  1. No, got it from HFF but I thought it would always be low growing lol
  2. My rose sword appears to be in the process of putting up a flower bud It will be the first one. The plant has grown about 40cm since I added the CO2 to the tank
  3. Hollywood Fish Farm, here in Auckland, have marines and also ship. Welcome to the forums. Why don't you introduce yourself and pop your location on your profile.
  4. I would imagine that a commerical cleaner would be the best. Either way the carpets are going to be an insurance job as once wool gets wet it starts the rotting process. Not good news but its a realists view point.
  5. Fish are very sensitive to changes in the air pressure etc so maybe they just know and its keeping them spooked and trying to hide.
  6. this has been a very different spawn than what was expected. From the moment they were born they have been unusual. Who knows what you might get when you cross halfmoons from two different sources together! lol
  7. Updated pics of some of the young. Growing incredibly slowly. First three are dt, the other two are their siblings and should be pure hm. Unusual colour as well - copper!
  8. Been thinking of you Jennifer, especially knowing that your other half is up here atm. Makes it harder when you have to do it all yourself.
  9. Glad to hear most of you are okay but my heart goes out to those not so lucky. My 87 year old father is in ChCh and fortunately answered the phone when I rang this morning (he lives alone). Said he thought the house was going to go but at this stage it appears that the damage is limited to all his pictures and ornaments down, clock off the wall and tv on the floor. He was tidying up when I called. He will phone me again tonight. Its hard when you live so far away.
  10. I would imagine that even if its extra pressure there may well be bits of muck etc in the water for the first few times you turn your taps on.
  11. YAY :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: If its any help I could probably hold or babysit tanks for you - with or without fishes. It would mean me clearing up the shed but its quite big - could probably get at least 6 X 4 - 5 ft tanks in side by side - however I don't know anything about cichlids
  12. Yes you've got that in one. For a while I had a few males including the one in Sams avatar living together with females. Once I suspected they were males the fighting began and they are nasty. No wonder they are used for fighting competitions. The last time I had a pair of males fight the plakat ended up with a chunk of blue tail hanging out of its mouth, which it then proceeded to eat.
  13. If you can grow them I'll buy them!
  14. Females can also flare and be quite nasty to each other. If you had two plakat males in a tank together they would have been tail slapping each other and fighting. Plakats are a lot more nasty than other males. If they were in a tank with a vt male I'm surprised he had any tail left. Anyway I hope you have what you want. Do any of them have an egg spot?
  15. Sounds to me like the effect you get when you poach an egg and bits form on the surface of the water. I agree that living art has the most likely theory as to what it is.
  16. My daughter has hypermobility in most of her joints, and its wrong to watch! She can bend her toes backwards so they touch the upper part of her foot for one.
  17. Finally had time to read the later posts. When I think about it, my fighter fry sometimes do exactly what you have been describing too. Not all of them, normally the ones who pig out on bbs. They become belly sliders and lie down. I cull them.
  18. In a few more weeks the tiger lotus will send up more shoots to the top of the tank than you can cope with. The CO2 + flourish excel will keep the bba under control but the hair algae will run riot with all the lighting required for the CO2 - at least thats whats happening in my tank. The only good thing is that at the rate the plants go I just take a pair of scissors to them and chop the hair algae out twice a week
  19. thanks - yes the next challenge will be raising them. I can only feed 2 - 3 times a day mostly. They are a giant/normal cross.
  20. Yay :bounce: :bounce: I have fry hatching. After killing off about 4 females and then co habitating with another for several weeks they spawned yesterday and today there is some movement. This is the yellow male by the way. The red and blue passed away last week. The only spawn I got from him became his dinner instantly.
  21. I have a sony dsc n2 - 10.1 mega pixels with macro
  22. Josh scary? I don't think so. I can think of other descriptions for him but scary - NO!
  23. I have had no experience with columnaris but I also wondered if that might be it by your description. I gather stress and a change of water conditions can cause it and I might be wrong here, but I think it is something - like white spot - that is always present but needs a trigger. If it is columnaris your other fish in the tank will be at risk. Try putting a post into the diseases section. You will get a bigger response by fish keepers more experienced with diseases. Just do a description of what was wrong with the fish, the sized tanks they were in, the type of filter running and the length of time you had had the fish for. You will field a lot of questions and very likely a good solution to your problem.
  24. First off - welcome to the forums. You can introduce yourself further up the page and if you add your location to your profile it can be invaluable if assistance is needed. I've never had this happen to my fighters and I have had thousands. I'll start with a few questions and after you give me the answers more are sure to follow - How big is the tank? Was the tank newly set up for the first fish? How long had the tank been running before you added the first fighter. Was the second fish put into the same tank as the first? Was the tank thoroughly cleaned out between the two fish? What sort of filter are you running? Did you purchase both fish from the same place? From your post I am not certain but are you saying that the female fighters are in the same tank? My only thoughts at this stage are that while it may have been finrot eventually thats not what caused the body to go white.
  25. I like the look and the plants with cover the spray bar. I've had 50 rummynose and 50 cardinals in my tank together (450 litres) and they looked fantastic.
