  1. you can get insurance for anything.... the cost of it is another story
  2. love fish for sure I quite often fillet fish and pocket them with all sorts of stuff, honey, soy, lime and any herbs I can find... even used cinamin once but wont be trying that again
  3. Can you eat raw fish? Trevs are 2nd only to blue Mao mao for raw fish fillet and then thinly slice so that your going across the grain and the slices are only 3 to 5mm thick Make a dish with kikomin soy sauce and a couple of dollops (small) of Wasabi mixed together and place a few more dollops around the sides of the disk The fish should be well chilled. lightly bath the fish slice (note singular) in the soy mix and place in mouth. If a bit more heat is desired, slide fish slice over the wasabi before eating. Make sure you have a cold beer at the ready. Mussels... live of course. Slide the shell side way so you can slip a BLUNT knife in and cut through one side of the core. Remove the half shell and then cut through the other core (that attaches the mussel to the shell. Remove the beard and place back in the half shell Sprinkle salt (they with move) and a pinch of brown sugar. Place on the grill of your hot smoker and cook for no more than 10 minutes. I promise you that this will be the best way you have ever eaten mussels. Takes a long time to prepare but the wait is worth the effort Boy I cant wait for the 24th and Coromandel
  4. I would have cooked hundreds of crays (literally hundreds) and never heard a noise ever I dont go by time as boiling can depend on the depth of water but with about 25 to 50mm of water, you cook the underside until just turned red then turn over and cook the top side until just red. Remove the hot water and pour cold water over the cray. This cools the shell down and stops over cooking Another way is to cook the underside until red, remove from the heat and empty the hot water out. Place on a plate in the fridge or cooler place until the cray is cool enough to handle. Remove the tail and split length wise (from the under side of the tail)pour over a mix of butter, lemon juice with a little garlic (just enough to coat the flesh) and cook over the grill part of the BBQ with the flesh side upwards. When the flesh starts to reduce (only just starts) turn over and place daiagonally over the grill bars to slightly pattern the flesh then remove and serve using a little more of the seasoned coating while on seafood, scallops are best cooked by chopping bacon into smaller bits with lemon juice and butter. Once the bacon is almost cooked, place the scallops (either crumbed or not) in with the juice mix and cook for only enough time to heat the scallops through.... do not cook through, only enough to heat then up. This way the scallops will still be very tender and the bacon flavor just finishs them off. Those that can eat seafood raw will agree that scallops undercooked are easily better than those that are over cooked and the taste is the same

    Fry

good news I have been just ticking all mine over at the moments and have just this minute came in from removing all mops. I still have peat in with the peat spawners and will probably leave fresh peat in with them when I go away at Christmas for 3 weeks Some really good new is that I have hatched about 20 Rachovii fry out from some overdue peat that I got from EJ Has anyone else got any of these? In not getting any Eggersi hatch from the last 2 lots of peat
  6. no your right I was going by the rear finnage and colouration but in looking at the head in the other photo, I agree You know me though, I see killis everywhere... is there any other fish (other than table fish?)
  7. middle photo could well be some type of Killi
  8. Jim, I studied the solar system for a few years and had/have countless books on the subject, really enjoyed it. I started building a 10inch but never completed it but did buy a 6inch. I used it a few times then gave it to a mate as when I would go to the Hubble site and see those photos, I felt so dissapointed in what I was able to see Yes, you need to experiance the night sky with your own enhanced eyes but my advice is to keep to a lesser budget untill you know in which direction you will head. The 6inch could easily see the rings of Saturn but you always want to see more and Hubble enables that... I wonder what ever happened to all my books
  9. and look at these for more profesional help http://www.aquatic-photography.com/
  10. as mentioned earlier http://killifishaustralia.forumcircle.c ... 74&start=0 have a look at these which were taken with a EF 50mm f/1.8
  11. I have the PC on most mornings early so let me know... or call the cell Westerly winds dont allow me to go out as the ramp faces norwest
  12. the last lot of Guentheri peat from the same parent produced over 200 fry and the Korts about 40 from memory I wonder if they got cold in the post
  13. If your in the Coromandel, I will have a cool beer and boat
  14. Meth Blue should be added before even adding the eggs ALWAYS incubate the eggs in water with meth blue and it should be VERY blue in colour How did you get on with the Korts?
  15. coromandel from dec 23rd to jan 14th the whole family (3 daughters, 2 sons in law and 3 grandkids as well as Brenda and I) will live in the 2 bedroom batch with a couple of tents. there will be the odd fight but a hell of a lot more laughings and fun
  16. whereas I hope things will be fine, keep in mind that a lot of companies have struggled and have been forced to change their structure around to keep existing in the future so it may well not be something they are very keen on doing either. Also take (after rereading it) your work contract as that will have the conditions of employments which includes dismissal and redundancies. The contract I have provides for no payout but an extra weeks (2 in total) in which pay to help look for a position. If I needed to make someone redundant then I would be in trouble and a payout could well be the death nail for my company. Try also to look and see your employers side as it will probably be upsetting for them as well, it means they are failing and loosing work by not being compeditive
  17. screen savers are an interesting topic as are wallpapers dont mean to hijack but another tought for a screen saver is family photos I have a folder that has a couple of hundred photos of the family and have that as my saver. Often my wife (or any of us to be honest) will go in to the PC room and just take a few moments to look at these random photos and remind us of different times of our lives... cost nothing as well Wall papers are my favorite photo at the time
  18. if you were to go away for a weekend/weeks holliday they would be happy enough without food so dont feed the night before either... as mentions food = waste= polution depending on the heat pad you have, it often pays to pack the air space arround the double baged fish with newspaper and tape the heat pad to the newspaper above the fish
  19. in summer with the birds (even though they are cleaned daily) I would need to spray a can a day... mind you I do detest flies
  20. I have 2 in the house and at the worst time, one in the garage/fishroom but keep in mind that all my tanks are covered
  21. surely quality is the main purpose of the annual show? although in thinking further, the number one reason is probably to present as many specie of fish for the public and other keepers to see and spark interest. number 2 would be quality? With my interest, I would love to see even bad/poor examples of some killis that were here ages ago rather than not see them at all. At the last Killi show in Napier, I entered about 3 fish that I thought would have a shot as they were nice in my eyes but I also entered several that I was sure would not take a prise but not too many people would have seen then therefore would provoke interest. I will take the same thoughts into our next show (Napier next April)
  22. A reference must be nothing more than facts By saying that, all a reference needs to say by law is lenght of time worked and time keeping Things like left of his own free will could lead the writer to be sued by a future employer for a false reference. I belive that if you insisted on that cl;ause, they would have to say something along the lines of there were issues around the termanation that were resolved which to me as an employer would have me run a mile. A reference stating the length of service and the time keeping is all I would be asking if I were you Maybe a list of duties?
  23. from the registereing of breedings thing, the reason I took part was simply to make sure that if people were interested in the type of fish I bred, they would have a start point for seeking them out. I have 2 people that I have contacted that have bred a couple of killis that are no longer here... or so I thought. They still had them although one only had peat. I have peat from them now so hopefully these may well become firmly established again in the future. The register is a good thing. Quality being directly related to the parents I would dissagree. Often fry produced from poor parents can be of a higher quality than the parents simply because offeed and conditions. Parents may well have been produced in overcrowded conditions with poor food yet when fry are produced and fed great tucker with plenty of water changes and room, the fry will very often excede the parents in quality
