your tank obviously has a filter & lights. The next must have would be a heater. I have a similar size tank & have two 150w heaters instead of one larger one. Putting one at either end will heat more evenly IMO. you can put stones or gravel in the bottom as substrate & what ever else you want to aquascape your tank with. you may want to add wood to soften the water but that depends on what type of fish you are going to keep. after that i would get a thermometer & PH kit to monitor water conditions. when you add fish you will need food that suits them. then water conditioner for water changes that you should do weekly with about 25% changed. for that you will need a syphon.

from what i heard youll need another 8 footer for a grow out tank

& making educated changes, calculated risks or experimenting a litle to grow new knowledge.

i dont suck the water through ever, i also don't empty the pipes though & do fill the canister with water before i turn it on. make sure you havn't done what i did, disassembled the spraybar & used the spraybar endcap as a jointer & the pipe jointer as an endcap when i reassembled it. :oops:

i havn't had discus but i have read several times that their growth can be stunted when they are young if they are in small heavily stocked tanks. other than that i dont think it will be too bad, you have plenty of filtration & it will certainly be a busy tank to watch.

i made a pipe cleaner. get a botle brush, cut off most of the wire shaft. tie heavy fishing line to the end. trim brissles of bottle brush so doesnt get stuck. tie a large swivel on the other end of fishing line. feed the swivels through the pipe & pull botle brush through.

any reason why he could not put them in one of those fry holding containers that hang in the main tanks? That would be my way of keeping em in the right water conditions without mixing with the big boys.

yeah thats it, if you dont eat you dont poo, & if you dont poo you die....... Hmm, maybe not the effect we are lookig for due to the $ we have spent to try to keep em alive I was really paranoid about the faeces on the gravel when I first started to keep fish. i almost turned myself inside out with stress worrying about it. I posted about it here, everyone said that it is not a problem at all. since then (8 months give or take) i have not vacumed the gravel, bout the only poo cleaning done is when i fill the tank with the hose the filter sucks up abit of the stirred up stuff.

i snorkeled over a ray at mimiwhangata bay in northland. it got more of a fright than i did & it took off clouding the water with the sand that it had buried itself under. the ensuing girl like squeal that came out of my snorkel was good entertainment for the others of my camping group that were standing on the rocks near by. Crikey! that was a close one but wasn't she a real little beauty!

when i went from a 60L to a 200L is put the 60L water into 200L tank, rant the small shark internal filter in large tank while new filter was running & added fish the very next day. did not have any losses at all. that to me was the same as a water change.

i fill my canister after washing with tap water then fill through the small hole in the top after i clip the top on. I dont get air locks.
