  1. I run tube from the yeast mix bottle to a smaller 300ml bottle then another tube from that bottle to the powerhead. This acts as a fail safe setup in case the yeast mix over reacts etc so that the yeast mix doesn't get sucked into the tank. I also add 1/4 tsp of baking soda to the mix as i am on rain water and I use the active yeast mixture for bread making
  2. Another quote from the above site
  3. An extract from http://www.aquariumpros.com/articles/bi ... ypes.shtml So how tall is tall enough ?
  4. Most experienced fish keepers would recommend the use of 2 canister filters in a 5 foot tank. Are you saying that the second canister filter is of no real benefit for biological filtration and its sole purpose is for extra mechanical filtration?
  5. I find that the river sand that i use is already well washed by the river. I put it straight into the tank, fill the tank with water, stir the sand up a bit with my fingers and net off anything that floats. I have never had any problems and as Alan said the plants love it
  6. I have a spare aqua one 103F that i thought i could use to supply the bed filter. It will pre filter the water of solids and has an air intake on the outlet that will supply the extra O2 needed.
  7. I have had gravel in storage in a fertiliser sack for months and months. When I re-used it in a tank hundreds of trumpet snails miraculously appeared within hours
  8. Why is Mark doing this then? viewtopic.php?f=28&t=43132 Surely he isn't going to all this effort just for mechanical filtration.
  9. Yeah they normally sell for $60-70 USD Thanks for the info guys Any idea on what size pump I should use to run it?
  10. Well the price was right so I had to give it a try. Who knows, I might learn something
  11. I just bought this brand new on trademe for $14 The blurb on the net says it is suitable for a 1000L tank. I plan to add it to one of my 5 foot african tanks that currently only being filtered by one 1400lph cannister filter. I plan to over stock this tank so will need the extra filtration. I plan to connect this to the outlet of my canister filter or would it be better if I used a seperate pump. The blurb on the net says connection to a canister filter is fine but I was wondering if anyone else has used these filters and if so how did you set them up.
  12. Red emailed me this pic and asked me to post it for him. Nice fish

Ahhh but isn't the joy in getting something to be the best it can be. Strong, healthy, fast growing and pest and disease free? Not to mention sharing the cuttings with friends and fellow forum members?
  14. Do you remember my Dem/E.yellow 5 footer downstairs? That has a CF1200 at each end
  15. I would advise both of you to add a handful of sea salt to your tanks. It wont harm the fish and it will react with any nitrite (if you get a nitrite spike) and neutralize its harmful effects to the fish.
  16. Thanks for the invite Red. I will PM you next time I am over that way
  17. So you decided against the phantom then? I'm looking forward to your pics
  18. The UV bulbs are 9 watts, I get my replacement bulbs from the same seller as in the above link. They are a lot cheaper than most UV bulbs. You don't need to run the UV constantly, I only run mine as needed so it may take 1.5-2 years to get 6 months of UV bulb running time.
  19. I have 3 of these running at the moment. I turn the UV lamp on and off as needed http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 171952.htm
  20. L010a. Red Lizard Catfish/ Red Whiptail Catfish http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... ies_id=747
  21. Awesome mate. Well done. L010a and rineloricaria lanceolata are the most placid fish that i have. I can catch mine in my hands and move them from tank to tank. Mine are now as long as my index finger and the females are getting very fat
