  1. the last 3 pics. If they are 8 months old the males should be fighting and there is a good chance that the dead one was a male, the stirrer who got his just deserts (in other words the one that normally ends up killed is the one who started it) Theres nothing wrong with the other ones either. How big are they?
  2. nice - I can see a couple of pics of fish that I wouldn't mind getting my greedy little mitts on :slfg: How old are they? When they are young what looks like an ovipositor is not always what it seems.
  3. Yes I have considered it but until I get full giant females, bred through generations of crossing back to giants, I will most likely wait. Then again... when there is a tank empty and calling my name I may think again. :sml1:
  4. Yes, they are lovely fish but they are vicious. Lessons I have learnt - plakat males can jump at least 15cm to get in to the next tank to fight with another plakat male (the result so far, 1 very sulky male and he was the guilty party!) plakat males are not as gentle on females as other tail types (the result so far, 1 dead dragon female and one very bruised female)
  5. Here are some pics of fighters I currently have in my tanks. As most of you know, at any one time I have around 200 fighting fish swimming around at my place. I am always interested in what other people have so please post some photos of your fish. crowntail males dragon plakats plakat giant young fighters
  6. hopefully - I do not have the copper male any more. He went to a new home but I do have some more coming along and the odd girl as well. I have a stunning silver plakat male with dark edging around his tail :happy2:
  7. you could look on the fnzas facebook page. there is a link on there as well.
  8. can you get to me - i'll drop you home afterwards
  9. two of my young males as it goes .... one is silver and the other gold (bronze actually). I do hope they hold their colour as they mature.
  10. Rare species of fish are the ones to breed if you want to try to cover your costs and perhaps make a few dollars. However, generally speaking, if you can breed the rare fish so can others. Its a supply and demand thing, the easier they are to breed the less you get. If you breed heaps of the more rare species you will swamp the market and the prices will fall. People you sell them to will breed them to cover their costs. If you can manage to pretty much cover your own costs of food you are doing well, let alone power and water. The other thing to note is that if you are making money selling to the public you need to be careful that you are not getting into the IRD tax categories.
  11. I will be there - I promise I will. Does anyone need a ride. I'm coming from Epsom.
  12. I think it is a case of lack of understanding more than a case of intended cruelty. You have to remember that in many countries overseas fish are kept like this and no one seems to find a fault with it. I think you will find that tm will do nothing as there is actually no category there for cruelty to animal related matters. In my experience, if the category is not listed they generally ignore the complaint as you can imagine how many come through to them each day. You would need to report the seller to the SPCA to gain a response. All I hope is that someone who knows, purchases and then either has the space to house the fish in more tanks or can look after them until they on sell them or give them away. At least you have tried to make the seller aware of the issue of overstocking and hopefully they will look at the link you have given. IMO Well done for trying anyway but its probably not worth more of you being blacklisted although potentially all that means is that you can not trade with the seller who blacklisted you.
  13. obviously financial members living in Auckland got theirs first :happy2:
  14. meeee tooooo :happy1: :happy2: Thanks Caryl
  15. There are two sides to this and personally I don't see the pet shop can ever win. If they use the scientific name for something imported under a common name, they are sometimes slammed as people say that it is the wrong fish and the wrong price. So they use the common name and people complain that the scientific name should be used. As a fish committee member I can tell you that the ''common'' names used overseas for certain fish are very very different to the ''common'' name we know them by here. Best idea, research your fish before you buy it. With some fish species even if you research it you will find that there are multiple common names for it.
  16. the only one I am absolutely certain on is that no. 2 is a female and she looks like she could be nice!
  17. I may be completely wrong here but my understanding was that all arowana that come in to the country are sterile.
  18. Kristin, Rangitoto etc had extra school time today as they didn't let them out until after 3.30pm from what I've been told.
  19. Ah yes but it did get the boat yard! Pretty freaky. I managed to get hold of my daughter who has just got her restricted licence and tell her to get off the motorway in time as she was heading over the bridge to visit her boyfriend on the north shore. For once she actually listened to me. Fortunately there was one exit left before she was committed to the bridge and the traffic jam.
  20. I can't tell which is the male but I suspect its possibly photo no. 4. If you look at their undersides you should see a white spot between the ventral fins (the two fins that point downwards under their bodies beneath their gills). The white spot is the ovipositor (egg tube) and normally is only seen on females. However the odd male has a small white spot as well. Looking at them, none of them are big enough or conditioned enough to attempt to breed from yet. How old are they? However when you do have an attempt at breeding choose the best looking female to put with the male. The females body needs to be slightly smaller than the males, about 75% of the size, especially for the first spawning attempt. For the ich, if you have not done so already put the tank temp up to 28 degrees and add 1 gram of rock salt per litre of tank water to help get rid of it quicker. What other meds are you using?
  21. HFF has drontal as they do not supply prazi.
  22. Sounds like a good day, I am sorry I couldn't come on down for it.
