  1. You cant check it yourself as its a sealed unit.
  2. I find they do not eat Pleco tabs hence the making sure you have plants with algae on them. Maybe someone else has found a commercial food that they do actually eat. Brown algae is easy to culture, stick some plastic plants in water under high light and it will take off.
  3. Nothing wrong with that sort of pH. In a mature tank your pH levels are going to drop any way so unless you have fish with specific requirements ie Africans, discus, most fish will adapt. If you are trying to breed fish you also need their preferred pH. Re shell, if you have to raise it just put a piece of coral rock behind your plants and driftwood so it is out of sight. Much easier to keep a watch on so you know when it has dissolved.
  4. Once they get a regular algal food source they colour up, fatten up and become a lot more lively!
  5. Otos require algae in the tank to survive. They chow through brown algae in particular.
  6. Hi Mel Happy anniversary for today and I hope the doctor sorts it for you. Hmmm. I remember feeling like that several years ago, the dr thought glandular fever, but no, I was pregnant!
  7. Did thy actually see the cherry barbs do it? I had a person tell me that their bristlenose ate their neons and refused to accept it was the electric yellows who were responsible.
  8. I am in Epsom and have never had an issue like this with my fish in the 14 years I have lived here. My latest tanks (see this thread viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61015) are also healthy. The only thing I have noticed with regards to water is the very strong smell of chlorine some days from the taps.
  9. I am so excited - my son and his partner arrive from Methven tomorrow morning to stay with us for a couple of weeks. This means all my children, their partners and my husbands family will be together for Christmas Day! :cr1:
  10. Agreed! Feeding a variety of live food along with dried is very important.
  11. I just love picnics and hardly ever get the chance to go out for breakfast :bounce:
  12. Hash browns and tomatoes as well for me please! Sophia, would you like me to pick you up on the way?

We have a number of shops in the commercial trade and exchange section of the fishroom. Try contacting them.
  14. In fact they much prefer low flow as they struggle to stay upright in a current as it pushes against their long fins and tails. Nearly all the imported fighters (males in particular) will have been raised in small jars.
  15. was anything scratched or scoured? Generally the rattling and noise is the impellor coming loose and flicking around Did you run it and look at it running (it is safe to do it for a short period of time). No stones stuck anywhere?
  16. Have you taken the impeller out and cleaned it and the housing? It's not hard to do and you will be able to check for damage as well.
  17. finally, heres a pic Taken with only the T8 lights on as the room is high light anyway and I find photos taken with the T5HO on makes the plants look bright green. I tried many times to photograph the fish but rainbows never stop for a photo shoot!
  18. Am interested though, is the silver an image and yes before someone asks I know I am :smot:

Okay, Agreed you biff the black stuff which does look to be carbon. One more question, was the layer of what to be filter wool which is sitting under the carbon there when you first got the filter? I use the sintered glass, causes a lesser flow to what you would get using two baskets of the ceramic noodles. Fish guy, The sponge around the outside of the baskets is the stock standard sponge the filter comes with and is not the issue. I believe the problem lies with whatever other wool pads are in the baskets and that they are blocking and slowing the flow.

I have to ask this - how do you know that it worked better for the person you got it off. Did they tell you or did you see it working for yourself. Maybe this is why they sold it. I think you need to check the impellor and the impellor casing. Its not hard to do. A gunky casing will be slowing it down.
  21. :cr1: A reminder to the AFA financial members that the Christmas BBQ :cr7: is on today at my place. Details were emailed to you all so I hope to see you this afternoon :cr4: If you are keen swimmers bring your togs, as there is a 25 metre pool which we can use nearby.
