  1. The temp is not too high for neons but will be too low for the discus. I wonder what the shop tested the water for and I wonder what the difference is between the shop and the tanks readings. Certainly sounds like some sort of poisoning or lack of oxygen in the water. My fish normally only come up like that when the tank temp is really high or if there is an ammonia spike. Are they still down the bottom or have they come back up? If you do have an airline then adding it is the best thing you can do.
  2. well I do hope you are not looking as worried as your avatar is. He is very cute though and is growing fast.
  3. I would add an airline if you have a pump, in the meantime the spray bar above the surface of the water will increase the amount of oxygen in the tank. The disturbance on the top of the water will encourage the fish to drop lower into the tank anyway. Two questions - are you using tap or well water and what is the tank temperature as the higher the temp, the less oxygen. Discus like higher temps than neons, in my experience can cope with. The other thing that may be causing issues is a large difference in pH levels between the shop and your tank.
  4. The only thing I would be concerned about having 3 discus is that they are better kept in larger groups to avoid agression. If you get 3 males or 3 females you would be okay but I would be concerned if there was 1 female and 2 males as the males will fight. While I currently only have 3 in my tank they are all males and there is now a lot less fighting than when I had a female in there as well. Mind you different fish have different personalities but those have been my observations. You have to remember that they are cichlids.
  5. 50 litres per discus. The trick with a planted discus tank is to use plants that don't require high light as the discus really don't like a lot of light or do as I do and provide cover at one end of the tank. Regular water changes are a must with discus and if your tank is planted you would be better off starting with good sized fish.
  6. you mean the one of you asleep? :rotf:
  7. How mean of you Here I was at home sick and I walked the whole 100 metres to the letterbox to find it empty. Hmmmmmmmm,,,,, what can I do for payback  Perhaps it will have to involve a chocolate cake or a pie filled with cream :rotf:
  8. I had hundreds in my 5ft, so many that you could see the substrate continually moving but after I added my clown loaches they are no more.
  9. aye!!!! NOT FAIR oh wait - perhaps I had better go and check the letter box
  10. Nice pics. I like looking at dragons but I don't think they are my thing. Will stick with my fish.
  11. Priming the filter is simple - Just push the primer button a couple of times and the filter will prime itself! (except UVC model) may take several pushes of the primer if there are air locks inside
  12. Very sorry to hear. I have lost a large number of fish lately, a lot of them relatively new purchases but also a number of home bred. I have put a lot of it down to the fact that I have been very unwell and have been unable to give them the care and attention they are used to but I don't think that the above is the only reason, however I am sorry that I can't give you any idea as to what is causing it.
  13. Is your tank planted? If not I wouldn't worry about putting a timer on, no lights will mean less algae build up.
