  1. I am just getting into cichlids myself, here's what I'd suggest if starting to plan a tank. 1st step choose American or African, its just too hard to try and mix em the PH's are too different. IMO Africans are prettier but more aggressive. Americans are not so vibrant but have a bit more character and as a very general rule are not too aggressive unless breeding be aware of the adult sizes of the fish you get. Convicts are common as dirt, females are prettier and (some) have orange patches on their stomachs. they breed like crazy so unless you really want to breed em I'd just stick with 1 sex. I know nothing about specific Africans so I wont comment
  2. Heres what I did when I had major recurring ich outbreaks. 25% water change Dosed with formalin and white spot cure, followed up with another dose of white spot cure in 3 days. 25% water change in 10 days took out 1/2 filter media cleaned in hot tap water and added to another filter in another tank. white spot cure wait 3 days No spots? Emptied tank cleaned gravel 1/2 filled with water from other tanks washed filter+media added reactivated filter media from other tank topped up with fresh water. acclimatised fishies no white spot since (3? months later tank is sweet) Good luck
  3. As above. The energy saver lamp is just a miniature fluorescent lamp so go for it.
  4. Take the thing back to the engineering w/shop you got it made at and get them to straighten it, if you paid for it it has to be right! If it was me I'd just put a bit of ply and poly on it and fill her up.
  5. I have had 3 Ehiem's of diff models and a fluval, all sweet by me. as far as hose disconnection Id go with my new Ehiem professional II You can easily adjust the flow and has a little flow indicator which makes it easy. about $400 for my latest model but thats for a 375l tank
  6. Depends a lot on how heavily planted your tank is really IME lots of fine leafed plants and moss and they will be mostly fine. Do put a stocking over your filter inlet for a few weeks if using a power/canister filter as they will get sucked in.
  7. I too am having troubles keeping my babies alive, they just disapear after a few weeks, surely the adults aren't eating them? I now have them in a separate tank with some baby platies, lets see how they go this time.
  8. Correct, and use hot soapy water (it has waxes and oils in it too that will need to be broken down so they can be washed away), just rinse well.
  9. Definately GB ancestrus eyes look blueish but nothing special
  10. Im going in this morning and will check it out, get some photos etc, Stand by.
  11. World of water is the place and cant remember price, there are a couple of ways to ID them(blue eyed plecos) so I have discovered, shape of teeth and a flap of skin in mouth. From planet catfish The Genus Panaque is identified by the teeth, which are spoon-shaped. This means that the teeth are noticeably wider at the tip than at the base. Other loricariidae have teeth that are similar width all the way from one end to the other. A second distinguishing feature is the lack of a buccal papilla, which is a "flap of skin" on the inside of the mouth. these guys grow to 300mm too id be interested if Blue or another catfishy knows anything about a golden variety
  12. Well my supplier has egg on his face, the manufacturer of the paint says NO but it may just be a ass covering thing, Im clear coating with epoxy and am going to trial the paint with some sacrificial fish I was going to cull, stand by for update
  13. Anyone heard of em? LFS has some the eyes do look more blue than black, I have searched and cant find anything on them. Maybe they are a mutation of Panaque cochliodon? or maybe mislabeled? they are still small so i dunno
  14. Gee I hope so, my supplier was pretty sure it was fine, but Im getting him to contact the chemist from the manufacturer, the suff I used was a 1 pack polyurethane, and I was damm sure it was sweet stand by you have got me doubting myself now  As for detailed photos, I didn't do any progress photos sorry but it was pretty simple... I cant see myself making a million from the process so I'll have to settle for fame instead 8) I could do a how to for you Caryl, lets make sure I'm not poisoning my fish first

What I have done is applied epoxy resin to the poly 3 coats approx, then painted with marine paint Start with a dark colour and dry brush a lighter colour over the top, sexy Background Done http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh29 ... ank003.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh29 ... ank002.jpg http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh29 ... ank001.jpg The finished product
  17. Tannins are good for the fish! I have had a massive bit of bogwood in my tank for 3 weeks at first it was really dark, but now its lightened up heaps and every water change helps. Just let it be and time will sort out the colour

    My GBA babies

Sweet, im trying to get my GBA's to breed atm, and in a coconut cave too...do you have a base on yours? and do you think the hole on top is a better option? I have a small opening at the base in mine
  19. Clown Loaches are prone to a "wasting" disease, google it and you will see what I mean. Apparently its a parasitic thing I lost all of mine within 3-4 weeks of getting em. Its put me off clowns forever, Go Striata Loaches
  20. Personally I've gone for Striata(Zebra) loaches in my semi planted as they don't get so big, will keep the snails under control & are nowhere as fragile as clowns. Gourami's love semi planted and are very cool for a passive community type fish.
  21. Yar Mine did that a month ago for a few days, they are sweet as
