  1. Overseas it is not necessarily the tail type which decides which betta fight. It is the aggression, strength of fins and tail rays, and straightness of spine which is looked for in the fighter, however most are standard plakats. Standard plakats are the closest to those which naturally occur in the wild The ones that have been used in NZ for fighting are also chosen this way.
  2. I didnt know about those other two nz ones
  3. Not NZ based fish forums - this is the only one. There is a cost to the person/organisation setting them up and then it relies on volunteers, which are hard to come by these days, to maintain them. This is why the FNZAS hopes that those using the fishroom will join a local club, which is not expensive, and by doing this give back a small amount to support the site which helps them.
  4. Mine goes down the drain as I use a venturi system to water change. A lot faster than letting it run out the hose. Until a few months ago I used to let it water the lawn.
  5. pimafix is more common for goldfish - melafix for tropicals at least neither of these will turn silicon blue!!
  6. Overseas breeders jar their fry from around 9 weeks of age. That is why we often see small bodies and big fins on a lot of imports but that is easily resolved once they are taken home. The only pond grown betta I have ever seen in NZ were great big obese things. Too big to be much use for anything really.
  7. too late, you will have to try again another day

  9. Can you not get hold of frozen bloodworms?
  10. They will absorb the water when you feed them. I dont know that the larvas will eat them though as they bear little resemblance to either the frozen or real thing.
  11. Happy New Year everyone. I was rudely woken just before midnight by what sounded like our house being bombed. It turns out that where we are now living must be in the direct line of the vibrations from fireworks going off on the sky tower which then bounce back at our house from the volcano across the road from us. Being such a beautiful sunny warm day up here hubby and I took our new motorcycle (BMW R1200RT SE) for a ride over to Maraetai where we dipped in the sea before joining extended family for lunch under the pohutukawas at Point Chevalier. We are now home and hubby is loading the bike for his trip to the South Island.
  12. Agree with you totally. I only use photobucket for the fishroom and practically every time I wish to use it they have changed the way it works. However, I shall continue to use it and complain every time simply because it is free.
  13. I am unable to offer any assistance re the plumbing in of the new filter but good luck. However, you will find that putting holes in the tank will void any warranty that you may have on it. It may also cause your insurance company to decide you are not covered should any accidents/floods happen.
  14. that is very definitely hair algae!
  15. Good idea. I think its more likely that it has been allowed to take over the moss rather than removing it as the threads start to show. Reminds me of the cocoons you see in some horror movies!
  16. just take the algae off, I normally twist it around my finger and then pick the remaining strands off. Algae is opportunistic and will attach to anything it can. chucking the moss will not guarantee you are rid of it.
  17. I use T5HO bulbs in my planted tank, these and the light fittings can be purchased from the lfs. These work well but do struggle to penetrate to the 60cm depth of my tank. Java fern, Indian fern do not have high light requirements. Red plants do if you wish them to remain red. CO2 will help boost the growth rate but fertilisers are also necessary.
  18. I have my timers so CO2 comes on one hour before lights turn on and goes off one hour before the lights turn off. That way has always worked for me.
  19. and the timers i got were the ones from bunnings cheap but definately not reliable im thinking of getting digital ones but my mates have used them in the past and also had nothing but trouble with them haha oh bother. One type I have trouble with but I find the ones with the timer off centre to the plug way better. what about trying christmas moss or java moss on your driftwood.
  20. A group of 5 would be good, thats what I have in both my 85 litre and 450 litre tanks. Enough to school together. They are not big loaches at all but they are pretty cool to look at. http://fishkeeper.co.uk/site/databank/d ... ain-loach-
  21. Even with a 50% water change I would have expect some nitrate to show. No problem if not but just keep an eye on it for a while in case it is still cycling. My cabomba has a few yellow stems as well. Never had it happen before. With regards to java fern I have never managed to grow it in a high tech tank but have absolutely no trouble growing it in tanks with really low lighting. I put it down originally to the tank temperature gut think maybe the lights might have something to do with it as well. Where did you get your timers from - I get mine from Bunnings and not only are they cheap, they are 100% reliable.
  22. just speed reread this thread again - what sort of substrate are you using and where did you get it from what sort of rocks and where did you get them from what types of plants are they do you have to turn all your lights on at once or are they able to be turned on separately how long did it take for the algae to build up how often have you water changed this time around and how much how much excel are you using what is your stock this time around what are you feeding how often and how much what are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings what is your kh do you use chlorine remover for water changes did you use a liquid bacteria at start up I know you will have already answered these questions but bear with me if you can
