correct Bulldog That glass is 10mm toughened and costs about $250 per square meter when buying 100's of meters The cost of grinding a tank thats only probably 6mm thick could well cost 2 or $300 and need to be taken apart so that it can take the presure I too remove faint scratches and lay the glass flat on my table. It will often take 2 or 3 hours using jewllers rouge mixed to a paste and using a pure woollen buff ($75) on a slow drill You can buy a new tank for under what the costs will be but with the buss shelters and both the type of glass as well as the size, its only just possibly worth while removing the scratches The other thing to consider is that your grinding the surface of so a 6mm tank may well end up being 4 of 5 mm thick

there goes my dream of owning a classic motorbikeBarrie replied to Carlos & Siran's topic in The Off Topic Fishroom I know your leg pulling but that is one of the problems ACC and all benifits have. People try to get what they can instead of what they need when they need it. ACC is an insurance policey that all people pay to help those that have a bit of bad luck. Its like all benifts (with the exception of the pension), they are supposed to be a had up not a life style. A neibour was a fireman and was badly burnt a few years ago. Other than his burns he has told my wife that he is fine but he lives on ACC at 80% of his income. My wife asked when he was going back to work and his answer was typical of a lot. I wont work again, I tell the doctor that I get headaches so they keep me on ACC and the government pays me. Wrong. The government is not paying him. Your and my levies are paying him. His wife dosnt work! and he wont work again. Thats why the rates are going up. All benifits are designed as a hand up not a life style and people need to be aware that its our taxes that are paying them and helping them out. Pride should make people want to become self reliant rather than rely on other people to supliment their income/lifestyle I and none of my children have ever taken a thing from any form of benifit and hope I never need to. In saying that, Im more than happy for my taxes to help those that need a hand up to get a hand up. I dont want to support them, just to help them out If motor cycles are the cause of big ACC payouts great, they should pay more. Rugby (and other sports) would be harder as the health benifits through fitness may well help offset illhealth later?

scratches on normal non toughened glass will not weaken it (note scratches not cuts) Scratches on TOUGHENED glass can weaken it as to toughen glass the outside surface is shrunk putting the inside under presure and therefore giving the glass tensile strenght. When the outside surface is scratched so that you can feel the mark with your finger nail, you have effectively weakened the outside surface and given the glass under presure a place to release that built up presure The reason that scratch repair will not work is that is dose not repair, it hides

in the glass trade we call them glass fins.

What about leaky homes? in general bad designs and incorrect products They are not covered

Yes it does stand up We (glass companies/glaziers) have to work to a minimum standard. That includes thickness as well as construction. If a glazier incorectly glazes your window (or makes incorectly or with the wrong thickness of glass your fish tank) and it breaks causing death or injury, we can be fined up to $500,000.00 If a tank maker is not folowing the same set of rules, they too can have the same level of penilty bestowed apon them

2nd hand and off cuts I buy over $30,000 worth of glass per month and buying 12mm by stock sheets is still more costly that that. Some large companies use 12 mm for say table tops and the off cuts (wastage) are worked into the cost of the job so instead of expensive dumping, they will sell to tank makers and the like

the tank is faulty due to being made form glass that is not thick enough... its been made incorrectly The other option or out for them is the age. In saying that, I have only found one company (ins) that I have any time for and thats AMI. Unfortunatly they dont do commercial. I have around here some where a memo sent around their staff(State Ins) that says to spend time on new customers as existing customers are going to leave them sooner or later I too can work out a full retail price for you Jim but a price from P44 may look better?

Ryan, thats the whole point EXPERTS in glass and its properties recomend thicker glass but self taught tank makers with not knowledge of glass's properties make unsafe tanks. Yes, they may well be great for year and may never have a problem but every now and then the numbers up and some one can be killed. Jim commented on the force that the glass flew across the room and was enough to break another tank. Just think of the problem if there was a 2 year old grand son standing there. (I mention 2 YO g'son as mine spends a lot of time just looking into the tanks) Lets be quite clear, I am NOT having a go at Jim. Hes probably brought this tank from a tank maker or someone else, and would have little way of knowing. To say I dont care if people buy/obtain tanks is not correct as I have simply seen too many accidents and the damage they have done but people will not listen to advice so there is little I can do. I too use to make large tanks but simply dont want to now days as to make them correctly is far far to expensive. Please, learn from this and buy "over the top" tanks Also realise that silicone is only garenteed for 10 years externally. What that means is that UV light and other factors (including water) will make the seal far less efficiant and it should be replaced. I wait now for all the stories of tanks that are still fine after 25 or 35 years

Jim Hind site is great I know but that tank should have a thickness of 15mm on the sides Lage tanks scare the waste from me I tell you. The force that you have seen and the way the glass shot across the room breaking another tank is my fair. Ive seen too many injureys from things like this. As you said, look on the plus side and no-one was injured. Just hope that people look at what has happened and learn!!!!!!! If I can help at all let me know

Yeah When you think of it, they have only a period of 6 weeks at Christmas and a few other weekends that they can possibly do well. I always support and am happy to pay a little more in order to make sure smaller town bussinesses are still open the following year. Its not all about the cheapest deal.

Sweet we are heading to the Coromandel in Jan. I will add it to my little list of things to do! When? I hope to be here untill mid Jan How old do you think i am? anything older than 19 old fella How busy was it? Was pretty quiet when we were there but like you we ate pretty early Have a look at the time of my post, we were there at 5pm so we could get home in time for the bird program on TV1 At 6.30 when we left there were about 5 other tables filled and most people dine out from 6.30 to 7.30 seating. Dont think a small town like Coromandel that has 5 nice resturants would be flat out on a non special weekend but hopefully they get enough trade to make it all worth while

what caused it to break Jim? what were the dimentions? what thickness of glass? How long ago was it made?

Daughters having a 18th b'day party at home tonight (security on site) and Brenda and I did what all good parent should do when having to put up with 50 seventeen to nineteen year olds, we ran for the hills of Coromandel. Ive worked like a slave yesterday and today so as neither of us wanted to cook, we went out for an early dinner. We had not had a meal at the "bottom pub" before so called in there. Only 4 mains but they sounded great although a little pricey for a pub. Not really a pub, more of a attached resturant. We both decided to forgo an entre but had garlic bread. We both had steak for our mains. Now these steaks were $35 (as mentioned, not really a pub meal) but they were probably 30 to 35mm thick and cooked perfectly. The garlic bread was the best I have ever had and wasnt strong enough to enjoy the next day and the orange and almond pudding I had was also perfect. If your in the Coromandel town and want a meal of absolute delight, I really recomend "lure Resturant"

Mr Wok What happens in the case of N Rachovii? Rachovii is a short lived fish and the eggs are incubated for 6 months. Its highly probable that you will not have the parents when the fry hatch let alone at the 30 day mark. I realise that this is a very unusual case as this particular fish is very short lived and the eggs are longer than normal but nature has made them this way to keep the specie going (these eggs can hatch after being dried for 3 years Im told)

Gesh guys Visit the home page, theres a lot of interesting stuff on it  The rules came into force 1 April 1995 * The breeder must be a financial member of an affiliated club at the time of spawning. * The breeding year will be for fish qualifying from 1 April to 31 March inclusive. * A point will be awarded for breeding 10 fish and keeping them for 30 days. * Hatching date is date fry are first seen free swimming. * Qualifying date is 30 days after hatching. * Spawnings are to be witnessed by another financial FNZAS member. (Rule amended conference 2006). * Spawning must be registered not later than 60 days after hatching date on the FNZAS registration form. * The breeder is to have possession of both parents at the time of spawning. * These rules apply to both the Breeding and Rebreeding Schemes. * A rebreeding is a respawning of a species that the breeder has previously registered. * The FNZAS breeding coordinator is not eligible to enter either the breeding or rebreeding competitions but may register spawnings towards pins. * The FNZAS National executive will rule on any disputes and their decision will be binding.
