    Just curious!

If they were still swimming around I'd say odds are they'd be fine with a good water change and clean up. Why the hell did they say it wasn't a good idea to have friends look after the fish? Oh yes, I understand, it's a FAR better idea to kill a living creature simply because you can't be bothered with a few minutes with a net and some buckets.
  2. Hey, Chim, Cracker, Misnoma and I were wondering earlier, how are those zoanthid frags you guys got off me doing? Mine are all dead.
  3. The PH in the tank would naturally be higher with just plants and no fish. But not 8+ high. I'd suggest you retest it first.
  4. Haha, going on the same track as Slappers is headed, you need to put a nice beige plastic case around it and set it up to play MP3s and run a marine tank. Then we'll call it the AmphI-pod. :bounce: You'll get rich!
  5. Yeah, 6 is a bit low. Not a huge immediate worry, but pick up some bird grit, I prefer the coarser stuff if you can, and just throw a handful in your filter and it should bring the PH up a bit.
  6. Without knowing the PH, it might be ok, not worth worrying about anyway. But in general you can throw a sack of bird grit into the filter, it's just crushed oyster shells and slowly raises the PH. Works well.
  7. That specific brand of super glue is bad or superglue in general? Because...Well...Superglue is probably the second or third most common thing used to attach corals, short of rubber bands and string.

    Fish Cleaning

Well, if your fish start getting algae growing on them then at least one fish is all set to be cleaned.

    log book

Here's the one I use for an example starting point. Only for tracking tests, not other details. homepages.paradise.net.nz/bpresant/fish/tests example.xls Filled it up with dummy info.

    log book

I just use MS excel, just punch in the date and the test results and it automatically updates a couple graphs I have set up. Now, if I actually tested regularly it might be useful.
  12. You do NOT want to remove the glass that blocks the UV. Plants don't use much UV anyway, and not in the spectrum that a DE metal halide produces. Now, if you want to give everything in your tank a killer sunburn, feel free, but you might get a better effect using a UV sterilizer lamp.
  13. I wouldn't bother with trying to use sunlight for heating. If it's cold enough to need much heating you probably don't have strong enough sunlight. Better off insulating the tank and the room it's in. Sunlight for lighting the tank though would be good.

    Forceps

No, you use Joes Juice on babies. Gotta do it early before they get really expensive attach themselves to other livestock in your house...
  15. You'll never find a car battery charger that puts out 48-72 volts. They all put out a peak of somewhere around 14 volts. You try putting 48 volts into a 12 volt car battery and you'll end up with a nice crater in the ground. Or at the very least a destroyed battery.
  16. What? No they don't. Car alternators produce DC.
  17. If you don't have it plugged in you'll end up reducing the total flow through the system, turn it on and the eheim will be force fed and you'll get higher flow. All for maybe 10 watts.
  18. In general 6500K will be better for growth because, in general, you get a higher PAR the lower the kelvin...Generally...Specific bulbs of different brands and qualities of higher kelvins might be better than lower quality lower kelvin brands...

    Power outage

Hmmm, I vaguely remember something about them trying to run more power lines up to Auckland and everyone whining like little girls about it. Sounds like it's partially self inflicted to me. And anyway, it sounds like most of you guys weren't out for that long.
  20. So what's the dip in PH going to be? Somewhere around .00Fall. Seriously as long as you're not adding massive amounts at once does it really matter if the PH dips a barely measurable amount for half an hour?
  21. Even if she loves them, she could have walked by the tank grumpy and her bad vibes killed them.:
  22. My tank uses up a teaspoon or so of baking soda per day.
  23. Lots of possibilities, no way to know for sure. Possibly the water change was a bit too much stress for them, water temp off, too much chlorine etc. Possibly there were traces of pesticides on the cucumber. Maybe someone walked past the tank in a grumpy mood.
  24. Cories don't eat algae. Ottos or bristlenoses should work.

    MH on timer

Just go to bunnings, have a look at timers, grab something priced near the middle of the range you'll probably be fine. The only ones I've had trouble with is the dirt cheap ones that were something like $5, stuck shut the first time it switched on. Everything else has been fine.
