Shubunkins, Calico fantails & WCMM outside, 3 Fantails inside and my new guppy set up with about 30ish++++. Oh and the apple snails who are now banned to a tank of their own. I'm after some nice looking guppys as i'm weeding out the boring colours. or maybe a couple of sunset platys, or maybe..... I'll stop there. The list goes on.

Hey thanks people for all the replys, youre right in saying it might be nice looking and all, but honestly we cant afford it if we want to move. PLUS hubby wants to go down to palmy this weekend and it could be a chance for me to do a bit of looking at wet pets. (love that place), Any other pet shops down there worth a look?
-
Maybe wrong but red tailed sharks? They look cool
-
HA! isnt that the truth. Ok i was a little off on the guessing, 3ft tank, 450wide X 500high. No brand names tho. inc Lights, pump, and stand.
-
Good point there but i think if we did end up getting this, that would be the last one!! We might just have to invest in those plastic fish that the daughter plays with in the bath so there's no mess, no feeding, easy to catch, no breeding, doesnt matter about the tap water etc etc.
-
I saw the tank about 2 months ago but cant remember a thing about it. (mushy brain syndrome  ) Have asked hubby to find out more details for me, he works with the guy. As we are hoping to move soon, its not the best investment i could make.

I have been offered a huge tank to buy. Its 4ft long, (cant remember the litre volume), maybe a metre higfh, with a black hood, internal lights, 2x filters and matching stand. The owner has got a new - bigger one getting made, so no need for this one. No idea on the brand of filters but they would be the best on the market, it cost them over 2000 to buy seperate. Looked on TM to try to get a comparison, but not much luck. If anyone can give me a rough price that would be great thanks.

I had some g/fish fry with burst bellies dying. All i could put it down to was they ate WAY too much bbs when i gave them a treat once. Did water changes, threw in salt, ended up putting them inside in a tank to keep an eye on them but nothing worked, then they came right. I would easily find 4-6 a day floating.

Hey thanks for that. With the ambulia, and trimming (if i ever get to that stage), do you just nip the top off or actual branches?
-
Yes ive seen a pic of dwarf sag, quite nice. I'll have a look-see for cyperus helferii, Thanks. I also like that ambulia but thought it might grow too tall, maybe if i plant it behind the filter (in the corner) it could occupy that area?

Hi all, looking for some easy to look after plants for the guppy tank. I currently have a small bit of java moss in one corner (weighted down), a plastic plant, some duckweed floating (for the fry to hide amongst) and i pulled some stems off an oxygenating plant out of my pond, washed them, tied them together, and weighted down. They look quite nice for pond plants. But i would like something that looks like grass. ??. something to go in the front/middle of the tank floor for the young guppies to play through. Also it has to be easy to look after and not mind the pet ramshorn cruising over it. Tank is well lit during day and about 24-26deg. Thanks.

Ha Ha, after watching the snails catch some of my goldfish fry and eat them............. not HUGELY attached. I was hoping to plant the tank so might look at moving the snails tho.
-
Should i also add i cat fish of sorts to be the clean up crew??
-
Hi all, been thinking of having a splash of colour in the lounge (apart from the g/fish family) and after much late night searching on the net, i'm 99% positive i would like to have some guppys. TOUGH choice i know!!! the other 1% is killifish. (I like the littlies). A few things i need answering is: i have a spare tank that had goldfish in it but now houses 6 med size apple snails. Do i need to totally clean out the tank top to bottom? or just a real good scrub and quite a few water changes? Or should i just set up a brand spanker? (hubby would love that) Basically i got the apple snails last year without researching them much and now they take pride of place in the nicest tank with ........PLASTIC PLANTS!!! We would love to have something different in there so should i treat it like a brand new set up or are they (guppies) quite hardy to go into an ex- goldie tank? --With a heater of course-- Also is there any plants the apple snails dont like?

*******UPDATE******* Have been contacted by email and told more on the way in container. No Sorry for the last lot or anything. 2 of the snails have not moved since i posted yesterday but the 1 snail with at least 40% of its back exposed has moved and eaten the tiny amount of lettuce i put in yesterday. If it survives I'm not too sure where to put it? The only tank i have thats apple snail proof is with a few small goldies but they might annoy it. I could put it in with the WCMM but its heavily stocked with java moss. hmmmmmmmm will give it another couple of days.

Auction number was 104931812. I paid $5.50 for a "Courier" but they turned up via a postie on a pushy. I understand that things do go wrong, I have sent fish to the south island quite a few times and once they got lost at the depot (not using that courier anymore) and turned up much too late, expired. The person who brought them wanted a full refund even tho the add stated "at buyers risk". I did refund fully but refused to send more to them at my expense. I have the 3 snails in an icecream container. I put flake in last night and thats when i saw some movement, but none this morning.

Hi all. Yes i brought some apple snails off TM. There were supposed to be 10 of them at 2-3cm. When the bag turned up, flat - wet and smelly i was at a loss. They had been put into a plastic bag with some water then knotted at the top. Thats it. Well, all but 3 were in tiny bits. So...... 1 has come out of its shell partly then not moved in 12hrs, 1 has most of its shell broken away but is moving a bit and the other has righted itself but have not seen any more movement and it's shell is white. Do I kindly freeze them? Keep an eye on them and 'hope' they get better? Im not concerned about the money but people shouldnt be sending things if they cant package them properly Im guessing there's no quick fix for broken shells. Your comments and suggestions will be appreciated. Oh, the person i brought them off has not returned any emails so hopefully the next ones they send will be better off.

I used to place cardboard down on the grass with a brick to keep it in place. In a week the grass has died off and the worms are generally near the surface. With regards to the jumping, (im not that keen on exercise) just pat the ground with your hands constantly, ie; bang bang bang bang bang. For a couple of minutes as that simulates the vibration of rain. Good luck.

Boiled egg yolk? (about 3-4min), then when it's cold it crumbles quite good.

Thats exactly what theyre doing... i thought i was going mad but they caught another one this morning. I fed them (crushed flake) as usual and sat there and just watched. One snail just went to the top, stretched out into the middle of the tank and stayed there. I first thought 'ok, youre just eating the flake' then a wee fishy went between the glass and the snail and it just latched on. I managed to get the fish away but it didnt survive. Fish eating apple snail anyone? I was reading up on breeding them (thats why theyre in that tank, to keep an eye on things) but so far they just eat and eat and eat and no x-rated stuff.
-
Its just a bronze goldfish they have. As to how they caught it?? theyre crafty, crawl onto the filter and catch a ride up to the top on the bubbles. They get a good amount of lettuce, duckweed, a few stalks of oxygenating plants each week. Actually if anyone knows... when i got them they all had holes in their shells (lacking calcium?) now only 2 (got 8) have holes but is there anything i can give them/put in the water for this that wont affect the fish?
-
Hmmm, They were all alive and well when i fed them, went out to feed the pony and check on things and turned the light on when i came back (2hrs later) and there they were. Could have possibly 'passed on' while my back was turned.?? Bit gutted really. If only i could catch the neighbours cat, then they could have a huge fry up.
-
No one told me they would eat the fish. I guess i'm not feeding them enough?
-
The only way i can explain it is... you know when some darker fish turn light? and some shubunkins loose their dark patches? Well this guy it looks like he's growing the black patch.
-
Yes, everything normal. They are messy, picking up the stones and biffing them, up-rooting the plants etc. Thanks very much for your help.
