  1. Maybe we hold it at the pub! Sign up some drunks! Cummon You Lot Pull Ya Finger Out
  2. "Oooh you should see my new GBS" Will it catch on?
  3. Hmm Name: Ancistris Shortassus? Common Name: Golden Black eyed Stumpy?
  4. I was told that they don't do well singly  Anyway I got all 3 for $120, because their whiskers had been nipped (they had better grow back!) which was a pretty good price I thought
  5. I am just back from a wee visit to LFS I am now the proud daddy of 3 Pictus I just have to figure out how I explain it to my darling wife
  6. Really should check what I write before posting
  7. Not really my place to post this but I feel we needed a prod. Its that time of the year AGM TIME! I'm pretty new to the club but I can see that unless people get off their respective butts and attend this important meeting we stand a good chance of slipping into decline. Come along have your say on the direction of the club over the next year. I'm sure one of the committee will see this and post some details so you old bloods and forum lurkers can attend. Cheers Owen
  8. I was getting worried about mine not eating...not losing weight but got concerned, so I moved him to a 3' tank on his own. from the amount of poo in there I neednt have worried. Im going to teach him to hand feed before I put him back in with my cichlids, that way I can be sure he's getting some good food not just left overs. Mine is a little paler in the middle of his body too, but he/shes still purty, and substrate colour makes him change a little I've noticed too. Good luck with Belial :bounce:
  9. FYI All particle boards are not created equal MDF medium density fibre board is the plain old stuff that looks like cardboard. HMR High Moisture Retention is the green particle board you will see in most good quality stands, this is the same stuff that is used in bathroom cabinets etc, it is wax impregnated and will handle moisture much better than MDF but will still turn to weetbix if it gets a really good soaking. Malteca and formica is the laminate that gets put on the board to make it look nice.
  10. Yeah I have sliding shelves in my 5' stand and they are going in on my new 3' stand, they are awesome and well worth it if you are going to the effort of getting cabinetry made...or if your old man has a Joinery Factory...thx Dad. Phosphate remover in a semi planted? educate me as to why? is your tank highly stocked? Anyway nice work
  11. Looks like a good effort to my untrained eye. Join the Waikato Aquarium club, we have just had a tank crawl and could have had a really critical look at it. We have em about every 6 months so join up and we will see you soon Owen
  12. Very Nice. IMHO a closed in light hood finishes a tank off much better than a glass top. I love your fancy plecs...one day
  13. Urban legend says that Superglue was developed for field surgery during the Vietnam war. It actually needs a some moisture to set, humidity is usually enough. I am a suppository of useless information. Thats right suppository, I'm a pain in the A**e
  14. :bounce: yay put me down for some when they are big enough to share.
  15. I just set my 5' cichlid tank up in sand, the fish love it, spend all day rooting around and digging holes. Goodbye gravel, I am gonna use nothing else now

  17. Does anyone know if there is a vet in Hamilton who knows about fish?
  18. Blasphemy!
  19. yeah it needs to be almost touch dry, roll a cloth across the surface and it will stipple the surface.
  20. I agree with you David as far as the American/African compatability. David is an experienced cichlid keeper, and has a good feel for what species can be mixed and matched. As a novice IMO it is better to keep it simple, select fish that are from the same general area/conditions, get those guys stable, learn their quirks before experimenting. I have Africans living with Americans happily in my tank, but have had to cull out others due to aggression, I am also concerned that my Jeweled keeps trying to mate with a Nicaraguan  but its interesting to watch.
  21. I assume the same would apply to other live bearers. I isolate (to another tank)my females when looking on the bigger side I wonder at what of the pregnancy sex is determined? Fish can be funny re changing sex...anyone know/hazard a guess?
  22. :bounce: Well My 5' is up and running complete with new background, a clear coat of epoxy did the trick as my fish are ALIVE! :bounce: Wife has camera so will post pics of completed setup as soon as I can wrestle it off her. I found the yellow of the epoxy top coat actually enhanced the look in the end, and I dry ragged the last coat when it was still just tacky. that killed the sheen nicely.
