  1. zimbo-brit-Southafrican.... GIMME FOOOOD! hot, cold, old, fresh, dirty, anything. I am a garbage can... :lol:
  2. Empty and scrub with salt? High [NaCl] causes catastrophic loss of osmotic equlibrium in most organisms. I always scrub new tanks with salt when I get them.
  3. I think I love you... :lol: :lol: :lol: hahahah

    Greetings!

    welcome to the forums bru! just keep your fingers out of cages... =P
  5. Personally if I was to go through all the effort to do a big conversion, I would go V8 over rotary any day of the week, couldn't stand the brap brap brap all day long. Also if you have your sources they alot cheaper ie: 1uzfe, front sump and box, $800, supra manual box, $80, fitter turner friend to make adapter plate and do mounts, couple boxes of beer... Now for the courier or navara D/c to put them into.... *drool*
  6. my tutor used to say: 1st time is a learning curve, 2nd time is a mistake, 3rd time is testicular. You weren't to know, boss. exctretum est, but that is life.
  7. If I wasn't hungry before I sure am now!!! I hate you all..... :evil: :lol:
  8. aaaaaaaaannnnnnnddddddd....... The anticipation is killing me!
  9. I'd say try the solar, but have the spa heater in line too. that way, even if you get a little through the solar your not relying on it, and the spa heater might not have to be on constantly either. with a body of water like that though, once it was up to heat, robably wouldn't take much to keep ticking over. Good insulation will be your best friend too.
  10. Size of tank, stocking, media, and everything else will affect it. I'd be tempted to say head towards the faster end of the scale, but not so fast as to cause mass disurbance. the bacteria will scavenge rather quickly, so I dont think that there would be much problem. Look at fluidised bed filters. Fast water rate and high disturbance, and they are effective.
  11. I have been keping fish for many a year now, about 10 years all up, and I have hardly ever had an algae problem until earlier this year. (luck? most likely) This was the algae that would not die. I have a suspision that a phosphorous-laden load on a truck or something must have blown a dust into my tank (i live above a truck yard) and thus started it. It is a heavily planted tank too. There were 2 types, a black, low-lying, everything-covering, smothering one, that stunted my plant growth, and a small green dot one. The latter being of little concern. The former was my nemisis. I battled with it, SAE couldnt move it, pleco couldnt move it. So I resorted to chemical warefare. API "Algaefix" was the weapon of choice. And it was effective. The black sheet of night started to lift, and my SAE went nuts for it now it could get into it. Pretty soon it was gone. YAY! Now the little green one, whilst not as bad has not been defeated so easily. Using phos-zorb i managed to remove much of the phosphorous that was in there. But seeing as how some algae have the ability to scavenge phosphorous from dying algal cells, it did not stop the green algae. Recently I thought to reduce my photoperiod, only by 2 hours. from ~13 to just over 10. The change has been almost instant. With the increased plant growth (they seem un-impeded thusfar by the light change) and the reduced lighting, the green dots are vanishing (particulary on the heavier planted side of the tank, I imagine the plants are absorbing the nutrients before the algae now) So, moral of the story: API "algaefix" is great if you get to your wits end with a horrible outbreak. But photoperiod changes of as little as a couple hours are also super-effective. As I have read and told many people before, but took me doing it myself to realise exactly HOW effective. >.<
  12. idea- feasable reality- not going to be monetarily viable unless the setup works for many years without maintenance. And even then is not fool-proof and will probably have many "niggles" that will annoy the snot out of you.
  13. When your more interested in the fish in the duty-free lounge than anything else... >.
  14. That is quite possibly the saddest thing I have heard this year. I'm so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
  15. Still say that as long as the correction is made with good intention, and not "haha you nonce, its spelt "You're", educate yourself fool!", then there shouldn't be a problem. Sometimes, especially with me personally, if you want help, then speak to me in a semblance of english, I find it quite rude/ impersonal otherwise... Just the way things are I guess. Someone always going to take offence to something.

  17. This! And, every year they survive, the amount of eggs they produce increases substantially!
  18. When looking for a flat the number one priority is how are you going to get your tanks in there... >.
  19. hoe gaan dit? I think that as long as people endevour to try and spell properly there is not a problem. When we pull people up on small mistakes, it not a "point and laugh" moment. For me at least, it is a genuine " hey buddy, just so you know..." The arguement that "there are some international people trying to speak english" is actually a good reason TO pull out errors. How else do people learn best except by "Trial and error" . We have the trial, and as long as the error is shown in a positive light, where is the issue? Only if the person making the error takes it the wrong way. In which case, it is on them, not the person trying to help. Yes? To the other extent, the purposeful molestering and raping of the english language when you have a perfectly good qwerty keyboard, and over 160 characters to make your point, strikes a chord with me. It is hard to read, understand, and often I simply dont bother even looking at it sometimes. Worst of all, since there are international people here, it shows them bad grammar and spelling, a lesson which they then continue, then people complain that they come to our country and can't speak/write properly! >.< anyone see the irony? There are a couple people that continuously make genuine minor "mistakes", but as I was told by my tutor: 1st time you do something wrong, its a lesson, (something that you can only learn through being shown what you've done wrong), 2nd time is a mistake, (a quick reminder of how it's done usually surfices here), 3rd time is a piss take.... Want to see real spelling Nazi's, try some other forums!! People here are still VERY friendly considering.
  20. The male of our species is always in the dogbox. Just a matter of when/whether we are allowed out or not... >.< :lol: 8) I imagine that youd need a consent, or at least a building permit. going to have to re-inforce the floors around it, build the staircase, make it safe, look into all the by-laws etc etc. could become an expensive process. {note: my building experience is being the lackie on-site, so may still be wrong, and others will probably have much better info}
