  1. maybe his protest in the tree was for equality of names with his peers
  2. :dunno: wasn't pandora a greek female? i guess it is the same as my mates female dog being called Neville Bartos. it is great he is back.
  3. the worst place for MDF swelling is the edges, i would try a local cabinet/kitchen maker for an offcut of melteca. the face has paper & plastic pressed onto which will be better than a sealer on the face, then you only have to worry about the edges. add more bracing, spending a little more now may save you from spending alot in the future.
  4. i don't know anything about the chirpers but a mate breeds those.
  5. i was refering to his generalisation of "Tropical Fish". The info he provided may be correct for the angels he has but wrong for others as you have rightly pointed out the differences between the tropicals from different regions. the relevance would be the fact that tangs are a tropical species to.
  6. don't get too caught up on the ultimate parameters for your fish. yes, if you can get it to teh perfect situation do so but sometimes you simply cannot get it there or maintain it. it is far better for the fish that the conditions are close to what they require but they are constant. swings in temp or ph can be really hard on any fish, africans i have found to be much more likely to be able to deal with altering conditions than alot of other fish. I keep mine in around 7.5ph & they do very well, just because it says on a profile what their ph needs to be doesn't mean they cannot do well in slightly differing conditions.
  7. interesting. my cold water tangs do very well & breed heaps, perhaps it's the unsatisfactory conditions i keep them in.
  8. i believe the word harvest is in reference to a crop isn't it? a crop being purposely cultivated?
  9. nice work, that will be a great looking setup with a tidy up.
  10. don't worry about it, they will be fine. the larger the tanks the less the temp will drop. i doubt it will drop much, certainly no where near as much as doing a 25% water change with the hose. the only concern i would have is oxygenation, lightly stocked tanks will be fine.

    Hi I'm new here

hi & welcome. P44, has rusty just finished a line?
  12. that is the best smell in the world 8)
  13. i don't doubt Greg will make a safe tank, it's just how he creates that tank effects the functionality with the components that will be used.
  14. as yes, nothing like a skidfest with quality cars.
  15. easily, the same way you would clad a timber framed stand just a thinner material to fix through. a timber one is possible but it would need so much framing & bracing it may reduce the use of storage inside. what is your budget? i would guess i'd spend the following setting it up: tank $600, 2 FX5 $1000 or sump & pump $300, steel stand $350, lights $500, panels & hood $300 & this is with building/fitting them myself. so between $1500 & $2500 would be a realistic amount i think with all the other bits & pieces you will need & depending on what you buy new or used. IMO for a tank of this size a large budget is need. the tank will best be filtered by a sump & placed on a steel stand. What fish are you intending to keep? depending on what you want a narrow & shorter tank may be a better idea. I recently set up a 2000x450x450 which provides great length but it is only around 400L so two cf1200's are more than enough for filtration & a timber stand is perfect for supporting it. it will also be alot cheaper to get running but is still almost 7 foot long.
  16. 1- it will be fine. it will be around 1100L if you fill it to the brim. 2- a good design for the stand 3- steel stands are best for this sort of tank IMO, it will weight at least 1500kg when full.
  17. you will have an issue with piping a canister with the way greg likes to make tanks, make sure you sort out how the bracing he puts in suits how your plumbing needs to work.
  18. i'm sure one of my tanks had that at some point but i have never medicated or had any trouble with fish health. if you can't suck it out, suck out the substrate it is on & leave it to dry in a bucket or something to kill it. i recommend not using meds if there is no great need for them. i have not found it difficult to maintain water quality with tangs at all. If you set up your tank properly in the outset you won't have any trouble. filtration should be around 6 times the tank volume per hour, temp anywhere from 25 to 28 & plenty of aeration. My ph is around 7.4 & mine do very well with plenty of breeding & good colours & health. Tangs aren't hard to keep as long as you set up well & feed good food.
  19. that's what i use & it's great. that price is awesome, i think the stuff i got through my LFS was four times that price.
  20. i would like to commend jim & KP for coming out & saying they have them, good on you guys for forking out the coin to get them & openly enjoying them. nice pics KP, well done.
  21. indeed & i am unsure how it affects how much snot is left or not  "punch the snot out" i understand
  22. i questioned that as I have heard that saying a few times in a derogatory way about johannes, mike & ryan & i simply don't understand the thoughts behind it. :dunno: if you edit a post before someone replies it doesn't tell anybody
  23. how else do they become more common? should we not breed anything? what does breed the snot out of them supposed to mean? i keep tropheus in a tank, they breed & i sell the fry. it's not like they get a lecture every morning about pairing off or i somehow force them to breed. They simply get good conditions & food & the rest takes care of itself. If they don't breed they don't, if they do they do. other than keeping them i have no control over them spawning. it seems you resent that for some reason, would you like to explain that so i can understand your perspective?
  24. perhaps that is exactely what you should do, listen! if he is near i am sure you will "hear" about it?
