  1. Deepsound, that tank is absolutely stunning. I love it. You dont happen to have any progress photos of the build?
  2. UUUGGGGGGHHHHHH! I lov creepy crawlies, but slugs give me the willies. Snails sweet as, But slugs, NO WAY.
  3. Looking sweet BD. Could I suggest a trio of B. cupidos. They are a small eartheater that grows about 3 inches in size. They are neat fish and when they are settled they colour up nicely. They are not big enough to uproot all the plants but enough to keep the sand clean.
  4. I wouldnt bother. Also I have had a run in with that trader and they can get quite nasty and abusive when things dont go thier way. Why would you want it?
  5. Also, remember in the wild there is often geographical isolation in some environments. This means some fish have no choice. Take killis for example. How many seasons have the same genes been passed through due to the fact that they are living in pools that dry up during summer. As Ryan stated, we dont really have too much choice in NZ with Apistos. Most that come in come on the same shipment from the same hatchery and likely the same parents. I say with Apistos just make do with what you have and breed them. If opportunity arrives to add new genes then by all mans take it, but sometimes beggers cant be choosers.
  6. Lots of fish eat it, but not in quantities to rid your tank of it though. Bst to net as much as you can and increase surface agitation.
  7. Hi people Tomorrow is our September meeting 1PM @ Highbury Whanau Cente PLEASE REMEMBER ITS DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TONIGHT Put you clocks forward and don t be late.
  8. Thats what I was going to suggest. Be a bit cold still thou. Not as cold as the brain freeze you guys would have got from those bowls of icecream
  9. Clean your room LOL Thats a big bit of Hygro. What you done with it?
  10. Sam's Big OE is it? Are you going to stay with Zev? LOL
  11. I fully agree there Rob. I have built a relationship with the small local petshop here and the owner now gives me a copy of the wholesale list to browse. She realises that I am also in retail and I understand the need for the shop to make a living and therefore am not going to expect to pay next to nothing. Unless I am buying something in great volumes, I do not expect a discount from their already reasonable prices. I find this very handy as I can look for what I want when I want. They happily order stuff in directly for me and will call me when they arrive.
  12. Quite possibly, but I would be guessing and saying that it is probably a flying insect as alot of these plants grow with the base of the plant submerged. Maybe they are just opportunistic and just hope something climbs on in.
  13. Im not sure exactly Zev, but I imagine it to be a small fly, ie sandfly sized. What ever it is it is attracted by pheromones as well as colour. Lutea in particular has a distinct smell. Cordata"blassi" has the aroma of rotting carrion. (quite putrid really)
  14. Blassi is one of the easiest to ID in my opinion. It has distinct characteristics. Grey-tan upper leaf, red-maroon under leaf. Wide shovel shaped leaves that are leathery in appearance Email me some pics if you want Jen and Ill have a look.
  15. 18.5 C is very warm for Koura. Im not sure if this is cause of death , but may be a contributing factor.
  16. Cryptocoryne becketti Inside the kettle This picture of beckettii demonstartes the parts of the kettle. Right side being the bottom. The stamens consist of two pollensacks, each with a small, dark tube out. When the stamens ripens, the end of the tubes dissolves, letting out a drop with pollen. Pollen droplet can be seen in above photo Comparing C.walkeri"lutea"with C.wendttii
  17. Today I cut open three different flowers and took some macro pictures of the insides of the kettle. Cryptocoryne walkeri"lutea" Cryptocoryne wendtii.var
  18. I know of exactly the same thing. A family member is a teacher aid but does more than most teachers do for half the pay.

What do you think its worth? There is no real Private price for Hastifolia as it is not a common plant. If you can get it you will have to pay what is being asked as it may be a long time until you get the opportunity to get it again. HTH
  20. The lower part(on Left) is the female part, Pistel The upper part(on right) is the male part, Stamen The fleshy part above the Stamen is the valve. The purpose of this is to trap insects inside for several hours
  21. I no longer measure the humidity but it is quite humid. There is constant water movement and the water is heated to approx 25 C The tank is covered so the humidity stays high. I dont spray them at all. Sometimes when some water drips from top of tank it causes the plants to start to melt. They are now conditioned to handle the conditions I provide. I currently have 5 different plants in flower with the becketti with two at the same time.
  22. Here is a couple more pictures of my crypt flowers I was a day late due to a couple of long late nights at work. The spathe is starting to melt. Dissected kettle of C. beckettii
  23. Most likely it was grown emersed before you bought it. The smaller growth is typical of submersed growth.
