I tried catching a bunch of little bullies? from a river near here. They died in a couple days. I think too much ammonia built up in the little tank, even though there were only half a dozen tiny little fry. I guess I shouldn't have tried to feed them a variety of food.

I actually looked at using peltiers. The problem is that, just like all other cooling devices, the greater the difference in temperature between in this case, the water and the heat sink the less cooling. The prices I saw it was somewhere around $200 US for a 300W peltier and if I remember right assuming a really good heatsink on the hot side you'd only be drawing out something like 100watts or less. So, you'd need 3 to get 300 watts.

Hmmm, I'm sure I remember reading that car ACs are designed to have the air leaving the AC unit at somewhere a few degrees above freezing. Might be wrong though.

I wonder how he meant, not suitable? If he's a professional to him not suitable might have meant for a high price, high load system. I have heard of people using jury rigged air conditioners and similar equipment...You'd really only need something sucking about 300 watts max out of the water, so even if the AC isn't working very efficiently because it's out of its temperature range it should be able to handle that. An actual aquarium chiller would cost less than 3000, I think.
  5. I think in the case of Parrots they're not worried about producing a fertile fish. They just take a severum and a red devil or whatever they use and start again with a big batch.

    NAME THAT FISH!

Am I brightly colored? (Ie Red, Gold instead of more greyish or silver)
  7. I've only managed, other than guppies:) to breed a couple bristlenoses. About a year ago I was looking into the tank in the middle of the night. It's full of south american cichlids and a male and female bristlenose, and thought I must be hallucinating when I saw a little itty bitty bristlenose. He'd survived in there long enough to get to about half-3/4 inch long. He must have died eventually though. Then maybe 6 months ago I happened to look into the tank and saw a little cluster of orange eggs drifting around the bottom. Grabbed them out, floated them in a glass container in another tank along with an airstone and some anti-fungal stuff. Got 4 fry, only 1 still alive, but she(I think) is big enough I think it'll live for a while. It's in with the tetras now.

    Am I a cichlid?
  9. How stupid is it to say, "Because we don't like them, they can not be discussed." How about diseases? Should we not discuss them because we don't like them? How about Discus? I think discus are more trouble than they're worth. So any mention of them should be banned from the board. And feeding fish live food is cruel, any mention of live food should be banned too. What about things like Betta vases? They're cruel, so we shouldn't be able to talk about them either.

    Guppies

I've got a bunch, no guarantees on quality or anything though, since I've basically just got them because I was pissed at my Bristlenoses for NOT breeding.

Why no copper in contact with the water? Such a tiny amount would dissolve in the water, even if it is a little toxic, it wouldn't have any effect. Lots of plumbing is copper, I believe.

A car's AC wouldn't be 12 volt. They run off the belt on the engine. You might be able to rig up reasonable sized electric motor and connect it to the compressor. NOt sure about the rest of what would need done.
  13. Well...Guess I'll have to try finding the Maidstone Center in the daytime and make it to next month's meeting. Because I couldn't find it tonight. Drove back and forth on Goodshed road 4-5 times looking for something saying "Maidstone center" never found it. Found some Orongai mondo muktuk center or something like that. I was looking forward to it too.
  14. AUGH! It wanted me to log in after I hit the submit button and didn't post my message. Gotta see if I can remember what I typed. He was originally in a tank full of tetras. When we first got him he was quite active, he'd swim up and down the tank about 3 feet, it's a tall hex. A few months ago he started just hanging around at the top. The PH in the tank had gotten up nearly to 8 so I thought maybe he didn't like it and put him into the tank with the cichlids because its PH is around 7. They must be pretty unintimidating, they're geophaguses, severums, electric blue and yellows, silver sharks...Even the tiny little juvenile blue ram isn't intimidated. He seems to be getting enough to eat and has gotten more active in that tank. BUt he still just hangs around the top. I did notice yesterday that he swam an inch or so below the surface and then bobbed back up. Don't know if that was the current, intentional or if he's got something like a swim bladder problem. I did try to breed him. Unfortunately we didn't get any eggs, they tried though. Don't know if the female was too old or what.
  15. I've got a betta! He's blue and seems to be acting like an old man, how long do they live, anyway? Seems to be living happily with my cichlids even though they all outweigh him by at least 20 times...Except for the little juvenile blue ram.
  16. Hmmm, Blue fish...I've only got 3(Unless I count the 40 or so guppy fry)...Nah, not going to throw my poor electric blue into a bag and take him with me. But I will try to be there tomorrow.
  17. Where and when are the meetings? I'm interested in going to one and having a look at what's happening.
