    Morning

Welcome to the forums. Have a look at our website too as there is good information on it.
  3. Received a message today to say the sump & ATO are ready for collection. Only trouble is that I haven't finished sanding!! I will have to store it in the spare bedroom. The only difference to the above design is that the ATO (right hand end) is now a seperate tank to the sump.
  4. I do like the way you have scaped your tank. It looks great.
  5. Good idea. Don't give up on it. I have found that the pre-Christmas period is not the time to start a fish keeping project.
  6. I think most use the black netting from a garden centre - this sort of thing which you can generally get cut off a roll and is black http://www.bunnings.co.nz/our-range/garden/landscaping/plant-protection/bird-netting rather than buy in little packs. The birds don't see it until they hit it. I think it is just placed over the surface and rocks hold it in place although I guess a determined bird would land on it. Hopefully Caryl will see this thread as I think she had a shag hanging around her place last season.
  7. Can you see mine? Asking because I know I have updated mine
  8. I can't see why you could not use that as long as you cap it off with some other sort of substrate so it doesn't get into the water column.
  9. What is it called and what are the ingredients?
  10. Sad news Tanks with curved glass do appear to have a higher incidence of cracking, but if the surface was even slightly un-level that is more than enough to cause the glass to fracture. I've also been told that once a new tank is placed on position and filled, every time it is moved the chances of it giving are increased.
  11. Late 2008 and I picked up an ex-marine tank (450 litres) and stand from Napier. It came with a sump and pvc piping but not being remotely interested in marines at that time and having no knowledge of sumps, I set it up as a planted discus tank. After twelve months of persistent dripping from the pipes going into the sump, the sump was sold off and a FX5 took its place. Discus, followed by Rainbowfish, then Discus again, followed. Last year hubby and i set up a Red Sea Max C-250. Move on 14 months and the discus/rainbow tank has been emptied and plans are underway for a conversion back to a marine. Many told me this would happen, I should have listened! The stand is currently being stripped of its varnish - a long, slow and noisy job. The sump design is in the planning, and I have a skimmer and return pump on order. I will post in this thread as progress is made
  12. Have they survived or are you waiting for the next lot?

Two posts up from this one
  14. I would like to see the photos Never a better way to learn than to see this sort of thing.
  15. Are you feeding micro pellets or finely crushed food. They have very tiny mouths.
  16. I'm sure I read somewhere in the last week of one other person losing their goldfish when starting off feeding again. Well, that is what they put it down to with the unexplained deaths.
  17. Age and sudden temp changes? Perhaps check the council hasn't sprayed the fencelines.
  18. How long is a piece of string I have added about 4 small pieces, one at a time to my tank which holds around 25kg of rock. Small being less that about 400 grams, the first two times I had ammonia spikes, the last two nothing.
  19. Depends how deep you want to wade I guess and how you feel about being in water that potentially carries a risk of disease.
  20. We have a facebook page and a facebook group and some of our clubs have facebook groups. However most of the club groups are really only buy and sell pages. Ours is not. We've had them for at least four years. The disadvantage with facebook is that once you post, unless it is topical and remains so, then it disappears down the page never to appear again.
  21. If people research before they buy it won't be too confusing and many do The trouble is that the more sections trademe provide, the greater chance the seller will list them in the wrong one
