  1. How much water you change sometimes depends on the type of fish you keep and the type of filter you are running.

  3. 3.5 buckets. I change from my kitchen tap via a hose straight into the tank. Mind you it is a 225 litre change each time! I add the conditioner to the tank when I start the fill.
  4. Welcome to the forums - congratulations on 40 years. I will be 29 years in a couple of months. If it was me I would change 3 1/2 buckets of water today, tomorrow and monday and then 3 every couple of days for about 3 weeks, then you can reduce it to about twice a week. You will be amazed how much difference this will make to a gasping fish. When you do the water changes siphon up as much gunk on the bottom as you can as this is what will cause water quality problems. If you add some plants to your tank (like cabomba) which can also float on the surface you will find that when your fish have fry some will be saved as they will have somewhere to hide. Further on down the track (after you have 2 or more tanks  ) you will be able to put your pregnant females in another tank to drop the fry. As for questions - there are no stupid questions, questions are what we are here for so ask away. You will find you will get varying advice, so read all of it, think about it and then do what you feel you should do based on it. Happy fishkeeping!
  5. Fantastic news! Congratulations to you both. Told you it would be quick after a week. Beautiful baby and mum looks very good as well.

  7. I agree and theres the security risk. No one wants break ins and people standing over them.
  8. mines 60cm high and 45 wide, exactly those dimensions.
  9. lol - the bright fish in front is dependent on whether they are fighting or not. Otherwise they hide out. Discus really don't like the T5HO lights so I am now allowing the tiger lotus to put its leaves to the surface to give some shadier areas in the tank.. The tank won't look so tidy but the fish will be happier
  10. mines that size its been through numerous changes in the 2 1/2 years - wood in, wood out, big plants, tall plants, you name it. Final photo is the latest design lol
  11. It looks like the end result of a hard night out on the booze
  12. Your tank sounds interesting. I am wondering if it is set up to run a sump. Would you post a picture of it? If it is plumbed for a sump then you could use that option instead of purchasing cannister filters. I have a tank just slightly smaller that I run a fx5 on. I wouldn't run two on my own tank but have to admit I am looking at a second smaller cannister filter as well. I used to have a sump (came with the tank) and had I understood them better I would now choose one over a cannister.
  13. I doubt it - there are only 5 pieces big enough for me to pick up without a pair of tweezers. Any way I will give it a go.
  14. My homalia arrived today and its so tiny I can do absolutely nothing with it. I have emailed the seller and await the response. Looks not even particularly like the picture.
  15. I saw some very nice black males today - not full black but a good base to work from I reckon.
  16. lol  Sams already done the hairgrass once so its interesting he's trialing it again. The 'just growing hairgrass' was because I wondered what the soil would do to tropicals.
  17. Sorry missed that, and also sorry, I probably can not help as Epsom - Howick - packing fish - Penrose is not possible in the hour and a quarter that there is between the time I finish work and the time the courier company closes especially in peak hour traffic. If you can get them to me at 4.30pm on a Mon, Wed or Thursday then I can assist. PM me for further details if this is possible. You may have to reassess your sale unless the purchaser can arrange for someone down here pack and organise couriers.
  18. I'll repeat my earlier question - where in Auckland are you? The reason for my question - I might be able to help. I have everything here that you will need bar bags that are big enough but the amount of time between the time I finish work and the time a suitable courier closes is very short.
  19. FYI - NZ Couriers no long ship from auckland. Just in case anyone is reading this and decides to use them.
  20. Is it actually pumping or was that just gravity feeding it out at that rate?
  21. So you are not putting fish in it then, just growing hairgrass?
