  1. My ph test kit only goes down to 6 and that is what the results show. So my ph is 6 or less
  2. I had a bit of a play with the aquascaping today. I got 4-5 feet semi done and managed to murk up the water a bit. I'm not entirely happy with it yet but this is where I got to.
  3. Not at the moment, once this tank is up and running I will have a spare 4 footer and 5 footer that I have already have earmarked for pleco's. But if ive learnt anything since ive been keeping fish it is to never say never
  4. I wasn't going to post pics yet as it is still a work in progress. The sump is a mess, the difusser for the wet/dry is not yet installed. the filter media is not properly contained, the lights, hood and doors are not on yet, not to mentaion the aquascaping is not done and the fact that wife has put a horrible plastic plant in it as well as a couple of angels. It has a 160L sump, an 8000lph pump and the fish that i plan to add are 2 x ornates, 2x talking cats, 1x fire eel, 1 x BGK, 1 x plec and 1x oscar overflow sump before wet/dry Shells Wifes horrible plastic bits overview
  5. I spent last weekend setting up my new 8 footer and sump etc etc. I wanted a heap of shells in the sump for buffering, minerals etc as we are on rain water. I kept approx 20L of pipi shells from a recent hunt and gather and after we ate the pipi's i added the shells to the sump. The remaining meat and skirt was left on the shells and is now starting to decompose in the tank. After one week I now have an ammonia level of 1.2ppm. Its looking good for a fishless cycle. Comments and advice appreciated. Cheers P.S I decided on the "herbie" system to keep the overflow noise to a minimum and I am really impressed with the outcome. Has anyone else used this system ? http://dinardiengineering.com:80/blog/?p=34
  6. I will stab enough to make me a pattie one day. I hear they taste just like whitebait.
  7. Well done :bounce: I had a couple show up the other day too.
  8. For sale: Golden apple snails that don't eat plants (yet). $100 each
  9. I'm not sayting that it wont happen but it hasn't happened in 2-3 months Here is the proof
  10. I've got 10 golden apple snails in a 70L tank which is mainly a growing on tank for some of my whiptails. Anywho there is a clump of amazon sword and a clump of java moss in the tank and the snails haven't touched them. They dive onto the trout pellets that are meant for the fish thou.
  11. 500L tank $100 in the buy sell swap stand $90 on TM Gravel, sand rocks and wood free from local river, 2x cf1200 filters $230 new an old 5 foot flouro from work for free. Total $420 dont ask about the new 8 footer and stand, sump, lights etc.. It would have beeen cheaper to buy a good reliable car
  12. Ive got 4 of them now and I cant speak too highly of them. I have never seen a heater keep a tank at it's set point so well. We need an importer to get hold of these and make them readily available to the public.
  13. I have no problem with the fish in the bath or the cow in the truck/pen/slaughterhouse. I would just like it if people could be consistent with their argument/discussion. Cow, Fish, Sheep, Oyster, etc. There is no difference when logic and realism are applied and emotion is removed.
  14. Funny, I thought that is exactly what happens when they are sent to the works.
  15. And im sure all these objectors dont eat farmed meat of any sort
  16. I can just see one of these across my lounge ceiling :bounce: http://thecontaminated.com/pipeline-fish-tank/
  17. Yeah do it now. But knowing you, you will drag this on for days and keep us all in suspenders.
  18. Agreed. and has Cambodian lineage
  19. Ok, So this is what I do and it works well for me. Having said that, I'm sure that others may disagree or have other solutions. As for buffering (and also adding minerals as a beneficial side effect). I try to make sure that each tank has some substrate or rock feature with a good calcium/limestone content. I have found that the amount buffering that i get from this alone is not enough when i factor in weekly 20% water changes so i also add shells or shell grit to each tank or sump or canister filter to help take up the slack. My PH still never gets over 7.2 but i no longer have the wild swings that i used to get. To help with the mineral deficiency I use a trace element mix that I get at a really good price from HaNs. Just a sprinkle every water change. I'm sure that its not the perfect solution for the perfectionists out there but my water parameters are now way more stable, my fish are happier and it all cost next to nothing.
  20. Thanks guy's, We fell in love with it as soon as we saw it and just had to have it. It already had 30,000 litres of rain water storage tanks but I added another 50,000 litres of capacity because of the number kids and fish tanks that we have. Having the rain water is great but it does have it's draw backs, mainly it's low mineral content and lack of buffering capability both of which we have to compensate for but is relatively easy to do without chemicals and expensive lfs products.
  21. This is one of my two being delivered
  22. So this isnt one of yours then? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painted_fish
  23. uh-oh I've got a strange feeling that the inside of the tank got painted
