  1. L066 would be my bet. right size, and shape. my L136 are good for markings burt only get 1/2 that size Not the best solution but there are a few threads on PC that touch on the subject. Selective breeding back focussing on L102 traits, they were talking needing 4 generations to achieve this.
  2. Doin fine- girl is outside cave at the mo, so hopefully another spawn might be near
  3. Feed Courgette or something like broccoli stalk an hour after the lights go out at night. Stick a fork through it and chuck in.
  4. Keep hold and ilah, she's got abit of time up her sleeve, hopefully another one that were around 3-4 yrs ago might show up. Rcon - are you there?- pretty sure he had a couple he swapped for some L270's about 3 yrs ago. Hopefully you find one, otherwise the breeding back option might come into play.
  5. Morally or ethically I am ambivalent. But on a style, taste level that is sooooo wrong!! In the old days we had to put filters on lens's to alter colour etc. They also did cheesy rainbow or starburst filters. the shot looks like the before shot in the brochures they put out.
  6. I have an FX5 in a 540 ltr tank with plecs, tetras and Cichlids. They produce lots of waste and I reckon need the filtration. Otherwise I'd go for the two cannister idea, especially with fish that produce less waste. I have two external in another 4ft and alternate cleaning them, and as it a malawi tank, so low on waste output, the water is never a worry. UV filter- as others have said, if the tank is in a light room or prone to algae then perhaps otherwise try without.
  7. Agassizi is cool alright but aggresive compared to others. My cockatoos always seemed quiet compared. All apistos are heartbreakers though if you're not fastidious about tank upkeep, and they require more territory than you think. While tempting I wouldn't put any more than a pair or trio per 2ft of tank bottom space.
  8. The key thing here is that your good work is upheld, and that good breeding colonies are kept going. It is so easy for a species that was common at a time to slide away and get lost. Tanks look great, as they always do, yes your addiction has lead to a commercial grade fishroom. I will look forward to seeing the tropheus - might have to give that Patrick a bit of a kick though for not hiding some out back like I told him too. LOL
  9. Chances are that they are captive bred coming presumably from Asia. Zebs, Royals and pseudancistrus sp. The story goes that some of the Zebs originally here were smuggled into Aus earlier in the decade, because of the demand. As With David R , these guys while unlikely could survive up Northern states.
  10. So Ad Konings confirmed that hybridisation occurs naturally. Obviously it is a lot more prevailent in the confines of Aquaria.

Rearrange tank. I have a more vertical pile of rocks/wood so less floor area. and hiding spaces that are more visible to me, but at the end of the day he/she will want to hunker down out of sight.
  12. It would be OK in gravel fine enough to burrow in. Very shy and great at hiding.

    GBA's hide

The older they get the more inclined they will be to hide away, especially the males. The cave is optimum for breeding purposes, but young one less than 5cm just need something to chill out under like a log and will be fine.
  14. I agree- stick with one of the proven silicone. I would imagine there may be a chance of 'leeching' with th 'No nails"
  15. I'd say they are all quite gregarious in nature when in a group. Reseearch the sizes as some are smaller than others -the dwarf chain smaller still. I 've had 3 Angelicus loaches for two years and still 6-7cm yet I had a golden Zebra that was almost double that inside 1 year.
  16. What is the problem is that everyone wants to give this 'morph' other names. Gold, strawberry, dragons blood, tangerine, and a 'something' prime. All names attributed to them. I would call them a 'morph' more than Hybrid as there would appear to be enough line breeding gone on to ensure the stock now are breeding relatively true. I would happily look at a colourful tank of 'hybridised' fish until someone decided to give one of them a name based on a whim or a wish. Thats why we dislike hybrids.
  17. Hey Charlie Are they all recent imports or are there also some of the juvis that grew up here. Would be great to see your pics. I have 8 that I got as juvis late 2005. I lost my largest female in a scrap about 6 mths ago and replaced her with a Juvi. The largest around 15-16cm, are sexable. The latest larger lot that came in while the same size ( advantage of growing up in the wild)are as you say a lot harder to sex-unless you catch them for a living I guess, as they are a lot younger. Found these images of Puerto Ayacucho where they come from. If you can find the article on breeding at berlin zoo in 10,000ltr tank. It shows a couple shots of aquascape- lots of big boulders also. Keep us updated- cheers!

pay to move it on if just the one.Like any barb wants plenty of mates to settle it down. its behaviour the result of nervousness although even in numbers they are active to say the least.
  19. They are normally readily available. They do prefer to be in a small group and good snail eaters. I'd be ringing the LFS around, some one must have some.
  20. Could you get 4 rawms with a view to cutting back to a pair? Might be a squeeze for 4 of them
  21. I have bn's in all my malawi tanks- no worries. your Kenyi might want to shift them from a hole every now and then but no probs.
  22. Those ingedients are saying Creole to me.
  23. You are also happy to push that fact and label yourself as a commercial breeder- your assigning the term business to your enterprise as key indicator to me, and you are always keen to push the quality of your product. I would have thought as a commercial breeder buying breeding stock off auction or from 'takeaguess" sources imprudent to say the least if quality is still your aim, and as you indicate you are in 'research mode'. All the best in the change of direction. Just a thought. Mods-Please note my intention is 'issue based' only
  24. Phil- mate if your moving into Malawi breeding you need to sort out pseudotropheus vs Aulononcara . A peacock has never been and never will be a mbuna- sigh!
  25. very nice squawker - yeah best to catch them at that size by hand, those odontodes are a mess of trouble in nets. Are you thinking female?
