  1. Yes, I like your 'take 2' better. The twisted val will look great when it reaches the top and folds inwards in your tank and your taller growing plants are now not in the front of the tank. Your discus will appreciate the val cover as well as they don't like intense like but they do tolerate it and also they need some open space to be able to swim and eat the food off the tank floor.
  2. it looks exactly like the green tiger lotus growing in my tanks. check out this link http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/foru ... php?id=109 this does not look like the tiger lotus in my tanks.
  3. I really like it - to me it's as if you are looking out from a heavily covered area to the lush green beyond.
  4. It sounds like you might have too much ammonia in your tank. How big is your tank and how often do you change the water? Try doing some 30% water changes daily for a week and then cut them back to every couple of days and then you can stretch them out a bit more. Ideally two water changes a week is good.
  5. Thanks for posting Sunrise. A lot of people are interested in going to this sort of thing - me included but its a little too far.
  6. how do they work - seriously considering one for my 450 litre planted tank as the fx5 doesn't move the water at the lower levels sufficiently.
  7. Did it die of the same thing - the huge tummy? If you would like I can come over the bridge and have a look today. I'll pm you some details about me so that your parents minds are put at rest.
  8. Sorry - I sold out because I sold my last spare to Josh. I have a pair in the spawning tank atm however now the weather is more settled they are simply not interested  However I do have 6-7 week old half giants that should throw some plakats among them (dad was a giant plakat).
  9. More than $40 for a shuttle, its about $45 to our place alone. I make a good shuttle service and you are welcome to use me as long as its not the weekend I am in ChCh for the meeting. Parnell is very near us. Taxis I would guess in the region of $60.
  10. New Brighton had some really nice stuff when we were down there in early Feb and then we went to Lake Ellesmere where there is more driftwood than you can possibly ever ever want.
  11. will try to Joe. They aren't so easy to see as they are smaller - I can only find 4 of the 5 I originally had and they are in my 5ft planted tank as well.
  12. I've been looking at those and the Cannon 550.
  13. Hemorrhagic Septicemia? Distinct bright red streaks on fins (caused by vascular inflammation due to systemic/bloodborne bacterial infection) and occasionally patchy red discoloration on the flanks of the body. try googling that and see if it fits. I've taken the description off http://badmanstropicalfish.com/fish_pal ... Septicemia
  14. Based on that there is only one female in there. Jennifers adults were highly coloured so it will be interesting to see. Would be good if there were a lot of stunning males in the tank as the females I have seen around look okay, its just the males that have no colouring.
  15. Ive got some of Ryanjury's wild kribs as well and I am pretty certain they are both sexes
  16. thanks - I'll take a good look in the morning - the lights are off in the shed now. I do know that Jennifers adults were stunners.
  17. whoops - should have said my hubby reckons a NEW volcano is going to pop up down there. I'm a ChCh girl, born and bred there and lived for 24 years in the Hoon Hay, Spreydon, Cashmere and Halswell areas so I am very concerned about the goings on with all the shakes.
  18. Thanks. I think half my problem is that they all have fat bellys due to the amount of food they get. There's one that definitely is a female but I didn't get a pic of her. Well I'm pleased if I have a mix of sexes up here as there are other Auckland fish club members who I am going to share all but one pair with when I can tell the difference.
  19. I've seen them in mixed tanks in the lfs but the common answer from those who know best is that they are better in a species only tank. They are extremely feisty.
  20. I do hope so Sunbird - hopefully someone will come and sex them for me.
  21. My hubby reckons a volcano is going to pop up down there!
