  1. Converting my freshwater tank to marine so I have the following fish available for collection, all free. 4 x SAE (blackline flying foxes, the real deal), around 4cm each. 4 dwarf chain loaches. Great as a group. 1 male shortfin calico bristlenose 1 female longfin golden albino bristlenose. 8 or so lemon tetras. Pickup only Epsom, Auckland. Not interested in shipping so please do not ask.
  2. Using the MPI website I came across this with an email address if you have questions https://mpi.govt.nz/exporting/animals/live-animals/steps-to-exporting-live-animals/ Knowing nothing about reptiles I am assuming that you would not be asking if this is native to NZ.
  3. Correct Discus - 50 litres per fish and if you havent kept them before I recommend you don't get any smaller than 8cm in size. The smaller they are, the larger and more frequent water changes they require. They are slow moving fish and therefore are not compatible with rainbow fish who zip around the tank. They do like deep tanks with lots of water over their heads so while your tank is deep enough without substrate it may not be with it. My tank is 60cm deep and my adult discus take up between 1/4 - 1/3rd that depth in body size. Discus do not like high lighting and also don't tolerate a lot of flourish excel in the tank.
  4. What fish do you have in your tank? Some algae eaters will nibble the sides of certain fish.

f you add them to the tank keep an eye on their behaviour with the discus. They are nippy and I find my dwarf chains will chase at the discus at time,s and also nibble up the discus sides while chasing them away. It doesn't happen all the time and happens less now the chain loaches are older but it is something to be aware of and keep an eye on. They are also not compatible with cory - just in case you do any some in your tank.
  6. I find none of my fish like the 'fish fuel' (various mixes) which currently leaves me struggling for a frozen mix to feed my marines as the biosupplies products aren't in the shops. I wonder if it is the texture of the fish fuel.
  7. It depends on the type of cichlids you have as to whether or not you can feed them a meat based food.

    a new setp up

Good answer from David. Most African cichlids pH 8.4 9.0 Plants - plastic or anubias, maybe java ferns. Size - depends on the species - google is your friend. Good current, at least 5x the turnover, so tanks with trickle filters won't work - definitely need a cannister filter, or two if you don't have a sump. Make sure you feed high quality and the right type of food for the species you keep. Stock your tank heavily to keep aggression down. Do not allow species to cross breed so either keep an all males tank (which looks amazing) or be prepared to cull fry. Provide plenty of rock caves and barriers to allow fish to hide from the line of sight of others. Be aware that unless you purchased from a reputable seller what you are being told the species is may not be correct. There are an awful lot of hybrids out there being sold as purebreed.
  9. Hollywood fish farm can get them made for you otherwise if you go to the search function at the top right of this page and put in cabinet makers you will be able to scroll through discussions about them - hope this helps

Yes they do eat them but you need more than two as they do better in groups. What other fish do you have in the tank with them as they are very lively and can annoy peaceful inhabitants of the tank
  11. I'll see if I can find out what happened with the ones he got.
  12. There were four males in Aquaworld on Friday. I think they are not wild caught as their bodies were very solid compared to the wild types. Lighting on the tanks is insufficient so all looked dark blue/black. Betta coccina came in several years ago - they were all for one person and he no longer breeds. Not sure if he had any luck or not.
  13. Google suggests that HFF (Hollywood Fish Farm) has them
  14. Calculator is correct. However if your tank water was high in phosphates that would have been feeding the algae. I hope the water stays clear for you then at least you will know your previous experience was not anything you were doing wrong.
  15. Googled Bladder snails, are you sure yours are not Malaysian Trumpet snails? Snails can be the bane of a fishkeepers life but it is pretty much impossible not to get any into your tanks. Hovmollers advice is good. The other thing you could try is a piece of courgette on a string or anchored to the bottom of the tank. When it is covered in snails pull it out.
  16. Its not fighting with another whiptail is it? Let us know how it goes
  17. I know this is not always a possibility but perhaps if you were willing to post you might get some more takers
  18. I agree - they do look nice when they stay low.
  19. Looks bacterial - similar to what bn get on their backs. However try google haemorragic septicaemia and see if anything comes up.
  20. Yes, good luck for the next spawn. Keep us updated.
  21. Excellent Hovmoller. :f77:
