  1. Try covering the venturi hose with your finger and see if that stops the noise. Since that's the only thing that might make a loud whine like a 747 sounds like when it's landing. From the ground anyway, otherwise they're usually pretty quiet.

    additives

Leave it on. There's no reason to turn it off.
  3. *Twitch*Twitch* plumBing PlumBing plumBing! Sorry. What are those two black hoses for in the second picture? They seem a bit high for something like a return hose.

    Power outage

Today it was from 12:30-1:20. Called them up and asked why, "No idea."

    New Flow

I have one. Well, it's a PJ5000 which is the pond version, but it's the same just a longer cord and different attachments come with it. Anyway, all it makes is a faint hum which is easily drowned out by all the other noises in the tank.
  6. When you get it, Suphew, we should get you to collect water and then deliver it to everyone around Wellington to fill up their supply. Actually now that I've mentioned it, that's not a bad idea, you could probably supply like 3 people. I'd be happy to pay you a fair price for the water and your time.

    Power outage

So far we've had power cuts every day since friday. this tuesday it was another hour long one. The others were just little blips of a few seconds. This is getting Swearing Removed (Bill .. Mod) ridiculous.

    Power outage

A 300 watt inverter is way more than the cost of the generator. And an idling car's alternator won't put out enough amps.
  9. One way is to put the intake in one tank and the outlet in the second tank then run a big hose siphoning between the two. You'd have to make sure the tanks are at the same level first of course, but then the hose would automatically work to keep the tanks water levels equal. So, water would flow from the outlet take to the intake tank.

    Power outage

Yeah, it's not temp I'm worried about, I forgot to plug my tank's heater back in after I did a water change yesterday. It took from about 7pm-6am for the temp to drop from about 26.5 to 24 where the low temp alarm goes off. Circulation and aeration is what I want it for. So I hope to run the FW tanks cannister filters and the marine's return pump.

    Rock Formations

Putting a layer of liverock along the back would probably be the ideal way, like you said. But will be kinda pricy, YOu'd probably need something like 30 kilos I'd guess.

    Power outage

We had a power outage yesterday, lasted about an hour and a half, power company said it would probably be 4-6 hours before the power comes back. I gave it an hour and then I decided to set up the generator, got all the tanks plugged into the generator and it up and running. Took me half an hour to do that...So as anyone that's good at math can see the power came on about exactly as I got everything running. Strangely the generator, just a little gmc one from bunnings, dies if I have all the tanks plugged into it even though they're under the 550 watt continuous rating. I might have needed to let it warm up a bit more first though. Not a big deal if I need to let it warm up for more than a minute or two before plugging everything into it.
  13. Hmm, Most of the suggestions I've seen suggested using pretty low heat on the wire and making slow cuts. That way you get less overburn(Foam around the wire melted instead of just what's in contact with it) But I've been looking mroe for cutting out parts for RC planes and I'd imagine precision is a lot more important than speed.
  14. Perhaps, but the real question is, could the Wright brothers have taken off from a conveyer belt?
  15. The acidity of the peat would counteract the alkalinity of the cement, to some amount anyway. Go give it a try and report back, Jude.
  16. How long of a wire and how hot were you using? I'd only need something to get a wire maybe 6" long nice and hot. I think though when I get around to it I'll give the electric blanket transformer a try. Seems the cheapest place to get a transformer.
  17. hey, Weka, what kind of wattage are you getting from your transformer? I've had someone suggest that an electric blanket transformer would work well, but there are a lot of cheap 25ish watt 12v electric light transformers but that might be a bit weak? I want to set up a hot wire cutter but I'm not sure what kind of wattage I should look for.
  18. I think the finger test is a crap way to test the tank temperature. Well, unless my thermometers read really low in the winter and my tanks are actually spa water temp, but read too high in the summer when my tanks are actually cold.
  19. Just wave the gravel siphon around, you don't have to uproot everything to do it.
  20. hmmm, something like that valve combined with a scwd or a wavemaker might make a good cheap oceansmotion.
  21. You can also ship them airport to airport with Air NZ. I think that's the quickest way if you don't mind dropping them off at the airport and the other person doesn't mind picking them up. Would only be a few hours that way. Bit more expensive that way, maybe.
  22. I think there's a lawnmower blenny and a bicolor blenny somewhere that have some serious explaining to do!
  23. Those little balls aren't mercury and they aren't used to push the alcohol up. They're little balls of iron or steel. They're used to weigh down the bottom so the thermometer floats vertically.
