  1. Tranny fish I have half a dozen at the moment. One is obvious the alpha male and the rest a easy to tell the sexes. The females will be darker on the black areas. When I remove the dominant male, the next dominant colours up more.
  2. I have planted one of the Cordata from Kristof in my emersed setup. Hopefully I will get it growing and be able to compare it to the one I have here. Here is mine
  3. Very nice. I like the pics of the Inanga. I have some but they are awful to try and get decent pics of. Just wont stay still for me in my tank.
  4. Mine dont have any yellow, but you can tell the females as the first rays of the dorsel fin are black. Do you have any pic? How do they behave around the male?

    Lemon Tetras

They must have gone up in price a fair bit then. Im sure my last lot a few years ago were only a fraction dearer than neons ie $4 each. I suppose it varies from shop to shop.

    Lemon Tetras

As we dont have a real fish shop here in Wanganui, Can someone in the know please advise me of the current retail price of Lemon Tetras. I am not wanting any arguments about who is cheaper etc, I am trying to work out a tank and I am not sure if they will fit my budget. TIA
  8. Which is probably why they were introduced. Only fish that survived the trip. LOL They probably tried to bring alsorts of stuff from Europe only to loose it on the way.
  9. But there is that alternative, you choose to be quicker and more convenient then you pay for it. If it was free for every small ailment that people had then the doctors would never get through any patients as Joe Bloggs will go to the doctor for just a sore throat cos it free. Can you imagine the line for the Doctor if they were to be 100% free? NZ is hardly third world!
  10. yeah thats the stuff. Have you aske HFF David? Im sure thats what they have their corals on in the SW tanks? I may be wrong but Im sure its the stuff. Maybe give them a bell and ask. Actually I am right, They even sell it, Now come here David and buy me a beer, LOL http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 085686.htm
  11. I think I read the same article, Was it in a TFH mag David? Waynes New World ? Ill go flick through my mags now, If I can find it Ill scan it for ya.
  12. For everyone complaining about the GST increases take a step back and look at our country. We have a free Health system. Almost free education system, If you loose your job you can get a benefit. Be realistic and stop complaining. I am happy, I worked out the other night that I would have to pay nearly $800 every three months if it was not for things like governmnt medication subsidies. With the subsidy I only pay $15.00. Everyone complains about the taxes, but happily put their hand out for Government assistance. The country is not an unlimited source of mony As already mentioned, You dont like the GST increase of a whole 2.5%, then dont buy that Big Mac and save yourself two weeks worth of GST. (based on a low to middle income spend per week)
  13. Ignore P44, Geos are well worth it. They are neat fish that look stunning and have interesting behaviors.
  14. Thats why I love crypts. So much variation that is not directly obvious.
  15. That tank is looking good Dennis. As Hovmoller mentioned earlier, you will find the altifrons like to dig around the wood and stones. It is surprising the amount of sand they can move in one day. I gave up scaping their tank and left them to it.Now I have sand at the front of the tank and none at the back.
  16. Interesting. I inherited a large Cordata from Vinson that is large and looks slightly different to mine which I have flowered and ID'd as C.cordata"blassi". This one came from down CHCH way. I may have to bring it inside and try to get it to flower and see what we have. It may be a different form. There are a few differnt ones out there, but dont know about here in NZ. Has Bob had this flower? Here is a pic from a guy in Aussie C.cordata "Rosenervis" http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab358/Brian-Seccombe/CryptcordataRosenervis-3.jpg
  17. Cant have your cake and eat it too.
  18. Depends on what natives you want to catch. By far the easiest is at night with a spotlight. Bullies are easily caught during the day by placing a net downstream from a rock and lifting the rock. Usually you will get a net full of detritus and occasionally a bully or two. This is also a good way to catch Koura. At night bullies can be caught by quietly sneaking up and gently placing a net next to fish and using a small stick you chase the fish into the net. They are really easy to catch when blinded by the spotlight. Kokopu are a bit more difficult. Im sure Stella will pipe up with her methods soon, LOL
  19. To clarify the question, You are asking if balansae is the only available crypt to grow to the surface? Is this correct? If yes, then NO. There is also C. retrospiralis. It is much slower growing than Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae. It is also harder to find. There was some recently advertised on trade me but that was Balansae. There are a few forms of balansae available internationally, but only a few are available in NZ, Jens red variety is an example. Nav, Blassi is a form of C. cordata, which is a reasonably low growing plant. Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia is definately a crypt. It comes from Sumatra. Slow to establish but does grow quite thickly once its happy. Most crypts will grow lower with the more light they have. Balansae does best in hard water with a higher ph than most other crypts prefer. It is also better in situations with higher water movements. HTH Any more questions then fire away
