  1. Looks like a teffe Green or brown of some sort. May even be wildcaught, Not the expert, but a good water regime will get this fish showing fantastic colours.
  2. Plecos are a fish that do come up and bite you that way. There aren't too many plecs that aren't good, main problem with many is size, they get big and poo heaps. Yours will get only to about 12cm and other hypans are about that size. Nice fish, enjoy.

    Dwarf Cichlids

a few rocks and wood that make a little cave tucked back. He'll feel safe as.
  4. the problem is that becomes "Something, something firebird", and people trust too easily what google tells and shows them, and or not don't research their fish much. All of sudden the "something, something" is filled in again with what ever. So these two auctions, one for jacobfriebergi, and other 95% Baenschi, are very probable both Rubenscens, rubins red, ruby red. was firebird merely someone given a new name as there were are few Rubescens available.

  6. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =181360171 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =181604719 So I might think to buy some of both to expand my gene pool-Hmm!
  7. Have you a cave for dominant male? he wiil defend that rather than whole tank. I would think you have enough room provided you have hiding options. Otherwise take out subordinate males. Breeding size about 7cm.
  8. A healthy plec can go along time without food -is too much food an option? They are seceptable to bacterial infections in there stomach, particularly wildcaught fish. Really its the water quality and right now I'd recommend regular and decent water changes, get a air bubbler in and oxygenate water, the plec will appreciate that if it is under stress, even increase temp to 28-29. Overseas they regularly give antibiotics.
  9. Congrats mate that is great!-I reckon these guys are great plec for heaps of reasons, and be good to get some numbers out there so good luck. get some photos up when you can! Hope the sexing is right-let us know. I have two males, and they killed the third male, so agree the females are harder to come by.
  10. Snow flake pleco LDA 33 or L254 are great black white spots. Yes many juvi's are much cuter than adults, and less bolshy. In fact- Anyone know how to make my 7 yr daughter stay the same. She loves Dad and hates boys!!- one day it will go Kaka. Nice shot!
  11. Hmmm!- Canvasing for votes in Tauranga, sounds dangerous- I hope you dont hit up any expat billionaires. Johnny Be good!!! Good Luck to Nick!
  12. l like the blind faith mentality- "the shop said it is so it is, they must be right". One parent could quite well be a peacock. I can almost see the poster of Winston Peters hanging above the tank.
  13. I had mine outside from labour weekend last year through to April no probs.
  14. On the whole I think the built in filters in Aqua one tanks easy and good to use. Buying filter wool in bulk and cheap means I can replace my mechanical filter every week,( even if i'm not water changing). the more you can keep the big crap out of your bio filter the better your filter will work and the better the quality of your water. The reuasble sponge and carbon pads are expensive, so you tend to hang on to them and they dont do 1/2 the job.IMO,
  15. Go with Bristle noses/ GBAs as they won't harrass the Discus like Siamese or Chinese/Golden algae eaters when bigger, the hairier stuff may need more than just that though- can you remove the wodd and dry out or boil, see if you can rid of some.
  16. A sponge filter in a small 10-15ltr tank and a little heater will be fine for fry/female tank. Wait 2 weeks and put your mum in there and she will spit her brood in safety when she's ready, and saves you stripping . Are you doing anything to induce breeding. Decent water change and temp change work for me. And patience, sometimes they just need time to grow up enough to breed successfully
  17. That amount of fish in 90 ltrs is crowdwed but ok if your plan is to upgrade. Filtration and water conditions obviously are more important in short term, the more heavily you stock the tank
  18. I have a few AR series tanks and use ceramic noodle balls as bio, I don't bother with carbon. I get a bag of stiff dacron/filter wool fill from spotlight which is a lot cheaper than the sponges etc from the LFS. I use as the mechanical filter, replacing that at water changes. They are also handy for throwing a bag of shell/coral rock or peat/java moss in the filter if you are looking to buffer water in any way.
  19. keep aerated and if they stay thaetcolour they are they still good, they turn white if infertile or dead. Get a brine shrimp culture going. Chances are the Oscars will try again so have a game plan for that situation.
  20. I agree The breeding back option is a 10 yr minumum project, and A last resource to conserve a species here. because no male becomes available. I hope predictions of readily available Hypans in the future bear fruit, it would suit me fine. Ilah- yeah I'd be looking at L066 mainly because they seem more similar in bodyshape to L102 than others but more research could suggest another. L270, and L333 all here in numbers now and L260 with males.
  21. Sand base for Electric yellow and convict. Rockwork and wood. Wood for Americasns and limestone type of rock for Africans. Find some wood in local stream, rocks from anywhere- pretty cheap. 2-3 silk plants and easy care tank.
  22. some loaches will give you similar animation with out the aggression levels. The red tail will take a while to get to a troublesome size. I have one because my daughter was determined she wanted one, and so it is happy pestering my malawi peacocks,
