  1. Decided to get 1kg coz it was cheap. not to mention the new 8 footer that is about to arrive that i intend to dose with trace element mix every water change a well as the oscar tank (5 ft)
  2. Thanks To HaNs I now have 1kg of trace element mix. I am not sure of its elemental make up (perhaps HaNs could post it here) The next trick is to work out a dose rate per litre I am open to suggestions. All I know is that it wont be much.
  3. Cant help sorry, She could easily have been egg bound in some way, You have my sympathies, I would hate to loose any of my dwarf plecs.
  4. I have a feather that accelerates at the same rate. It's for sale and i'm open to offers
  5. there is a leopard frog pleco on the auction site at the moment that looks similar
  6. just as long as it doesn't croak permanently
  7. Wow. It looks very similar to my clown pleco's L104 and i read they are often misidentified as clowns. Very nice fish.
  8. I was told that organism in Ch-Ch had one recently. I dont know if they still have it but it may be worth a phone call.
  9. I thought the tap on the sump inlet may be handy for maintanence but its not really needed and as you say it could cause problems or a blockage. Good idea about the input going into the first media cavity. It will give me more space for overflow. Cheers
  10. I am working on a sump design for the new 8 footer that is going in my lounge. I have made the sump intake below the sump water level to reduce noise and thought that if I use a larger pump than needed I could restrict the output with a tap and refilter/re airate the excess water. This is what I have come up with so far and would appeciate your feedback. Cheers.
  11. Thanks very much HaNs, I have PM'ed you
  12. Ok. Another bright idea was to use some PMDD. Of couse it's not a planted tank but PMDD does contain many trace elements.
  13. I have a river water supply that is piped to the house but only ever use it for the fish tanks when rain water gets low (once or twice a year) The water is very good quality as it is pumped to our house only a few hundred meters from the rivers source at the base of the takaka hill. the only reason that i haven't used it more was for fear of parasites. Perhap's I should try using this water in the oscar tank?
  14. Thanks Conch, As I am on rain water i knew that my water was very soft and may be a cause of the problem. I am slowly trying to harden my water and add minerals buy gradually adding crushed oyster shells. I will add snails to his diet, worm him and look into increasing the trace elements.
  15. Thanks Ira, I have just had a great chat with Peter at Port Nicholson Glass. He is sending me down some dessign options and a few photo's
  16. OK so my Oscar is starting to show signs of HITH, his diet consists of prawn, ox heart, cichlid sticks and trout pallets. After reading your vigorous discussion I am a bit confused as to how to treat him. 1) add to his diet? 2) use Metro? 3 use Droncit? He is in a very well filtered 5 footer with stable water parameters.
  17. 7x2x2 is about what i am looking at. I have talked with Tim at Inside oceans. He can build me a suitable tank at a good price but no longer has any contact with a good cabinet maker.
  18. Yeah, I had thought that I may need to employ the services of a good cabinet maker as well as a tank builder but was hoping that someone in N.Z may do both
  19. OK. So M.T.S has got to the point where 1,2,3,4 and 5 foot tanks are great for breeding, growing on and bio type tanks but I need a large main display tank. What I need is a tank that that is a least a 7 footer but because this is going to be my main display tank in the lounge I want an exquisite cabinet and hood to go with it. Freight and price are not my main concern for the perfect tank. Who can I find to help me with this project? Cheers
  20. I breed mine in a 70L 2 footer and remove 50-60% of the young to a growing on tank at around 2cm. I works well for me.
  21. Here are a couple of quick pics of mine. Thanks again mr pleco
  22. I just grabbed one of these on the auction site for a fraction of the retail price and recon that it might be a great thing. Has anyone else had experience with these. http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/cata ... 36&catID=7
  23. I don't mean to question your knowledge on this but perhaps that amount of salt is fine for natives and fish that can handle tidal and brackish water. Maybe a salt water bath for non native tropicals is wiser???
  24. Thanks for the info Stella I'm just doing the sums for the salt 250L tank = 250 tsp salt @ 6.6g per tsp = 1.65kg salt Sounds like a hell of a lot of salt
  25. Here are a few pics of whats going on. I hope they are clear enough
