up of the water and maybe overheating the fish.

Thing looks the size of a wheelie bin...
  12. But, you said you don't have a pump forcefeeding the reactor. Just the overflow, right? Then the only pressure you'd have is the head pressure from the tank. Given the height of yours that would be a couple PSI. That's the only pressurization in the calcium reactor. A pump circulating the water inside the reactor isn't going to make any difference.
  13. I'd thought of the calcium reactor idea. They're pretty well sealed, Chim. I'm not sure they'd handle massive amounts of pressure, but I think they should probably hold maybe 10 PSI.

    Magnesium

I've got a bag of dolomite, average size sandwich bag worth. Real fine powdery stuff. Picked it up from a livestock feed store. Don't remember exactly what I got it for. :-? Don't know if you'd want to use it for a marine tank, but you're welcome to it, Pies if you want it.
  15. I was thinking, since I'm not using my two FR-304s right now for phosphate remover or carbon. What other things could they be used for? 1. Fill it with kalk and put a trickle(Very small trickle) of water through it from my return pump and make it sort of a kalk stirrer. 2. Itty bitty teeny refugium. Any other thoughts?

    Adding fish

Or less light and regular feeding. Or even better, heaps of light and regular feeding.

    Adding fish

    Most anemones love light.

    watts vs inches

For just fish 15W will be enough. For planted, no.

    Sad looking tank

I was gone for 2 weeks.
  20. I'm kinda wondering if I have one in the left side rocks in my tank. Or something anyway. I was a bit suspicious when my mushroom leather(Looking ok, btw!) kept falling over onto the sand despite being pretty secure. But I thought it wasn't likely. When I got home from vacation I found it had moved around and was wedged up in space between two rocks about 6 inches from where it was before.
  21. Hehe, "quite magical". At least you can't accuse him of lying. It must be magic.

    Sad looking tank

At the moment I'm inclined to just give up on corals and make it a FOWLR. Maybe when I start feeling a bit more optimistic I'll take you up on that offer, Suphew. Thanks.

    Sad looking tank

Well, I'm back from my trip. My green octopus coral is totally dead, my hammer is tan hammer is almost dead, green hammer totally dead, a few scraps of xenia left, my euphyllia coral is covered in dead patches, my brain is looking bleached, one of my finger leathers is covered in cyano, another is all shriveled up. Cyano everywhere and my housesitter says, "Were the lights supposed to be turning off?" It looks like when I reset the timer to cut a few hours off I accidentally switched the timer to "On" instead of "Auto"
  24. I found mine to be exactly 1°c higher than all the other thermometers, but other than that offset seemed to work perfectly up until it fell in the tank.
